Sicilian serpentinite xenoliths containing abiotic organics with nanodiamond clusters as key model for prebiotic processes

Rock fragments from the deepest parts of a buried hydrothermal system belonging to the Mesozoic Tethys Ocean entered as xenoliths in a Miocenic diatreme,hence brought to the surface,in the Hyblean Plateau(Sicily).Some xenoliths consist of strongly serpentinized ultramafic rocks bearing blebs of abiotic organic matter,where clusters of amorphous carbon nanoparticles,including nanodiamonds,are *** an occurrence conjures up established hypotheses that diamond surfaces are suitable catalytic platforms stimulating the assemblage of complex bio-organic molecules relevant to the emergence of life on *** appearance of bio-organic molecules under primitive Earth conditions is one of the major unsolved questions on the origin of *** we report new micro-Raman spectra on blebs of abiotic organic matter from a selected *** bands were related to hydrogenated nanocrystalline diamonds,with size of nearly 1-1.6 nm,formed from organics at low pressures and *** particular,diamond surfaces can give rise to crystalline interfacial water layers that may have played a fundamental role in the early biosphere evolution as a good medium for rapidly transporting positive charges in the form of hydrated ***,proton gradients in alkaline hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges are generally viewed as key pre-biotic *** general,serpentinites span the entire geological record,including prebiotic *** hydrous ultramafic rocks often display evidence of abiotic carbon species,both organic and inorganic,including nanodiamonds,being also capable to give rise to chemiosmotic processes and proton gradients necessary to the organisms,such as the"Last Universal Common Ancestor"(LUCA),in the prebiotic Earth.

SERS-based lateral flow immunoassay of troponin I by using gapenhanced Raman tags

The lateral flow immuno assay (LFIA) has emerged as a powerful tool for rapid scree ning owing to its simplicity and flexibility for detection of various biomarkers. However, conventional LFIA strips have several disadvantages, including limits in quantitative analysis and low sensitivity. Here we developed a novel surface-e nhanced Rama n scatteri ng LFIA based on non spherical gap-e nhanced Raman tags (GERTs), with Raman molecules (RMs) embedded in a 1-nm gap between Au nanorod core and Au shell. Such tags have a strong and uniform surface-enhanced Rama n scattering (SERS) resp on se, an order of mag nitude higher than that of other comm on SERS tags such as Au nano rods, nano stars, Au nano shells with surface-adsorbed RMs, or spherical GERTs with embedded RMs. The feasibility of the tags was dem on strated by the semiqua ntitative and sen sitive detecti on of the heart disease biomarker cardiac tropo nin I (cTnI). GERTs were conjugated with mono clonal antibodies and used for LFIA in the same way as ordinary functionalized colloidal gold. The presenee of the target antigen, cTnI, was identified by Raman microscopy mapping of the test zone. With the SERS-based LFIA, the limit of cTnI detection was about 0.1 ng/mL. This value is within the diagnostic range of cTnI in the blood serum of patients with heart infarction and is 30 times lower than that of the colorimetric LFIA test using the same antibodies and either GERTs or colloidal gold as labels.

The Governor of Puerto Rico signed in 2011 a Proclamation supporting the Decade of Action for Road Safety:2011-2020 in conjunction with a worldwide initiative approved by the United nations General Assembly aimed to establish action plans to reduce the alarming 1.3 million fatalities and the 50 million major injuries and disability related *** timely proclamation calls attention to the existing alarming traffic collisions in the Puerto Rico’s 26,866 centerline-km highway *** this paper,innovative programs that have been demonstrated to be successful in Puerto Rico during the first two years of the Decade of Action for Road Safety are presented along with their impacts on raising awareness regarding crash prevention and reducing fatalities in the existing highway *** from road user victims,victimizer,leaders and administrators of profit and nonprofit organizations are noted for assessing the program.A future five-year action plan for raising road user awareness is also prepared to address the governor’s proclamation for improving traffic safety.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal *** with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(nDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of *** study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of nDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one *** study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,Mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea *** images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from nASA/POWER *** AnOVA explored possible differences in nDVI among the three *** correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between nDVI and meteorological *** differences in nDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their *** grisea had the lowest nDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and *** the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for nDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

How to stabilize standard perovskite solar cells to withstand operating conditions under an ambient environment for more than 1000 hours using simple and universal encapsulation

