Development of Polycaprolactone/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/clay Microparticles by Spray Drying

In this study, nanostructured microparticles was developed with polycaprolactone (PcL), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) and nanoparticles of the commercial sodium clay NT-25®by using the spray drying technique. The systems obtained were characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Laser Light Scattering (DLS) and Differential Scanning calorimetry (DSc). The NMR 13c and FTIR techniques showed that both polymers were present in the microparticles and the DSc analysis revealed a small variation in the glass transition temperature of the PcL. The XRD and SEM analyses showed that the microparticles produced were amorphous and had a concave morphology. The NT-25 nanoload reduced the microparticles’ size due to the multiple interactions formed in the hybrid nanocomposite material. Therefore, it was possible to develop microparticles by using biodegradable and biocompatible polymers, with different polarities, allowing the incorporation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials and enabling the inclusion of otherwise incompatible materials in the same system.

This paper aims to identify the prevalence of frailty syndrome and its association with demographic, economic, health, psychological and functional variables in Brazilian population. The study was cross-sectional and composed of 385 elderly aged from 65 years, an average age of 73.92 years. A multivariate Poisson regression was used to check for conditions associated with frailty and to determine the prevalence (α = 0.05). The prevalence of frailty was 8.7% and pre-frailty of 50.4%. The frail and pre-frail older adults showed larger and increasing prevalence ratios for marital status, difficulty performing instrumental activities of daily living, old age, involuntary loss of feces, depression and negative affections. These results can guide the establishment of preventive measures and the development of intervention strategies aimed at minimizing the adverse effects of frailty in elderly people.

The aim of this study was to determine the biological aspects and thermal requirements of Harmonia axyridis Pallas (coleoptera: coccinellidae) fed daily with Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lep-idoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. Under laboratory conditions, the experiment was carried out in acclimatized chambers set to 18°c, 21°c, 24°c, 27°c, and 30°c. Larvae of H. axyridis were separated, kept in a glass tube, and fed with A. kuehniella eggs. The Asiatic lady beetle adults were separated into 20 couples and kept in plastic cups receiving the same food as the larvae. The length of the larval, pupal, and total biological cycle (from egg to adult) stages declined significantly from 18°c to 27°c, but was stable between 27°c and 30°c. Survival was similar for larvae from the first to the fourth stadium when kept at 18°c, 21°c, and 24°c with a higher total biological cycle survival at 27°c. H. axyridis males presented higher longevity at 18°c and 21°c in comparison to females that had a longer life and a higher fecundity at 24°c and 27°c, respectively. The lower thermal limit for biological cycle development was 12.4°c, and the thermal constant was 243.9 degree-days.

The characterization and prevalence of virulence factors associated with enterococcal invasiveness and severity of disease are important areas to be investigated. Recently, we described the production of a heat-stable hemolysin by clinical isolates of Enterococcus faecalis cultived in BHI-GA (BHI with glucose and L-arginine). Now, we purified the hemolysin from the culture supernatant by ultra-filtration (PM-10 membrane) and ethanol extraction followed by chromatography in a mBondapak c18 and Superdex Peptide columns. The hemolytic activity was not affected by the proteolytic enzymes. cholesterol, phospholipids, EDTA and also bivalent ions did not inhibit the hemolytic activity. Among the various carbohydrates, only dextran 4 protected the erythrocytes against lyse. Scanning electron microscopy showed that lyse of erythrocytes occured at once after the exposure to the hemolysin. The mito-chondrial activity and the cell membrane integrity were significantly affected by the hemolysis, within 20 min of exposure and caused apoptosis after 12 h incubation, 51.92% in HeLa and 68% in HEp-2 cells, analyzed by flow cytometry. These results suggest that the heat-stable pore forming hemolysin might be a putative virulence factor in enterococci infections.

A classical field theory for a Schrodinger equation with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing a particle with position-dependent mass has been recently advanced by Nobre and Rego-monteiro(NR)[***.A 88(2013)032105].This field theory is based on a variational principle involving the wavefunction Ψ(x,t) and an auxiliary fieldΦ{x,t).It is here shown that the relation between the dynamics of the auxiliary field Φ(x,t) and that of the original wavefunction Ψ(x,t) is deeper than suggested by the NR ***,we formulate a variational principle for the aforementioned Schrodinger equation which is based solely on the wavefunction Ψ(x,t).A continuity equation for an appropriately defined probability density,and the concomitant preservation of the norm,follows from this variational principle via Noether's ***,the norm-conservation law obtained by NR is reinterpreted as tie preservation of the inner product between pairs of solutions of the variable mass Schrodinger equation.

Dehydrated Natural Feed for cats: Influence on Apparent Digestibility coefficient, Feces Scores, and Serum Immune, Antioxidant, and Metabolic Biomarkers

The present study aimed to determine whether natural dehydrated feed (DNF) can replace dry extruded feed while preserving the required daily intake, nutrient digestibility and benefits for immunity and antioxidant response in cats. The animals were divided into two groups of seven animals each. one group received DNF, and the other consumed commercial extruded dry feed (DcF). The experiment lasted 45 days and we measured daily consumption and collected blood and feces samples. The animals in the DNF group showed greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter than DcF. cats in the DNF group had a higher volume of feces. DNF cats had lower leukocyte and granulocyte counts and cholesterol levels. Serum enzymatic antioxidant responses and non-enzymatic were higher in DNF cats. cats in the DNF group showed lower serum acute phase proteins in addition to a tendency toward a higher concentration of transferrin than in the DcF group. Fecal Escherichia coli and total coliform counts of cats fed DNF were higher than DcF. We conclude that the daily consumption of cats is adequate. This feed had greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter, in addition to an improvement in antioxidant and immunological responses.

The diagnosis of liver cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis c has not always been easy, since the gold standard method is the liver biopsy, which is an invasive procedure with interobserver accuracy problems and there have been reports of complications including records of deaths due to hemoperitoneum. cirrhosis changes the prognosis of the subject with hepatitis c and requires a different clinical management. This study aimed to identify clinical and laboratory variables associated with the diagnosis of cirrhosis in the ultrasonography of patients infected with hepatitis c. In a case-control study, we evaluated 70 cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis c compared to a control group of 70 non-cirrhotic people with positive HcV. The results showed, through logistic regression analysis, that the variables blood donor and professional athlete, adjusted for alcohol consumption, showed oR 0.24 and 0.18, with p values of 0.044 and 0.035, respectively. We conclude that the diagnosis of cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis c remains challenging, but the patients with the condition of blood donor or professional athlete prove to be less likely to cirrhosis in ultrasonography in the initial consultation.
