Scalable arrays of chemical vapor sensors based on DNA-decorated graphene

Arrays of chemical vapor sensors based on graphene field effect transistors functionalized with single-stranded DNA have been demonstrated. Standard photolithographic processing was adapted for use on large-area graphene by including a metal protection layer, which protected the graphene from contamination and enabled fabrication of high quality field-effect transistors （GFETs）. Processed graphene devices had hole mobilities of 1,640 ± 250 cm2.V-1.s-1 and Dirac voltages of 15 ± 10 V under ambient conditions. Atomic force microscopy was used to verify that the graphene surface remained uncontaminated and therefore suitable for controlled chemical functionalization. Single-stranded DNA was chosen as the functionalization layer due to its affinity to a wide range of target molecules and π-π stacking interaction with graphene, which led to minimal degradation of device characteristics. The resulting sensor arrays showed analyte- and DNA sequence-dependent responses down to parts-per-billion concentrations. DNA/GFET sensors were able to differentiate among chemically similar analytes, including a series of carboxylic acids, and structural isomers of carboxylic acids and pinene. Evidence for the important role of electrostatic chemical gating was provided by the observation of understandable differences in the sensor response to two compounds that differed only by the replacement of a （deprotonating） hydroxyl group by a neutral methyl group. Finally, target analytes were detected without loss of sensitivity in a large background of a chemically similar, volatile compound. These results motivate further development of the DNA/graphene sensor family for use in an electronic olfaction system.

The effect of epigenetic sperm abnormalities on early embryogenesis

Sperm are a highly specialized cell type derived to deliver the paternal haploid genome to the oocyte. The epigenetic, or gene regulatory, properties and mechanisms of the sperm assist in preparation of the paternal genome to contribute to embryogenesis and the genome of the zygote. Many recent studies have addressed the issue of altered epigenetic processes in the sperm. This review evaluates the current understanding of DNA damage, chromosome aneuploidy, reduced telomere length, malformations of the centrosome, genomic imprinting errors, altered mRNA profiles, and abnormal nuclear packaging in the sperm prior to fertilization and the observed effects on embryogenesis. Attention has also been given to understanding the underlying etiology of sperm with altered epigenetic mechanisms in humans. （Asian j Androl 2006 Mar; 8： 131-142）

Influences and drivers of woody debris movement in urban watercourses

It is recognised that the blockage of culverts by woody debris can result in an increased risk of infrastructure damage and *** date,debris transport analysis has focused on regional fluvial systems and large woody debris,both in flume and field *** the social and economic risk associated with urban flooding,and as urban drainage design shifts away from subsurface piped network reliance,there is an increasing need to understand debris movement in urban *** prediction of urban watercourse small woody debris(SWD)movement,both quantity and risk,has undergone only limited analysis predominantly due to lack of field *** paper describes the development of a methodology to enable the collection of accurate and meaningful SWD residency and transportation data from *** presented research examines the limitations and effective function of PIT tag technology to collect SWD transport data in the field appropriate for risk and prediction *** integrated transponder(PIT)technology provides a method to collect debris transport data within the urban *** this study,the tags are installed within small woody debris and released at known locations into a small urban natural watercourse enabling monitoring of movement and travel *** velocity and detention are collated with solute time of travel,watercourse and point flow characteristics to identify the relationships between these key *** work presented tests three hypotheses:firstly,that the potential for unobstructed or un-detained SWD movement increases with flow velocity and water ***,that SWD travel distance,and the resistance forces along this travel path,influence SWD transport ***,the relationship between SWD and channel dimensions is examined with the aim of advancing representative debris transport prediction modelling.

In this paper,we perform two-layer high-throughput *** the first layer,which involves changing the crystal structure and/or chemical composition,we analyze selected Ⅲ-Ⅴ semiconductors,filled and unfilled skutterudites,as well as rock salt and layered *** second layer searches the full Brillouin zone(BZ)for critical points within 1.5 eV(1 eV=1.602176×10^(-19)j)of the Fermi level and characterizes those points by computing the effective *** introduce several methods to compute the effective masses from first principles and compare them to each *** approach also includes the calculation of the density-of-states effective masses for warped critical points,where traditional approaches fail to give consistent results due to an underlying non-analytic behavior of the critical *** demonstrate the need to consider the band structure in its full complexity and the value of complementary approaches to compute the effective *** also provide computational evidence that warping occurs only in the presence of degeneracies.

