Tea is grown in Bangladesh under marginal climatic and soil conditions. Its production is greatly influenced by many physical, chemical, biological and natural factors. The increasing land use intensity without adequate and balanced use of chemical fertilizers and with little or no use of organic manure has caused severe fertility deterioration of our soils resulting in stagnating or even declining of crop productivity. The need of the hour is to achieve substantially higher crop yield than the present yield levels from our limited land resources on a sustainable basis. A feasibility study was carried out of one and only organic tea garden namely Kazi & Kazi Tea Estate at Panchaghar and compared to ordinary tea gardens located at sylhet namely Zareen Tea Estate, Nurjahan Tea Estate and Malnichara Tea Estate as secondary data to investigate the fertility status of soil. Results of the present study showed that soil solutions were acidic in nature in all seasons. Medium to high soil organic matter, medium to high available iron and phosphorous, and low availability of potash showed that soils were not sufficiently fertile for crop production. student t-test values of all the parameters with control sample showed statistically significant results for sOM and available P. The critical values have been fixed at 0.1% for N and 1% for OM, 10 μg/g for P, 80 μg/g for K, 25 μg/g for Mg, 90 μg/g for Ca, 2 μg/g for Zn and 20 μg/g for s. The nutrient status is much higher in Kazi & Kazi organic tea estate in compared to other ordinary tea estates in Bangladesh.

The Dependency of Coastal Livelihood on Forest Resources, and Alternative Options in the Periphery of the sundarbans Reserve Forest, Patharghata, Bangladesh

Dependency on forest resources poses a threat to the environment in Patharghata, Bangladesh. Therefore, this study explores the role of forest resource in the life and livelihood of coastal people as well as to understand the effectiveness of forest and status of forest dependency in and around south-central coast in Patharghata, Bangladesh. We collected data randomly from 105 household heads through both open and close-ended questionnaire. To investigate the forest dependency and people’s perception regarding alternative solutions, Microsoft excel software program has been applied. The findings reveal that usage of fuelwood in cooking, housing structure, fish catching, honey & fodder collection significantly contributes to household dependency on forest resources, while other variables seem to be insignificant. Our study amplifies that the share of forest income to the total household income was only 19% while other earning sources providespan>span>dspan>span>span style="font-family:Verdana;">span style="font-family:Verdana;">span style="font-family:Verdana;"> 81% income. The result shows that respondent people collect forest resources primarily for cooking purpose with a share of 71% where 9% forest resources are collected as fodder followed by 8% forest resource collection as food and sheltering purposes. Moreover, the study found that using alternative cooking system, artificial instruments, declaring the forest as tourist spot, changes in housing structure, occupation are some effective options to reduce forest dependency. The study concludes that these alternative options need more financial and other support from the government, non-government and other civil society organizations to cut down forest resource dependency.

In vivo anticancer activity of vanillin semicarbazone

Objective:To evaluate the anticancer activity of vanillin semicarbazone(VsC) against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC) cells in swiss albino ***:The compound VsC at three doses(5, 7.5 and 10 mg/kg i.p.) was administered into the intraperitoneal cavity of the EAC inoculated mice to observe its efficiency by studying the cell growth inhibition, reduction of tumour weight,enhancement of survival time as well as the changes in depleted hematological parameters. Allsuch parameters were also studied with a known standard drug bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg(i.p.).Results:Among the doses studied, 10 mg/kg(i.p.) was found to be quite comparable in potency to that of bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg(i.p.). The host toxic effects of VsC was found to be ***:It can be concluded that VsC can therefore be considered as potent anticancer agent.

Objective:To evaluate the performance of preliminary phytochemical,antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Dracaena cinnabari Balf.f.(Agavaceae)(***)resin,collected from socotra Island(Yemen).Methods:The powdered stem resin is extracted with different solvents by using soxhlet apparatus and evaluated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against three Gram positive bacteria(Bacillus cereus NCIM 2106,staphylococcus aureus NCIM 2127,and Micrococcus luteus NCIM 2169),seven Gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coli NCIM 2924,Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCIM 2863,salmonella typhimurium NCIM 2501,Klebsiella aerogenes NCIM 2281,Proteus morganii NCIM 2860,Escherichia coli dh5α,Escherichia coli CsH)and three fungi(Candida albicans MTCC 227,Aspergillus flavus MTCC 873,Aspergillus niger MTCC 1781).Results:The antimicrobial activity data revealed that,the selected microorganisms possess varied sensitivity response to chloroform extract followed by methanol and benzene extract of *** stem *** samples also possess a potent DPPH,OH and sO radical scavenging *** addition,the preliminary phytochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids and other organic compounds which could be reason for antimicrobial activities of *** ***:The present study is strengthened for the discovery and development of new antioxidant and antimicrobial drugs from *** resin which encourage us to continue with pure fractions.

span style="font-family:Verdana;">strong>Introduction: strong>Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection that was first reported in Wuhan, China on 31 December 2019. This study aimed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of 500 first COVID-19 in the Najran region, saudi Arabia. strong>Material and Methods:strong> A multi-center retrospective study design was employed to study the first 500 confirmed COVID-19 positive cases in Najran province, Kingdom of saudi Arabia (KsA). Data were collected from 1 March 2020 until 1 July 2020 and provided by the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) department from the hospitals. Included cases were confirmed using real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Demographic, vital signs, symptoms, incubation period, travel or exposure history medical history, and comorbidities were collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association between potential risk factors associated with symptoms occurrence of COVID-19. strong>Results:strong> The median age of 500 COVID-19 patients was 31 years;333 (66.6%) males. A total of 34 (6.8%) were Healthcare Workers (HCWs). Out of the 500 patients, 180 (36%) had at least one comorbid disease. The most common symptoms on admission were fever 281 (56.2%), cough 266 (53.2%), shortness of breath 166 (33.2%), and malaise 113 (22.6%). Most of the patients presented with mild disease severity 310 (62%). Nationality, age, and Diabetes Miletus (DM) were independently and significantly associated with being symptomatic (P saudi nationals, other nationality patients were most likely to have symptoms (β = 2.968, CI = 2.002 - 4.400, P = 0.0010). For every 1 year increase in age, the risk of being symptomatic increased by 5.8% (β = 1.045, CI = 1.033 - 1.058, P = 0.001). Compared with non-DM patients, DM patients had a 4.05 times higher risk (β = 4.05, CI = 2.188 - 7.507, P = 0.0
