Demand response is a basic tool used to develop modern power systems and electricity markets. Residential and commercial segments account for 40%–50% of the overall electricity demand. These segments need to overcome major obstacles before they can be included in a demand response portfolio. The objective of this paper is to tackle some of the technical barriers and explain how the potential of enabling technology(smart meters) can be harnessed, to evaluate the potential of customers for demand response(end-uses and their behaviors) and,moreover, to validate customers’ effective response to market prices or system events by means of non-intrusive methods. A tool based on the Hilbert transform is improved herein to identify and characterize the most suitable loads for the aforesaid purpose, whereby important characteristics such as cycling frequency, power level and pulse width are identified. The proposed methodology allows the filtering of aggregated load according to the amplitudes of elemental loads, independently of the frequency of their behaviors that could be altered by internal or external inputs such as weather or demand response. In this way, the assessment and verification of customer response can be improved by solving the problem of load aggregation with the help of integral transforms.

Objective: To investigate 33 organic extracts of mangrove plants for: antiparasitic, anticancer, and antibacterial activities, as well as their ability to inhibit the activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme. Methods: Leaves from all different plant mangrove species located in five mangrove zones of the pacific coast of panama were collected according to standard procedures. Qualitative phytochemical analysis of the organic extracts was performed by thin layer chromatography. The antiparasitic activity against plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania donovani, toxicity against Artemia salina, anticancer activity in MCF-7 cell line, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and pseudomonas aeruginosa of all organic extract were investigated according protocols stablished in our institution. Finally, the ability to inhibit the enzymatic activity of α-glucosidase was evaluated by monitoring the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl α-Dglucopyranoside. Results: Thirty-three different samples belonging to nine different species of vascular plants with seeds of true mangroves were collected. Triterpenoids, phenolics, and tannins were the main groups of compounds found in the sampled mangroves. Saponins, quinones, and coumarins were found in less than 50%of the samples. Laguncularia racemosa showed moderate activity against plasmodium falciparum. None of the extracts presented anticancer activity. Rhizophora mangle exhibited potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis [(90.41 ±7.33)% and(96.02±6.14)% of inhibition]; Avicennia germinans and Conocarpus erectus had activity against Escherichia coli[(71.17±6.15)% and(60.60±5. 13)% of inhibition,respectively]. Multilayers incorporated with stimuli-responsive substances by means of layer-by-layer(LbL) self-assembly are much attractive due to their advantages of stimuli-responsiveness and potential applications in different fields. In this study, pyrenemethyl acrylate(pA) was synthesized, and was copolymerized with acrylic acid(AA) to obtain the amphiphilic and photodegradable p(pA-co-AA)polymers with a pA:AA molar ratio of 1.3:3, and an average molecular weight of 6.9 kDa and polydispersity index of 1.04. They formed micelles spontaneously when dispersed in aqueous solution with a size of 27.5 nm in a dry state and 136.6 nm in a wet state. The micelles were readily decomposed to form aggregates as a result of the cleavage of the pyrenemethyl ester bonds under UV-irradiation. UV-responsive micelles-containing multilayers were prepared by LbL self-assembly of the UV-responsive micelles and polyallylamine hydrochloride(pAH). UV-irradiation of the multilayers resulted in the decomposition of micelles, leading to larger surface roughness, and enhanced swelling ratio and wettability of the multilayers. In vitro culture of A549, HepG2 and endothelial cells showed significantly better adhesion at 4 h on the UV-illuminated multilayers, whereas the cell proliferation was not affected significantly until 5 d.

Traditional mining activities are usually correlated with high levels of soil pollution, which is a major environmental concern. Extensive mining activities have taken place in the San Joaquin region in the State of Querétaro, México resulting in high levels of mercury soil pollution (up to 1532 ± 300 mg/kg). We isolated mercury-resistant fungal strains from the San Joaquin region soils and identified them through morphologic characteristics and ITS rDNA region sequence analysis. We determined that fungi isolated belong to the genus Trichoderma. All the isolates selected showed the ability to catalyze the volatilization of Hg. For air sampling, an active sampling device was constructed and using acid KMnO4 as an absorbent, the concentration of mercury in solution was determined through the cold vapor atomic absorption method. The results show mercury volatilization from the fungal species assay, with a maximum of 213.04 ± 32.6 μg/m3 while mycelium accumulation ranged from less than 17.5 ± 2.9 to 20.0 ± 3.4 μg/g. The fungal isolates were also evaluated for their ability to reduce mercury uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. These observations suggest the utility of Trichoderma for the mobilization of mercury in those contaminated soils.

AIM:To evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori(*** ) babA2 ,babB and a recombinant gene between babA2 and babB(babA2/B ),and their role in the development of atrophic gastritis in Costa Rican and Japanese clinical ***:A total of 95 continuous ***-positive Costa Rican(41 males and 54 females;mean age,50.65 years;SD,± 13.04 years) and 95 continuous ***-positive Japanese(50 males and 45 females;mean age,63.43;SD,± 13.21 years) patients underwent upper endoscopy from October 2005 to July *** were enrolled for the polymerase chain reaction(pCR)-based genotyping of the *** babA2 ,babB and babA2/B *** analysis was performed using the χ2 test and the Fisher's exact probability test and multivariate analysis was performed by logistic regression adjusting for gender and age.p pCR-based genotyping of 95 Costa Rican and 95 Japanese isolates showed a higher prevalence of babA2 in Japan(96.8%) than in Costa Rica(73.7%),while that of babA2/B was higher in Costa Rica(11.6%) than in Japan(1.1%).In Costa Rican isolates only,babA2 was significantly associated with atrophic gastritis(p = 0.01).CONCLUSION:These results suggest that the status of babA2 and babA2/B shows geographic differences,and that babA2 has clinical relevance in Costa Rica.

AIM: To investigate in a prospective study whether a simplifi ed clinical score prior to endoscopy in upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) patients was able to predict endoscopic findings at urgent endoscopy. METHODS: All consecutive UGIB patients referred to a single endoscopic center during a 16 mo period were enrolled. Before endoscopy patients were strati- fied according to a simple clinical score (T-score), including T1 (high-risk), T2 (intermediate-risk) and T3 (low-risk). Endoscopy was performed in all cases within 2 h, and high-risk stigmata were considered for further analysis. RESULTS: Out of the 436 patients included into the study, 126 (29%) resulted to be T1, 135 (31%) T2, and 175 (40%) T3. Overall, stigmata of recent haem-orrhage (SRH) were detected in 118 cases (27%). SRH occurred more frequently in T1 patients than in T2/T3 cases (85% vs 3.2%; χ2 = 304.5309, p p presence of comor-bidities (χ2 = 14.7458; p patients. CONCLUSION: Our simplifi ed clinical score appeared to be associated with the detection of endoscopic findings which may deserve urgent endoscopy. A further,randomised study is needed to assess its accuracy in safely scheduling endoscopy in UGIB patients.
