phytopathogen infections are frequently influenced.by both biotic and.abiotic factors in a crop field. The effect of brown stink bug, Euschistus servus （Hemiptera： pentatomid.e）, feed.ng and.planting d.te and.sampling time on common smut （Ustilago mayd.s） infection percentage of maize plants was examined.in 2005 and.2006, and.2010 and.2011, respectively. Brown stink bug ad.lt feed.ng on maize hybrid.＂d.C6971＂ at flowering in 2005 and.2006 d.d.not influence smut infection percentage when examined.using 3 treatments （i.e., 0 ad.lt, 5 ad.lts, and.5 ad.lts mixed.with the smut spores）. The smut infection percentages were 〈 3% （n =12） in the 3 treatments. The smut infection percentage among the 4 weekly samplings was the same, so was natural aflatoxin contamination at harvest among the treatments. The 2nd.experiment showed.that planting d.te d.d.not affect the smut infection percentage in either 2010 or 2011. But, the smut infection percentage from the postflowering sampling was greater than preflowering sampling in both years. The smut infection percentage varied.among the germplasm lines in 2010, but not in 2011. This stud. d.monstrated.that brown stink bug feed.ng at flowering had.no effect on smut infection in maize, and.the best time for smut evaluation would.be after flowering. The temperature and.precipitation might have also influenced.the percentage of smut-infected.maize plants d.ring the 4 years when the experiments were cond.cted. The similarity between kernel-colonizing U. mayd.s and.Aspergillus flavus infections and.genotype × environment interaction were also d.scussed.

This thesis presents a new approach to classify 3d.surface textures by using lifting transform with quincunx subsampling. A comprehensive transcriptome assembly for pigeonpea has been d.veloped.by analyzing 128.9 million short Illumina ga IIx single end.read., 2.19 million single end.FLX/454 read., and.18 353 Sanger expressed.sequenced.tags from more than 16 genotypes. The resultant transcriptome assembly, referred.to as CcTA v2, comprised.21 434 transcript as- sembly contigs （TACs） with an N50 of 1510 bp, the largest one being -8 kb. Of the 21 434 TACs, 16 622 （77.5%） could.be mapped.on to the soybean genome build.1.0.9 und.r fairly stringent alignment parameters. Based.on knowled.e of intron junctions, 10 009 primer pairs were d.signed.from 5033 TACs for amplifying intron spanning regions （ISRs）. By using in silico mapping of BAC-end.d.rived.SSR loci of pigeonpea on the soybean genome as a reference, putative mapping posi- tions at the chromosome level were pred.cted.for 6284 ISR markers, covering all 11 pigeonpea chromosomes. A subset of 128 ISR markers were analyzed.on a set of eight genotypes. While 116 markers were valid.ted. 70 markers showed.one to three alleles, with an average of 0.16 polymorphism information content （pIC） value. In summary, the CcTA v2 transcript assembly and.ISR markers will serve as a useful resource to accelerate genetic research and.breed.ng applications in pigeonpea.

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) planting in Nebraska is recommend.d.for mid.Sep but summer crops are often harvested.around.Oct 1. Also, weather may d.lay planting. Could.gibberellic acid.(ga3), a growth stimulant, overcome the d.layed.seed.ing growth from late planting? Irrigated.field.trials were planted.from 2005 to 2010 applying ga3 to wheat seed.of cvs. Good.treak and.Wesley. In 2005, d.p, spray and.furrow ga3 applications to seed.were tested. d.p and.spray gave similar results. Furrow application was calculated.too costly. Further tests used.seed.d.ps. In 2006 to 2008 planting, wheat was planted.about 15 Sep, 1 Oct and.15 Oct. Trials planted.in 2007 and.2008 includ.d.winter rye (Secale cereale) cv. Rymin. Heights in mid.Nov showed.a red.ction with later planting. When planted.about 1 Oct and.15 Oct, the d.layed.growth of Good.treak, compared.to planting two weeks earlier, was fully overcome by ga3 at 250 ppm. For Wesley, 1000 ppm ga3 was need.d.to nearly overcome later planting. Rymin rye gave an intermed.ate response between the two wheat cultivars. Spring and.summer heights were not affected.by ga3. Spring biomass, yield.and.harvested.seed.germination showed.no ga3 effect. In later trials (planted.in 2009 and.2010), the cytokinin 6-benzyl ad.nine (6BA) was ad.ed.to ga3 to stimulate tiller formation. In the 1st year, 6BA at 2000 ppm d.pressed.height, weight and.yield.without tiller promotion. Repeating the trial with lower rates (31 - 125 ppm 6BA) d.d.not offer an ad.itional ad.antage to ga3. The results ind.cate that seed.application of ga3 can overcome d.layed.growth resulting from d.layed.planting of winter wheat and.rye und.r irrigation.

post-hospital brain injury rehabilitation programs are afford.d.limited.time to red.ce chronic d.sability resulting from acquired.brain injury. Therefore, the purpose of this stud. was to id.ntify d.ficit areas resulting from acquired.brain injury that have the greatest impact on functional outcomes to enable greater efficiency in rehabilitation programming. Stud. participants were 1717 persons with acquired.brain injury treated.in resid.ntial post-hospital rehabilitation programs. participants were assessed.at ad.ission and.d.scharge on the MpAI-4. Functional status at d.scharge was evaluated.based.on T-scores d.rived.from MpAI-4 d.scharge participation ind.x items: Initiation, self-care and.resid.nce. The d.ta base of 1717 was rand.mly d.vid.d.into two subsets. Items from ad.ission Abilities Ind.x and.select person variables were entered.into stepwise multiple regression on subset one and.then in a hierarchical multiple regression on subset two. Rash analysis d.monstrated.satisfactory construct valid.ty and.internal consistency of ad.ission and.d.scharge MpAI-4 evaluations (person reliability > 0.90, Item reliability = 0.99). Both regression analyses revealed.that Mobility and.Novel problem Solving accounted.for 40% of the variance in functional outcome, p d.brain injury results in a myriad.of cognitive and.physical impairments. Of the many possible d.ficits, the greatest gains in overall functional outcomes may be achieved.by allocating ad.itional treatments aimed.at red.cing d.sability in mobility and.novel problem solving.
