A large number of unconventional investigations have been implemented, tested, and validated in the field of microgeophysics, with the aim being to solve specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civil engineering and cultural heritage studies. The investigations were carried out using different tomographic 2D and 3D approaches as well as different energy sources, namely sonic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic （radar） waves, electric potential fields, and infrared thermography. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to greatly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of information. The main new methodologies here discussed are the sonic imprint, the global tomographic traveltime, the electrical resistivity tomography, and the control of external films （patinas） grown on stone monuments. The results seem to be very promising and suggest that it is the moment to dedicate time and effort to this new branch of geophysics, so that these methodologies can be used even more to diagnose, monitor, and safeguard not only engineering buildings and large structures but also ancient monuments and cultural artifacts, like pottery, statues, etc..

Background: Combination therapy with antiseptics such as benzoyl peroxide (Bp) and topical retinoids is widely used as first-line treatment for acne vulgaris (AV). However, these combinations could have a suboptimal skin tolerability. Recently, a new formulation of hydrogen peroxide (Hp) 1%in stabilized cream (Crystacide.; Mipharm,Milan, Italy) became available. A previous clinical study has shown that Hp cream monotherapy presents a better skin tolerability in comparison with Bp in patients with mild AV. Objectives: To evaluate the tolerability and the efficacy of combination therapy with Hp cream and adapalene 0.1%gel in comparison with the combination of Bp 4%cream and adapalene 0.1%gel in the treatment of mild to moderate AV. Methods: In a randomized, investigator-blinded trial, 52 patients (mean ±SD age 25 ±6 years; 19 men and 33 women) with AV were randomly assigned to Hp cream and adapalene gel (group Hp +A) or to Bp cream and adapalene gel (group Bp +A), for eight consecutive weeks. Efficacy was assessed by total (TL), inflammatory (IL) and noninflammatory (NL) lesion counts performed at baseline and weeks 4 and 8. Tolerability was assessed by evaluating skin erythema, burning and dryness at weeks 4 and 8. Results: All patients completed the study. At baseline, the mean ±SD numbers of TL, IL and NL were 44 ±9, 25 ±7 and 19 ±6 in group Hp +A and 40 ±9, 21 ±7 and 19 ±9 in group Bp +A, respectively. At the end of the treatment period, TL, IL and NL were reduced by 93%, 92%and 95%, respectively, in groupHp +A and by 88%, 86%and 90%, respectively, in group Bp +A. A significantly (p = 0.0025) greater reduction in NL was observed in group Hp +A in comparison with group Bp +A. Tolerability was significantly better in group Hp +A in comparison with group Bp+A (p = 0.02). Skin dryness and burning sensation were more frequent in group Bp +A. Immune response to hepatitis B virus vaccine in celiac subjects at diagnosis

AIM To evaluate hepatitis B virus(HBV) vaccine response and correlation with human leukocyte antigens(HLA) and/or gluten intake in celiac patients at *** Fifty-one patients affected by celiac disease, diagnosed at the Department of pediatrics of the University of Catania(Italy), were recruited. All patients were tested at admission for immunization against HBV, according to findings from analysis of quantitative HBV surface antibody(anti-HBs). The anti-HBs titer was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Following the international standards, subjects with antibody titer ponders. The prevalence of responders and non-responders among celiac subjects and the distribution of immunization for age were examined. In addition, the prevalence of responders and non-responders was assessed for correlation to HLA and clinical features at diagnosis of celiac *** The entire study population was divided into three groups according to age: 24 patients aged between 0to 5.5 years(48.9%, group A); 16 aged between 5.5 and 9.5 years(30.61%, group B); 9 aged between 9.5 and 17 years(18.75%, group C). Comparison of the percentage of responders and non-responders between the youngest and the oldest age group showed no significant difference between the two groups(p > 0.05). With regard to the HLA haplotype, comparison of the distribution of vaccination response showed no statistically significant difference between the different genotypes(homozygosity for the HLADQ2 haplotype compared with HLADQ2/DQ8 heterozygosity or other haplotypes; p > 0.05). Moreover, distribution of the responders according to clinical features of celiac disease showed no statistically significant differences(p > 0.05).CONCLUSION This prospective study confirmed the lower percentage of response to HBV vaccine in celiac subjects. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear and further studies are needed.
