Serum cytokine levels and T lymphocyte subsets in pregnant women with eclampsia

Background: Eclampsia, defined as the occurrence during pregnancy of hypertension, oedema, proteinuria and/or other neurologic abnormalities, causes substantial morbidity and mortality for both mother and foetus. However, its aetiology is largely unknown. Genetic and immune factors may play a role including a reduced maternal response to paternal antigen and an altered adaptation of the maternal immune system to the foetus. Methods: Participants consisted of pregnant women with and without a diagnosis of eclampsia (N = 20, each group), and normal healthy nonpregnant controls (N = 18). Women with smear positive malaria or clinical infections were excluded. Serum levels of TNFα and IL-10 were assayed by ELISA. T lymphocyte subsets of pregnant patients with and without eclampsia were also studied by direct immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies and compared with the control group of 18 normal healthy nonpregnant women (NHC). Results: Eclampsia was associated with significantly lower mean serum IL-10 levels compared to normal pregnant and nonpregnant controls. Levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFα were higher in pregnant women with and without eclampsia, compared to control nonpregnant women. Further differences on serum cytokine levels were observed in the significantly increasing ratio of IL-10 to TNFα from nonpregnant controls to normal pregnant women and to pregnant women with eclampsia. The mean values of CD3+ and CD4+ positive lymphocytes was significantly decreased in patients with eclampsia (p ompared to pregnant controls. Similarly, CD3+ and CD4+ T cells were further decreased in eclampsia and pregnant controls compared to nonpregnant controls (p o was observed from non-pregnant to pregnant controls and to patients with eclampsia buttressing an increase in CD8+ cells in eclampsia and pregnancy compared to controls. Influence of Phase Constitution on Mechanical Performance of 12Ce-3Y-Zro_2/2.5 wt pct Al_(2)o_(3) Composites

The phase constitution of a composite consisting of 12 at. pct Ceo_2-3 at. pct Y_2o_3-Zro_2/2.5 wt pct Al_2o_3 (3Y12Ce2.5Al)was determined by thermodynamic calculation. It is a combination of 36.9 at. pct cubic phase and 63.1 at. pct tetragonalphase at 1450℃. Green compacts were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing with powder synthesized by coating technique,and pressureless sintered at 1450℃. The fracture toughness and Vickers hardness, evaluated by the micro-indentation method,are 2.02 MPa·m^(1/2) and 11.395 GPa, respectively. The addition of 3 at. pct Y_2o_3 to 12 at. pct Ceo_2-Zro_2 ceramic leads todrastically decrease in toughness compared to composites without yttria stabilizer. No monoclinic phase is detected on thesudece of all the ground samples. The high content of cubic phase and lack of phase transformation can be attributed to thelow toughness based on the thermodynamic prediction.

ong>Introduction:ong> Pain control during Manual Vacuum Aspiration is one of the most important aspects of postabortion care. This study assessed the analgesic efficacy, requirement for additional analgesia, and overall satisfaction using Paracervical blocks of 1% lignocaine compare with normal saline as placebo among women undergoing manual vacuum aspiration for incomplete abortion in OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. Methods: This was a double blind randomized controlled trial that occurred between January 2019 and February 2020. We randomized one hundred and twenty eligible women equally into 2 groups. Group A received paracervical block using 1% lignocaine while those in group B received paracervical block using normal saline as placebo. We obtained ethical clearance from the Ethics and Research Committee of the hospital. Preoperatively, we obtained relevant data and evaluated the degree of anxiety and pain on a visual analog scale (VAS). Intraoperative pain was evaluated from 2 viewpoints: that of the external observer on a 0 - 4 scale and that of the patient scale of 0 - 10 in the immediate postoperative period, followed by overall satisfaction at the point of discharge. Prevalence, Clinical Features and outcome of Neonatal Malaria in Two Major Hospitals in Jos, North-Central Nigeria