Effect of vaccination,border testing,and quarantine requirements on the risk of COVID-19 in New Zealand:A modelling study

We couple a simple model of quarantine and testing strategies for international travellers with a model for transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a partly vaccinated *** use this model to estimate the risk of an infectious traveller causing a community outbreak under various border control strategies and different levels of vaccine coverage in the *** are calculated from N¼100,000 independent realisations of the stochastic *** find that strategies that rely on home isolation are significantly higher risk than the current mandatory 14-day stay in government-managed ***,combinations of testing and home isolation can still reduce the risk of a community outbreak to around one outbreak per 100 infected *** also find that,under some circumstances,using daily lateral flow tests or a combination of lateral flow tests and polymerase chain reaction(PCR)tests can reduce risk to a comparable or lower level than using PCR tests *** with controls on the number of travellers from countries with high prevalence of COVID-19,our results allow different options for managing the risk of COVID-19 at the border to be *** can be used to inform strategies for relaxing border controls in a phased way,while limiting the risk of community outbreaks as vaccine coverage increases.

Role of c-Myc in lung cancer:Progress,challenges,and prospects

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths *** the recent advances in cancer therapies,the 5-year survival of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)patients hovers around 20%.Inherent and acquired resistance to therapies(including radiation,chemotherapies,targeted drugs,and combination therapies)has become a significant obstacle in the successful treatment of NSCLC.c-Myc,one of the critical oncoproteins,has been shown to be heavily associated with the malignant cancer phenotype,including rapid proliferation,metastasis,and chemoresistance across multiple cancer *** c-Myc proto-oncogene is amplified in small cell lung cancers(SCLCs)and overexpressed in over 50%of NSCLCs.c-Myc is known to actively regulate the tran-scription of cancer stemness genes that are recognized as major contributors to tumor progression and therapeutic resistance;thus,targeting c-Myc either directly or indirectly in mitigation of the cancer stemness phenotype be-comes a promising approach for development of a new strategy against drug resistant lung *** review will summarize what is currently known about the mechanisms underlying c-Myc regulation of cancer stemness and its involvement in drug resistance and offer an overview on the current progress and future prospects in therapeutically targeting c-Myc in both SCLC and NSCLC.

Patients with non-viral liver disease have a greater tumor burden and less curative treatment options when diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM To assess the impact of underlying liver disease etiology on the presenting features and outcomes in a large cohort of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). METHODS A prospective database of all patients with HCC was established from 1998 to March 2012. One thousand and seventy-eight patients were categorized into three groups, based on the etiology of their liver disease: hepatitis B virus(HBV), hepatitis C virus(HCV) and non-viral liver disease(NVLD). Overall survival was determined by Kaplan Meier analysis to time of death or last *** HCC patients with HCV(85%) were more likely to be diagnosed as part of a surveillance program, compared to HBV or NVLD(both 71%)(P < 0.001). Patients with NVLD were more likely to receive best supportive care(29%) compared to those with HBV(21%) or HCV(20%)(P < 0.02). Twelve percent of NVLD and 13% of HBV patients underwent liver transplantation compared to 21% of HCV patients(P = 0.001). Median survival from presentation was lowest in NVLD(1.7 years) when compared to HBV(2.8 years) and HCV(2.6 years)(P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, independent predictors of survival included Child Turcotte Pugh score, size of dominant lesion, absence of vascular invasion, and management with surgical resection or liver transplantation. Patient age and the etiology of the underlying liver disease were not independent predictors of survival CONCLUSION Patients with NVLD and HCC were less likely to be enrolled in a HCC surveillance program and are less likely to have curative therapies such as liver resection and transplantation after diagnosis with HCC, when compared to patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

SDS-PAGE analysis of whole cell protein and outer memrbane protein patterns of clinical isolates of Burkholderia pseudomallei

Objective:To investigate the banding patterns of whole cell protein(WCP) and outer membrane protein (OMP) of Burkholderia pseudomallei(***) in clinical isolates from patients with melioidosis. Methods:WCP and OMP of of *** in 50 clinical isolates,from 47 patients with melioidosis were prepared and separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(SDS-PAGE) using 10%gels and stained with Coomassie brilliant *** banding patterns were compared by using a laser densitometer and dendrogram. Results:There were 6 different banding patterns of WCP and 2 types of *** 1 -5 WCP had 8 common protein bands at 19.0 - 45.0 kDa with identical OMP *** banding patterns of WCP in type 6 were distinct from the others and also its OMP *** majority of clinical isolates(37/50,74%) were in type 1 *** the remaining isolates,8 were in type 2,2 in type 3,and one each was in type 4 to *** was no significant association between the WCP typing and the demographic or clinical features of the investigated ***:Despite the wide variation of clinical features of melioidosis,the results of this study show that *** had a few differences in the WCP and OMP *** typing of WCP and OMP,using SDS-PAGE analysis,could be an alternative method for phenotypic differentiation in clinical isolates of ***.
