A case of Meropenem as a novel antibacterial agent to suppress and eliminate Agrobacterium tumefaciens in the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of orchid protocorm-like bodies （PLBs） has been reported in this article. The in vitro activities of meropenem and four comparator antibacterial agents against three Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains, LBA4404, EHA101, and GV3101, were assessed. In addition, the effect of meropenem on the growth of Dendrobium phalaenopsis PLBs was determined. Compared with other commonly used antibiotics （including ampicillin, carbenicillin, cefotaxime, and cefoperazone）, meropenem showed the highest activity in suppressing all tested A. tumefaciens strains （minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] 〈 0.5 mg L^-1, which is equal to minimum bactericidal concentration [MBC]）. Meropenem, at all tested concentrations, except for 10 mg L^-1 concentration, had little negative effect on the growth of orchid tissues. The A. tumefaciens strain EHA101 in genetic transformation with vector plG121Hm in infected PLBs of the orchid was visually undetectable after a two-month subculture in 1/2 MS medium with 50 mg L^-1 meropenem and 25 mg L^-1 hygromacin. The expression and incorporation of the transgenes were confirmed by GUS histochemical assay and PCR analysis. Meropenem may be an alternative antibiotic for the effective suppression of A. tumefaciens in genetic transformation.

In the brain, the oxygen demand changes time-by-time and space-by-space, so that the regional blood flow may be regulated to maintain blood flow toward other regions. For a good understanding of the cerebral flow regulation, it is quite important to make direct observation of the microcirculation in the cerebral tissue. To do this, we have developed a videomicroscopic technique for visualization of blood flow, using fluorescence tracers such as FITC-labeled red blood cells (RBC) and Rhodamin-dextran. Cerebral microcirculatory changes in hypovolemic hypotension we re investigat ed in rats with a cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB) during pulsatile and non-pulsati le flow. The hypovolemic hypotension was induced by reducing the CPB flow-rate. In the non-pulsatile flow, the cardiac beat was stopped using a fibrilator, whi le in the pulsatile flow the cardiac function was retained. The pial microcircul ation was observed and recorded during CPB, using fluorescence videomicroscopy. The arteriolar diameter and red cell velocity were measured based on the recorde d videoimages. The flow-rate was calculated from the measured diameter and veloc ity data. The present results showed that the flow-rate remained almost constant up to 60 mmHg arterial pressure during pulsatile flow. On the other hand, in n on-pulsatile flow, the flow-rate decreased with a decrease in arterial pressure, indicating the impairment of microvascular autoregulation. It was suggested th at pulsatile flow has an advantage over non-pulsatile flow in a view-point of ce rebral microcirculatory changes in hypovolemic hypotension. Collaborating researchers: Drs. T. We have proposed a reversible information hiding for binary images. In this paper, we present a lossless data hiding method for JPEG2000 compressed data based on the reversible information hiding. In JPEG2000 compression, wavelet coefficients of an image are quantized, therefore, the least significant bit plane (LSB) can be extracted. The proposed method recovers the quantized wavelet coefficients of cover images from Stego images. To realize this, we embed not only secret data and the JBIG2 bit-stream of a part of the LSB plane but also the bit-depth of the quantized coefficients on some code-blocks. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of application of the proposed method to image alteration detection for JPEG2000 compressed data.

This paper presents a modified QIM-JPEG2000 steganography which improves the previous JPEG2000 steganography using quantization index modulation (QIM). Since after-embedding changes on file size and PSNR by the modified QIM-JPEG2000 are smaller than those by the previous QIM-JPEG2000, the modified QIM-JPEG2000 should be more secure than the previous QIM-JPEG2000.

Aims: Trigeminal neuralgia is generally caused by neurovascular compression. In rare cases intracranial tumors may also lead to this condition. The present study was conducted to identify clinical symptoms and testing methods that are useful for early detection of trigeminal neuralgia associated with intracranial tumor. Methods: Five patients with trigeminal neuralgia suspected to be due to intracranial tumor, who visited our department for the first time during the period between February 2007 and March 2009, were examined. We analyzed the medical records and MRI findings of these patients. The clinical symptoms of subjects were compared to those presented at the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Results: There were no feature symptoms to trigeminal neuralgia caused by intracranial tumors compared with trigeminal neuralgia in general. None of the patients complained of spontaneous headache and nausea, which are clinical symptoms characteristic of brain tumor. Head MRI at our hospital was the most accurate method to detect intracranial tumors. Finally four of five patients received brain surgery to remove tumors. Conclusion: Small tumors and roots of the trigeminal nerve may not create accurate images by regular head MRI. Therefore, MRI using the imaging sequence which enables accurate visualization of roots of the trigeminal nerve is essential to confirm the presence of tumors in patients with suspected trigeminal neuralgia.