Malaria was thought to be rare in neonates. However, recent studies report increasing prevalence in neonates. Clinical features of neonatal malaria have also not been adequately reported. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence, clinical features and outcome of malaria in neonates admitted into two tertiary hospitals in Jos, Plateau State. All consecutive neonates aged 0 - 28 days admitted into the neonatal units of Jos University Teaching Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos were recruited into the study. Giemsa stained blood films of the neonates were examined by trained microscopists. Neonates with malaria had presenting clinical features recorded and treated with amodiaquine (1st line) and quinine (2nd line). Clinical features and parasitaemia were monitored for 14 days for outcome. of the 301 neonates enrolled, 16 had malaria parasitaemia giving a prevalence of 5.3%. Congenital malaria accounted for 87.5% of cases of neonatal malaria. Plasmodium falciparum mono-infection was responsible for all the cases of malaria. ITN use in pregnancy offered some protection against neonatal malaria (CI=0.2 - 0.7). The median parasite density was 255 (72, 385) parasites/μl. Fever was significantly present in 10 (66.7%) of the cases (p=0.03). Fifteen of the 16 neonates had clinical and parasitological cure on treatment with amodiaquine. one treatment failure had cure after retreatment with quinine. There was no mortality in all 16 neonates treated for malaria. Malaria is not rare in neonates on admission in Jos. Fever is the commonest clinical feature of neonatal malaria. Amodiaquine provided effective treatment of malaria in neonates in Jos.

The Zro2-Ceo2-AI2o3 system has been assessed with the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) technique using the PARRoT procedure. The experimental information on the Zro2-AI2o3, AI2o3-Ceo2 systems as well as the isothermal sections of the ternary system at 1673 K and 1873 K is well reproduced. According to the assessed isothermal section at 1723 K, no alumina dissolves into the tetragonal zirconia phase. Specimens with different alumina content are fabricated from commercial 12 mol pct Ceo2-stabilized Zro2 powder (12Ce-Zro2). The thermodynamic properties are consistent with the observed microstructure, which present a combination of tetragonal phase and alumina grains.

The applications of commercial computer program set 'SPLEN-o' based on finite elements method (FEM) for the simulation of superplastic forming (SPF) technology of shells are described. The changes in characteristics of ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure during deformation are taken into account in function of viscosity and solving algorithm. Some examples are shown to illustrate the possibilities of FEM simulation for prediction of numerical grain-size data on different SPF stages of shells.

Prediction of selected biodiesel fuel properties using artificial neural network

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel to replace fossil- based diesel fuel. It has fuel properties similar to diesel which are generally determined experimentally. The experimental determination of various properties of biodiesel is costly, time consuming and a tedious process. To solve these problems, artificial neural network （ANN） has been considered as a vital tool for estimating the fuel properties of biodiesel, especially from its fatty acid （FA） composition. In this study, four ANNs have been designed and trained to predict the cetane number （CN）, flash point （FP）, kinematic viscosity （KV） and density of biodiesel using ANN with logsig and purelin transfer functions in the hidden layer of all the networks. The five most prevalent FAs from 55 feedstocks found in the literature utilized as the input parameters for the model are palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenie acids except for density network with a sixth parameter （temperature）. other FAs that are present in the biodiesels have been considered based on the number of carbon atom chains and the level of saturation. From this study, the prediction accuracy and the average absolute deviation of the networks are CN （96.69%; 1.637%）, KV （95.80%; 1.638%）, FP （99.07%; 0.997%） and density （99.40%; 0.101%）. These values are reasonably better compared to previous studies on empirical correlations and ANN predictions of these fuel properties found in literature. Hence, the present study demonstrates the ability of ANN model to predict fuel properties of biodiesel with high accuracy.

Instrumental Characterization of Pretoria Clay Soil by XRF, XRD and SEM

The products of refractory materials are used for lining furnace, incinerators and kilns among other uses and they have the potential of withstanding high temperature without deformation. The objective of the research was to charac-terize the clay soil sample collected from Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria. The sample, collected from a location Latitude 25.0969°S and Longi-tude 28.1624°E, was oven-dried, pulverized and sieved in the laboratory. Min-eralogical and elemental compositions of the sample were determined by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analytical methods. The XRF analysis revealed Fe2o3, Al2o3 and Sio2 as the major constituents, while the other elements occur in minor quantities. Mineralogically, the three samples contain Montmorillonite, Kaolinite and Bentonite, while Samples A contained Quartz in addition to ear-lier mentioned minerals, samples B and C contained Albite.
