Influence of polyolefin fibers on the strength and deformability properties of road pavement concrete

Influence of the type and quantity of polyolefin fibers on the strength properties(compression strength, tensile strength in bending, strength in uniaxial tension), the deformation properties(elastic modulus, Poisson’s coefficient) and the abrasion resistance of cement concrete with water-to-cement ratio within 0.31 e0.55 were stated in the *** ways of fibers introduction into fresh concrete were investigated. It was shown that the fibers introduction method and procedure of mixing are the ways to improve the fibers uniform distribution in fresh concrete. The increase of the bending tensile strength and the uniaxial tensile strength of concrete with fibers reinforcement in comparison with the reference concrete was observed with the water-to-cement ratio decrease. The increase of uniaxial tensile strength at age of 28 days for concrete with macrofibers in amount of4.5 kg/m^3 was 23% and 29%;for macrofibers in quantity of 3 kg/m^3 was 19% and 26% with water-cement ratio equal to 0.49 and 0.31, respectively. The.maximum reduction of abrasion in the range of 7.5%e10% was observed in concrete with water-to-cement ratio within0.44 e0.55 for all investigated types of fibers. The influence of fibers on the concrete abrasion with lower W/C ratio was negligible. The results can contribute to the rational use of modified polyolefin fibers in road pavement concrete.

Performance of low temperature microbial Fuel Cells(mFCs)catalyzed by mixed bacterial consortia

microbial Fuel Cells（mFCs） are a promising technology for treating wastewater in a sustainable manner. In potential applications, low temperatures substantially reduce mFC performance. To better understand the effect of temperature and particularly how bioanodes respond to changes in temperature, we investigated the current generation of mixed-culture and pure-culture mFCs at two low temperatures, 10°C and 5°C. The results implied that the.mixed-culture mFC sustainably performed better than the pure-culture（Shewanella） mFC at 10°C, but the electrogenic activity of anodic bacteria was substantially reduced at the lower temperature of 5°C. At 10°C, the.maximum output voltage generated with the.mixed-culture was 540–560 m V, which was 10%–15% higher than that of Shewanella mFCs. The.maximum power density reached 465.3 ± 5.8 m W/m^2 for the.mixed-culture at10°C, while only 68.7 ± 3.7 m W/m^2 was achieved with the pure-culture. It was shown that the anodic biofilm of the.mixed-culture mFC had a lower overpotential and resistance than the pure-culture mFC. Phylogenetic analysis disclosed the prevalence of Geobacter and Pseudomonas rather than Shewanella in the.mixed-culture anodic biofilm, which mitigated the increase of resistance or overpotential at low temperatures.

Clustering of Pathogen-Response Genes in the Genome of Arabidopsis thaliana

Previously, we used heterologous expressed sequence tag （EST） mapping to generate a profile of 4 935 pathogen-response genes of Arabidopsis thaliana. In this work, we performed a computer analysis of this profile, revealing 1594 non-homologous clustered genes distributed among all A. thafiana chromosomes, whose co-regulation may be related to host responses to pathogens. To supplement computer data, we arbitrarily selected two clusters and analyzed their expression levels in A. thaliana ecotypes Col-0 and C24 during infection with the yellow strain of Cucumber mosaic virus CmV（Y）. Ecotype Col-0 is susceptible to CmV（Y）, whereas C24 contains the dominant resistance gene RCY1. Upon infection with CmV（Y）, all clustered genes were significantly activated in the resistant ecotype C24. In addition, we demonstrated that posttranslational histone modifications associated with trimethylation of histone H3 lysine 27 are most likely involved in regulation of several cluster genes described in this study. Overall, our experiments indicated that pathogen-response genes in the genome of A. thaliana may be clustered and co-regulated.

Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a rare complication that develops after partial orcomplete turbinectomy. The.main feature of ENS is paradoxical nasal obstructionfeeling despite objectively wide nasal airway. ENS pathogenesis is multifactorialand includes changes in laminar physiological airflow, disruption of mucosafunctions and deficient neural sensation. This leads to the development of ENSsymptomatology such as dyspnea, nasal dryness, nasal burning, nasalobstruction, feeling of suffocation and even comorbid psychiatric disorders thatsignificantly impairs life quality. Specific effective treatment of ENS does not existup to date. In this review we outline existing biomaterial for surgical reconstitutionof nasal anatomy and discuss the perspective of stem cell-based technologiesin ENS management. The.main focus is directed to justification ofrationality application of adult mesenchymal stem cells (mSCs) from differenttissues origin and neural crest-derived stem cells (NCSCs) based on their intrinsicbiological properties. mSCs transplantation may stimulate mucosa tissueregeneration via trophic factors secretion, direct transdifferentiation into epithelialcells and pronounced immunosuppressive effect. From the other hand, NCSCsbased on their high neuroprotective properties may reconstitute nerve structureand functioning leading to normal sensation in ENS patients. We postulate thatapplication of cell-based and tissue-engineered products can help to significantlyimprove ENS symptomatology only as complex approach aimed at reconstitutionof nasal anatomy, recovery the nasal mucosa functionality and neural tissuesensation.

