Teaching Indigenous Knowledge System to Revitalize and Maintain Vulnerable Aspects of Indigenous Nigerian Languages’ Vocabulary:The Igbo Language Example

The Igbo language curriculum for pupils and students at the primary and secondary levels shows no provision for the teaching of any aspects of Igbo indigenous knowledge systems and this is resulting in the attrition and atrophy of vocabulary items associated with such knowledge systems,especially in the speech of primary and secondary students in urban and semi-urban areas of Igbo speech communities where the practices of the knowledge systems are quite *** paper examines the benefits derivable from integrating indigenous Igbo knowledge systems into the Igbo language curriculum(through comprehension passages,practical discussions,excursions,audio-visual materials,dramatization,etc.)for both the senior primary pupils and the secondary school students of Igbo origin in south-eastern *** data presented in the study were collected through interviews from selected *** study notes that integrating indigenous Igbo knowledge systems into the Igbo language curriculum of both pupils and students will afford pupils/students the opportunities to:(i)learn the indigenous Igbo knowledge systems and positive attitudes/values embedded in them(ii)learn through the Igbo culture(iii)learn across generations(iv)learn from the‘known’in the Igbo culture to the‘unknown’(v)learn outside the *** paper further highlights sample vocabulary items associated with some indigenous Igbo knowledge systems which students/pupils can learn and familiarize themselves with in contextual *** paper concludes that learning through the teaching of the indigenous Igbo knowledge systems will enhance the revitalization,preservation and maintenance of the Igbo language and culture and also encourage intergenerational transfer of the language.

objective:To investigate the relationship between enterobiasis and enuresis before and after albendazole therapy among 632 children,aged,5-14 years,in Calabar,***:The scotch tape(cellotape) technique was used for the detection of eggs of Enterobius vermicularis (***) while questionnaire-based interviews were used for screening for anal itching and/or enuresis among study *** subjects found positive for Enterobius infection as confirmed by the presence of eggs and those with persistent anal itching(both enuretic and nonenuretic) were treated with 400 mg of albendazole given as a single *** treated subjects were re-assessed post-treatment to ascertain whether they were cured and also to determine their enuretic status(for the entireties).Results:The overall prevalences of Enterobius infection, anal itching,and enuresis prior to albendazole therapy were 6.8%,42.9%,and 35.6%respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of these parameters by the socio-economic class of subjects(P = 0.462,P - 0.647,and P = 0.610,respectively).The pretreatment prevalences of enuresis among Enterobius and anal itching-positive subjects were 53.5%and 49.8%,respectively versus 34.3%and 24.9%,respectively among their negative counterpart(P = 0.012 and P our(20%) out of the 20 enuretic children found Enterobius egg-negative after albendazole therapy were equally cured while 8(40%) had reduction of their enuresis,thus giving a total resolution rate of 60%.Similarly,64.2%resolution (25%cure and 32.8%reduction) of enuresis was observed amongst 120 anal itching-cured/ enuretic *** status of the Enterobius-lanal itching-uncured subjects,on the other hand,remained unchanged ***:This study is suggestive of the involvement of *** in the aetiology of enuresis in *** presenting with, especially,uncomplicated enuresis should be screened for en

Each Internet communication leaves trails that can be followed back to the user. Notably, anonymous communication schemes are purposed to hide users identity as to personal, source, destination location and content information. Notably, no network capability is in existence to completely negate anonymity leakage in network latency[1], thus, the minimization of anonymity leakage in network latency becomes critically salient. The purpose of this paper is to investigate network latency anonymity leaks, and propose practical techniques for their reduction. In this direction, the author investigate the following technical question: What implementation techniques can be configured to truly reduce anonymity leaks using deployable systems and exploiting the popular Tor security strategies.

Risk Matrix as a Tool for Risk Analysis in Underwater operations in the oil and Gas Industry

The study is a cross-sectional design assessment of the likelihood, frequency and severity of hazards associated with underwater operations in the Niger Delta. Five oil and gas companies were used for this study selected by a purposive method given that they had the highest number of workers involved in underwater operations. A sample size of 418 was computed to which the questionnaires were administered with response rate of 95.93%. Data analyses were carried out to cover descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and Pearsonal correlation coefficients. The 4 by 4 risk assessment matrix for the likelihood and consequences showed that 8 out of 20 underwater hazards were categorized as having very high risk according to their risk ratings. The eight hazards categorized based on their risk IDs were H01, H03, H04, H08, H10, H11, H12, and H15. The 4 by 4 risk matrix for frequency and consequences revealed that two hazards (Piracy & bandit attack/kidnapping (H01) and other main vessels/heavy object dropping or falling load/collision (H08)) were identified to be of very high risk.

