It is crucial to adapt the processing of forest bio-resources into biochemicals and bio-based ad-vanced materials in order to transform the current economic climate into a greener *** oil,as a by-product of the Kraft process of wood pulp manufacture,is a promising resource for the extraction of various value-added *** oil fatty acids-based multifunctional Michael acceptor acrylates were *** suitability of developed acrylates for polymerization with tall oil fatty acids-based Michael donor acetoacetates to form a highly cross-linked polymer ma-terial via the Michael addition was *** this novel strategy,valuable chemicals and innovative polymer materials can be produced from tall oil in an entirely new way,making a significant contribution to the development of a forest-based *** different tall oil-based acrylates were successfully synthesized and *** acrylates were successfully used in the synthesis of bio-based thermoset *** polymers had a wide variety of mechanical and thermal properties(glass transition temperature from-12.1 to 29.6°C by dynamic mechanical analysis,Young’s modulus from 15 to 1760 MPa,and stress at break from 0.9 to 16.1 MPa).Gel permeation chromatography,Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy,matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry,and nuclear magnetic resonance were used to analyse the chemical structure of synthesized *** addition,various titration methods and rheology tests were applied to characterize *** chemical composition and thermal and mechanical properties of the developed polymers were studied by using FT-IR,solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance,thermal gravimetric analy-sis,differential scanning calorimetry,dynamic mechanical analysis,and universal strength testing apparatus.

Inflammation/bioenergetics-associated neurodegenerative pathologies and concomitant diseases:a role of mitochondria targeted catalase and xanthophylls

On the winter enhancement of adaptive humoral immunity: hypothesis testing in desert hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii: Cricetidae, Rodentia) kept under long-day and short-day photoperiod

We tested the winter immunity enhancement hypothesis(WIEH)on male desert hamsters(Phodopus roborovskii)kept under long-day(LD)and short-day(SD)*** assumed that under SD in a laboratory,the adaptive humoral immune responsiveness to the antigenic challenge would be enhanced due to the lack of winter physical stressors and food shortages and/or because of the action of an endogenous winter bolstering mechanism,while under LD the immune responsiveness would be suppressed by the activity of the reproductive *** results support the WIEH in *** did not find a difference in antibody production in response to sheep erythrocytes between SD and LD hamsters,but SD males had the lower number of granulocytes and the higher number of lymphocytes in white blood cell *** activity was lower in SD *** males demonstrated an increase in their mass-specific resting metabolic rate,their mass-specific maximal metabolic rate and their level of *** result of a generalized linear model analysis indicates the negative effect on secondary immunoresponsiveness to sheep erythrocytes of mid-ventral gland size,the organ characterizing individual reproductive quality,and designates a tradeoff between antibody production and reproductive *** mass-independent maximal metabolic rate also negatively affected antibody production,indicating a tradeoff between maximal aerobic performance and the adaptive immune *** higher stress in SD males seems to be the most likely reason for the lack of the effect of daylight duration on antibody production.

Space systems have become a key enabler for a wide variety of applications that are vital to the functioning of advanced societies. The trend is one of quantitative and qualitative increase of this dependence, so much so that space systems have been described as a new example of critical infrastructure. This article argues that the existence of critical space infrastructures implies the emergence of a new category of disasters related to disruption risks. We inventory those risks and make policy recommendations for what is, ultimately, a resilience governance issue.

The RdDM Pathway Is Required for Basal Heat Tolerance in Arabidopsis

Heat stress affects epigenetic gene silencing in Arabidopsis. To test for a mechanistic involvement of epige-netic regulation in heat-stress responses, we analyzed the heat tolerance of mutants defective in DNA methylation, his-tone modifications, chromatin-remodeling, or siRNA-based silencing pathways. Plants deficient in NRPD2, the common second-largest subunit of RNA polymerases Iv and v, and in the Rpd3-type histone deacetylase HDA6 were hypersensi- tive to heat exposure. Microarray analysis demonstrated that NRPD2 and HDA6 have independent roles in transcriptional reprogramming in response to temperature stress. The misexpression of protein-coding genes in nrpd2 mutants recover-ing from heat correlated with defective epigenetic regulation of adjacent transposon remnants which involved the loss of control of heat-stress-induced read-through transcription. We provide evidence that the transcriptional response to temperature stress, at least partially, relies on the integrity of the RNA-dependent DNA methylation pathway.

Nonconservative mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints

A geometric setting for generally nonconservative mechanical systems on fibred manifolds is proposed. Emphasis is put on an explicit formulation of nonholonomic mechanics when an unconstrained Lagrangian system moves in a generally non-potential force field depending on time, positions and velocities, and the constraints are nonholonomic, not necessarily linear in velocities. Equations of motion, and the corresponding Hamiltonian equations in intrinsic form are given. Regularity conditions are found and a nonholonomic Legendre transformation is proposed, leading to a canonical form of the nonholonomic Hamiltonian equations for nonconservative systems.

Poaching and trans-boundary trafficking of tigers and body parts are threatening the world’s last remaining wild *** of an efficient molecular genetic assay for tracing the origins of confiscated specimens will assist in law enforcement and wildlife forensics for this iconic flagship *** developed a multiplex genotyping system“tigrisPlex”to simultaneously assess 22 short tandem repeat(STR,or microsatellite)loci and a gender-identifying SRY gene,all amplified in 4 reactions using as little as 1 ng of template *** DNA samples used for between-run calibration,the system generates STR genotypes that are directly compatible with voucher tiger subspecies genetic profiles,hence making it possible to identify subspecies via bi-parentally inherited *** applied“tigrisPlex”to 12 confiscated specimens from Russia and identified 6 individuals(3 females and 3 males),each represented by duplicated samples and all designated as Amur tigers(Panthera tigris altaica)with high *** STR multiplex system can serve as an effective and versatile approach for genetic profiling of both wild and captive tigers as well as confiscated tiger products,fulfilling various conservation needs for identifying the origins of tiger samples.
