Canada’s boreal forest represents an important contributor of the world’s wood supply industry. However,maintaining or increasing productivity of the boreal forest may be challenging in areas dominated by forested peatlands. Moreover, sustainable management of these forests must also consider other important aspects of the forest ecosystem such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration. To address these concerns, ecosystem-based management has been implemented in some Canadian jurisdictions, such as in regions where a large portion of the boreal forest is dominated by forested peatlands. The objectives of this paper are(1) to summarize our current understanding of how natural disturbances influence stand dynamics and biodiversity in forested peatlands, and(2) to review the main differences between natural and managed forest stands with respect to soil properties, stand productivity, understory plant communities. We also discuss how even-age management regime succeeds or fails to preserve old forests and how this loss affects both forest structure and habitat diversity at the landscape *** conclude by showing how, in boreal forested peatlands, forest management could contribute to carbon sequestration and mitigate projected climate change.

A passive rainwater harvesting technique was used to design a sustainable landscape for a residential lot located in the desert. The design was adapted to the Desert Southwest region of the United States based on thirty years of daily historical climate data including precipitation and reference evapotranspiration (ET0). Four cities including El Paso, TX, Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ, and Pahrump, NV, were selected to represent the area. The residential lot was broken up into micro-watersheds reflecting the runoff of water from each separate portion of the house roof, driveway, and lawn area. The paper explains in detail the design steps for one of the micro-watersheds where water retention and infiltration structures were distributed throughout the soil area to capture stormwater runoff close to its source. A passive rainwater capture landscape was obtained by using the stormwater captured in the infiltration structures and stored in the surrounding soil. Native vegetation (shrubs and trees) will use this water exclusively for growth. These plants will not require watering once their root establishment period has passed, except in extreme droughts. Meanwhile, stormwater discharge from the lot will decrease and the groundwater recharge will increase. Results indicate that the current urban water budget can be made sustainable by replacing watering of landscape by municipal water with harvested stormwater. This results in a relatively lush and shady environment even in desert climates. The success is an artifact of the tendency of urban watersheds to increase the volume of stormwater relative to pre-development conditions.

Colorecal cancer(CRC)is one of the main causes of cancer-related mortality in the deweloped world despite recent developments in detection and treatment Several epidemiologial studis indicate that metformin,a widdy prescribed antidiabetic drug,exerts a protective effect on different cancers incuding ***,a recent double blind placebo controlled,randomized trial showed that metformin significantly decreased colorectal adenoma *** exploring the medhanism of action of metformin in cells derived from different types of ancers reported many efects including rapiratory chain complex 1 inhibition,Akt phosphorylation inhibition,ATP depltion,PKA activation and Wnt signaling ***,many of these results were obtained employing metformin at concentrations several fold higher than those achieved in target tissuas in diabetic patients receiving therapeutic recommended doses of *** contrast,recent studies obtained with metformin at concentrations compatible with those detected in human intestins revealed that metformin dicit responses that targetβ-catenin,PI3KAkt,E-adherin,pl20-catenin and focal adhesion kinase which are key molecules and signaling pathways associated to colorectal cancar *** brief review revisit several know aspects as well as nowd ones on the effects of metformin on cancer cells.

Monitoring the concentration of antibiotics in body fluids is essential to optimizing the therapy and minimizing the risk of bacteria resistance,which can be made with electrochemical sensors tailored with appropriate *** this paper,we report on sensors made with screen-printed electrodes(SPE)coated with fullerene(C60),reduced graphene oxide(rGO)and Nafion(NF)(C60-rGO-NF/SPE)to determine the antibiotic metronidazole(MTZ).Under optimized conditions,the C60-rGO-NF/SPE sensor exhibited a linear response in square wave voltammetry for MTZ concentrations from 2.5×10^(-7) to 34×10^(-6) mol/L,with a detection limit of 2.1×10^(-7) mol/*** sensor was also capable of detecting MTZ in serum and urine,with recovery between 94%and 100%,which are similar to those of the standard chromatographic method(HPLC-UV).Because the C60-rGO-NF/SPE sensor is amenable to mass production and allows for MTZ determination with simple principles of detection,it fulfills the requirements of therapeutic drug monitoring programs.

利用短链葡聚糖(short glucan chains,SGC)的螺旋空间结构来包埋姜黄素(curcumin,CUR)。通过使用高剪切分散乳化机高速剪切溶液5 min,用纳米均质机在50 MPa压力下高压均质经剪切后的乳液2次制备成纳米乳液以提高其包埋率和载药量。XRD (x-ray diffraction)和TGA (thermogravimetric analysis)很好的验证了包合物的形成,通过TGA、SEM (scanning electron microscopy)、激光粒径分析仪等各种表征分析得出短链葡聚糖-姜黄素纳米乳液制备成功,所制得的乳液对姜黄素的包埋率和载药量都高于短链葡聚糖-姜黄素包合物,分别达到了71.11%和12.07%,说明制备成纳米乳液对姜黄素的包埋率和载药量都有了明显的提高。所制备的纳米乳液的粒径小于300 nm,粒径分布均一,Zeta电位观测表明所制得的乳液的稳定性有所提高。为提高食品及医药领域姜黄素的生物利用率提供了一定的参考意义。

Exergames can be considered a dual task because the games are performed by a man-videogame interface, requiring cognitive and motor functions simultaneously. Although the literature has shown improvements of cognitive and physical functions due to exergames, the intrinsic mechanisms involved in these functional changes have still not been elucidated. The aims of the present study were（1） to demonstrate the known biological mechanisms of physical exercise regarding muscle adaptation and establish a relationship with exergames; and（2） to present a neurobiological hypothesis about the neuroplastic effects of exergames on the cognitive function of institutionalized older persons. These hypotheses are discussed.

In search of an experimental route to produce linear arrays of spins without the use of nanotechnological tools, we have doped Nb28O70 with small amounts of transition metal oxides (TM;in this case Fe2O3) or rare-earth oxides3, and investigated the location of the alien metal (Fe in this case) in the structure. Previous AC magnetic susceptibility measurements at low temperatures have been consistent with the formation of arrays of TM magnetic moments along the widely spaced columns parallel to the crystallographic b-axis in the Nb28O70 structure. To obtain further details about the TM distribution, the previous investigation has been extended now to include a room-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopic analysis of the Fe-doped material. The data are consistent with the presence of low-spin Fe3+ ions in both octahedral and tetrahedral coordinations of oxygens, and confirm (as suggested in the previous work) that Fe also interchanges positions with Nb ions located at tetrahedrally coordinated sites in the columns of the structure.