Complementiser and Complement Clause Preference for Verb-Heads in the Written English of Nigerian Undergraduates

This paper examines complementiser and complement clause preference for verb-heads in the written English of Nigerian undergraduates. Data for the study were obtained from the respondents through a written test designed to elicit the preference of complementisers and complement clause types of some verb-heads in English. The findings of the study showed a higher preference for clausal complements introduced by the complementiser that. of the entire tokens of clausal complements in the data collected, 128 of them(54.46%) were complement clauses headed by that, while complement clauses introduced by whether and if complementisers had preference scores of 31.07% and 8.94% respectively. The complement clause-type which recorded the lowest preference was the one headed by the complementiser for(5.53%). Further findings from the study revealed that the semantic features of relevant embedding verb heads were sometimes not taken into consideration in the choice of complementisers which introduce certain complement clauses. The low preference of the forclause is explicable in terms of the fact that the respondents regarded for as a preposition, and not a complementiser.

The Practice of Palliative Care amongst Nurses in Selected Hospitals in Eastern Nigeria

In recent times, palliative care nursing has caught the attention of nurse researchers in Africa as more individuals are being diagnosed with chronic diseases of the aged like cancer, cardiac and cerebrovascular conditions. This study examined the influence of knowledge and attitude on the practice of palliative care among practicing nurses in eastern part of Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used for the study. The population of the study is all registered, licensed and practicing nurses working in the named public and private hospitals where palliative care is supposedly well established. Proportionate sampling technique was used to select 289 respondents. Three commercial instruments that were modified were used for data collection. Level of significance was set at 5%. The study was conducted from october 2018 to June 2019. Results revealed that 52.7% of the respondents had satisfactory practice of palliative care, 73.7% of the respondents had adequate knowledge of palliative care (mean 2.64 (1.06) and 77.5% of the respondents had positive attitude towards palliative care (Mean 2.81 (1.14)). There was also a significant weak positive association between nurses’ educational level and their knowledge of palliative care with an effect size of 21.9% (P = 0.003). There was also a significant association between nurses’ years of experience and their attitude to palliative care with an effect size of 35.6% (P o significant association between type of hospital facility nurses work in and their practice of palliative care (P = 0.343). Recommendations were made on how to improve the practice of palliative care among professional nurses.

The Igbo traditional society is patriarchal in nature with a prevalence of gender stereotypes. Men train their male children to grow up bold, strong, courageous, audacious and fearless while women on the other hand groom their female children to be soft-spoken, subservient and gentle. both men and women have accepted their gender roles as a characterization which fate and destiny have bestowed on them, and are sensitized and indoctrinated in such a way that there are no conflicts between the two groups on the basis of their inherent traditional roles(cf. ozumba, 2005). In the context of the Igbo traditional setting and within the confines of the gender stereotypes women are generally not viewed or perceived by their male counterparts as having the same status. This perception of women is often reflected in the social use of language to the extent that women are sometimes socially addressed and described with biased and discriminatory linguistic remarks and expressions. This paper descriptively examines, from semantic and pragmatic viewpoints, some discriminatory and biased Igbo linguistic expressions used by some men against women in contemporary Igbo society. The data for the study were collected mainly through oral interviews. The findings reveal that women are addressed and described with derogatory linguistic terms and imagery, portrayed as inferior to men. Based on the findings, the paper recommends a re-orientation of Igbo men from a young age, starting with parental discouragement of this trend in the home. Further studies on the general attitude towards women in contemporary Igbo society as linguistically expressed are suggested since such studies will constitute veritable sources of research information.

Intrauterine diagnosis of small intestinal volvulus is extremely rare;a small bowel volvulus may be caused, by an atresia or malrotation, and it can also be an etiology for intestinal atresia. Early antenatal diagnosis of fetal intestinal volvulus is difficult. Care full and meticulous prenatal radiological investigations in the experience hand may suggest the diagnosis. We present a male child who presented 9 hours after birth with gangrenous proximal dilated loop volvulus in a type III B intestinal atresia diagnosed intraoperative and was treated successfully. Presence of focal abdominal wall edema in a newborn with intestinal obstruction may suggest this diagnosis.