Physiological and biochemical characteristic of miscanthus×giganteus grown in heavy metal-oil sludge co-contaminated soil

The effect of oil sludge and zinc,present in soil both separately and as a mixture on the physiological and biochemical parameters of miscanthus×giganteus plant was examined in a pot *** opposite effect of pollutants on the accumulation of plant biomass was established:in comparison with uncontaminated control the oil sludge increased,and Zn reduced the root and shoot *** sludge had an inhibitory effect on the plant photosynthetic apparatus,which intensified in the presence of *** specific antioxidant response of m.×giganteus to the presence of both pollutants was a marked increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase(mostly owing to oil sludge)and glutathione-S-transferase(mostly owing to zinc)in the *** participation of glutathione-S-transferase in the detoxification of both the organic and the inorganic pollutants was *** inhibited the activity of laccase-like oxidase,whereas oil sludge promoted laccase and ascorbate oxi-dase *** finding suggests that these enzymes play a part in the oxidative detox-ification of the organic *** both pollutants used jointly,Zn accumulation in the roots increased 6-fold,leading to increase in the efficiency of soil clean-up from the *** turn,Zn did not significantly affect the soil clean-up from oil *** study shows for the first time the effect of co-contamination of soil with oil sludge and Zn on the phys-iological and biochemical characteristics of the bioenergetic plant m.×*** data obtained are important for understanding the.mechanisms of phytoremediation with this plant.

Cell-based technologies are used as a therapeutic strategy in spinal cord injury(SCI). mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs), which secrete various neurotrophic factors and cytokines, have immunomodulatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, modulate reactivity/phenotype of astrocytes and the.microglia, thereby promoting neuroregeneration seem to be the.most promising. The therapeutic effect of mSCs is due to a paracrine mechanism of their action, therefore the survival of mSCs and their secretory phenotype is of particular importance. Nevertheless, these data are not always reported in efficacy studies of mSC therapy in SCI. here, we provide a review with summaries of preclinical trials data evaluating the efficacy of mSCs in animal models of SCI. Based on the data collected, we have tried(1) to establish the behavior of mSCs after transplantation in SCI with an evaluation of cell survival, migration potential, distribution in the area of injured and intact tissue and possible differentiation;(2) to determine the effects mSCs on neuronal microenvironment and correlate them with the efficacy of functional recovery in SCI;(3) to ascertain the conditions under which mSCs demonstrate their best survival and greatest efficacy.

Females choose gentle, but not healthy or macho males in Campbell dwarf hamsters （Phodopus campbelli Thomas 1905）

Androgen-dependent male sexual traits （STs） as well as immunocompetence are theoreticallyassumed to be key indicators of a male＇s quality for the.mate-choosing female. We studied matechoice by sexually motivated （Sm） females of Campbell＇s dwarf hamsters. Females chose between2 tethered male siblings that differed in expression of STs. males were unrelated to the female andable to contact and copulate with her. In both males, we measured sex-related morphology ofbody mass, mid-ventral specific skin gland, ano-genital distance, and external testicular *** also estimated levels of blood testosterone and cortisol, specific T- and B-cell immune re-sponses to antigens, as well as aggressive and sexual dominance in sibling males through add-itional encounter experiments with another Sm female （male sibs could freely compete for thefemale）. We found that Sm females chose a partner among 2 male sibs and spent over 80% of theirtime on average with the preferred male compared with the non-preferred one. her choice was notassociated with the first visit of the chosen male, with a higher expression of sex-related traits,higher levels of blood testosterone, or with aggressive dominance. The choice was not associatedwith the intensity of T-cell immune response to phitohemagglutinin （PHA）. Instead there was a ten-dency for a negative relationship with the expression of STs and B-cell response to the antigenchallenge. The only character that unambiguously influenced female choice was the non-aggressive male to female grooming during sexual contact. There was no difference in breedingsuccess between preferred and non-preferred males paired with virgin females.