We introduce a simple and universal scalable encapsulation strategy for perovskite solar cells based on thermal vacuum evaporation of MgF2or MoO3-xcapping layer followed by sealing the device with glass and UV-curable *** proposed encapsulation method is beneficial to most of the other known encapsulation approaches being fully harmless to perovskite and transporting layers and processible at room *** deposition of the capping layer promotes efficient removal of water,oxygen and organic solvent residuals from the device prior to sealing and could be easily performed using standard equipment for metal electrode *** proposed strategy is transferrable to any lab-scale perovskite solar cell prototypes regardless of their geometry and architecture and results in excellent stability of the devices in ambient air and long operating *** the 1000 hours stability test at ambient air(30%-60% RH),the cells preserved 92.9% of their initial efficiency on average under 1 Sun illumination at constant maximum power point tracking(MPPT,ISOS-L-1) and over 96% under sto rage in the dark(ISOS-D-1),thus evidencing for the high effectiveness of the proposed encapsulation approach.

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a spore-forming, toxin-producing, gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that is the principal etiologic agent of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Infection with C. difficile (CDI) is characterized by diarrhea in clinical syndromes that vary from selflimited to mild or severe. Since its initial recognition as the causative agent of pseudomembranous colitis, C. difficile has spread around the world. CDI is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among older adult hospitalized patients. Due to extensive antibiotic usage, the number of CDIs has increased. Diagnosis of CDI is often difficult and has a substantial impact on the management of patients with the disease, mainly with regards to antibiotic management. The diagnosis of CDI is primarily based on the clinical signs and symptoms and is only confirmed by laboratory testing. Despite the high burden of CDI and the increasing interest in the disease, episodes of CDI are often misdiagnosed. The reasons for misdiagnosis are the lack of clinical suspicion or the use of inappropriate tests. The proper diagnosis of CDI reduces transmission, prevents inadequate or unnecessary treatments, and assures best antibiotic treatment. We review the options for the laboratory diagnosis of CDI within the settings of the most accepted guidelines for CDI diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CDI.

In this paper, a system of fractional differential equations that model the synchronized bioluminescence behavior of a set of fireflies put on two spatial arrangements is presented; the alternative representation of these equations contains fractional operators of IAouvillc-Caputo type. The objective of the model is to qualitatively recover synchronization and show that it is persistent. It is shown that the effort made by each firefly glow changes with respect to the number of male competitors and the distance between them. The conditions on biological parameters are interpreted.

Recently gold nanoparticles(GnPs)have been actively studied as photot hermal converters,drug carriers,and imaging agents in a wide range of applications in cancer diagnosis and ther *** prolonged peroral administration of GnPs in a range of sizes was performed to investigate the morphological changes and their reversibility in the internal organs of laboratory *** this study,GnP's with average diameters of 2 nm,15 nm and 50nm were administered during 30 days,and the reversibility of morphological changes was investigated 14 days after *** the prolonged administration of GnPs,the severity of morphological changes in the liver,kidney,spleen and lymph nodes depended on the nanoparticle ***,50 nm nano-particles caused the most pronounced dystrophic and necrobiotic effects,whereas the smallest 2 nm nanoparticles caused proliferative *** importantly,the development of patho-logical processes was reversible,as evidenced by the gradual restoration of the organ structure at 14 days after the end of GnPs administration.

The paper presents the results of the sterlet sturgeon Acipenser ruthenus reintroduction into the kama Reservoir(Perm krai,Russia)by sterlet fry from hatcheries into the reservoir since *** effectiveness of hatchery releases was evaluated by monitoring gillnet sampling *** results showed that the species was reported throughout entire kama Reservoir,which contrasts with 1988-1994 data,when the species was registered only at the upper part of the reservoir near the kama River *** highest number and biomass values of catch per unit effort(CPUE)of the sterlet were found in submerged river channels-the deepest habitats with flow conditions which are close to the ecological requirements of the *** distribution of the sterlet within the channel biotopes of the reservoir is defined by reduced *** biggest individuals and the widest size range of the sterlet were typical for the upper area of the reservoir and Chusovskoy Bay,which have the greatest *** smallest sizes were typical for fish from catches near the dam of the reservoir,which is consistent with the published data on the distribution of sterlet in reservoir *** presented results may indicate the artificial formation of the sterlet stock in the kama Reservoir maintained by hatchery *** revealed distribution of the sterlet in the reservoir determines the direction of further research on natural reproduction and thus formation of an artificially formed ***,future studies are required to assess the possibility of hybridization of the sterlet of artificial origin with natural populations of the species,since the low genetic diversity of the sterlet released into the kama Reservoir which can lead to irreversible loss of genetic individuality of the natural stocks of the species in the catchment of upper course of the kama River.
