Aims Canopy height is a key driver of forest biodiversity and carbon *** estimates of canopy height are needed for assess-ing mechanisms relating to ecological patterns and processes of tree height *** global scales forest canopy height patterns are largely controlled by climate,while local variation at fine scales is due to differences in disturbance history and local patterns in envir-onmental *** relative effect of local environmental driv-ers on canopy height is poorly understood partly due to gaps in data on canopy height and methods for examining limiting ***,we used airborne laser scanning(ALS)data on vegetation structure of boreal forests to examine the effects of environmental factors on potential maximum forest canopy *** Relationships between maximum canopy height from ALS meas-ures and environmental variables were examined to assess factors limiting tree ***,we used quantile regression at the 0.90 quantile to relate maximum canopy height with environmental characteristics of climate(*** annual temperature[MAT]and mean annual precipitation),terrain(***)and depth-to-water(DTW)across a 33000 km2 multiple use boreal forest landscape in northeast Alberta,*** Findings Maximum canopy height was positively associated with MAT,ter-rain slope and terrain-derived DTW,collectively explaining 33.2%of the variation in *** strongest explanatory variable was DTW explaining 26%of canopy height variation with peatland forests having naturally shorter maximum canopy heights,but also more sites currently at their maximum potential *** con-trast,the most productive forests(*** to xeric upland forests)had the fewest sites at their potential maximum height,illustrating the effects of long-term forest management,wildfires and general anthropogenic footprints on reducing the extent and abundance of older,taller forest habitat in Alberta’s boreal forest.

Raman spectroscopy-based temperature sensing usually tracks the change of Raman wavenumber,linewidth and intensity,and has found very broad applications in characterizing the energy and charge transport in nanomaterials over the last *** temperature coefficients of these Raman properties are highly material-dependent,and are subjected to local optical scattering *** a result,Raman-based temperature sensing usually suffers quite large uncertainties and has low ***,a novel method based on dual resonance Raman phenomenon is developed to precisely measure the absolute temperature rise of nanomaterial(nm WS_(2) film in this work)from 170 to 470 K.A 532 nm laser(2.33 eV photon energy)is used to conduct the Raman *** photon energy is very close to the excitonic transition energy of WS_(2) at temperatures close to room temperature.A parameter,termed resonance Raman ratio(R3)Ω=I_(A1g)/Ie_(2g) is introduced to combine the temperature effects on resonance Raman scattering for the A_(1g) and e_(2g) modes.Ω has a change of more than two orders of magnitude from 177 to 477 K,and such change is independent of film thickness and local optical *** is shown that when Ω is varied by 1%,the temperature probing sensitivity is 0.42 K and 1.16 K at low and high temperatures,*** on Ω,the in-plane thermal conductivity(k)of a∼25 nm-thick suspended WS_(2) film is measured using our energy transport state-resolved Raman(eT-Raman).k is found decreasing from 50.0 to 20.0 Wm^(−1) K^(−1) when temperature increases from 170 to 470 *** agrees with previous experimental and theoretical results and the measurement data using our *** R3 technique provides a very robust and high-sensitivity method for temperature probing of nanomaterials and will have broad applications in nanoscale thermal transport characterization,non-destructive evaluation,and manufacturing monitoring.

With a unique and large size of testing results of 1,842 samples collected from 12 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) for 14 months through from low to high prevalence of COVID-19,the sensitivity of RT-qPCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater that correspond to the communities was computed by using Probit *** study determined the number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population required to detect SARS-CoV-2RNA in wastewater at defined probabilities and provided an evidence-based framework of wastewater-based epidemiology surveillance (WBe).Input data were positive and negative test results of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples and the corresponding new COVID-19 case rates per 100,000 population served by each *** analyses determined that RT-qPCR-based SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection threshold at 50%,80%and 99%probability required a median of 8 (range:4-19),18 (9-43),and 38 (17-97) of new COVID-19 cases/100,000,***,the positive detection rate at 50%,80%and 99%probability were 0.01%,0.02%,and 0.04%averagely for new cases in the *** study improves understanding of the performance of WBe SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection using the large datasets and prolonged study *** COVID-19 burden at a community level that would result in a positive detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is critical to support WBe application as a supplementary warning/monitoring system for COVID-19 prevention and control.

In vitro Ruminal Gas Production Kinetics of Four Fodder Trees ensiled With or Without Molasses and Urea

This study investigated if the addition of urea （U）, molasses （M） or their 1：1 （v/v） mixture during ensiling increases the nutritional value of forage from four fodder trees （Prunus persica, Leucaena esculenta, Acacia farnesiana, and Prunus domestica）. Forage samples of fodder trees were collected in triplicate （three individual samples of each species） and subjected to an in vitro gas production （GP） procedure. Fermentation at 24 h （GP 24）, short-chain volatile fatty acids （SCFA）, and microbial crude protein production （MCP）, in vitro organic matter digestibility （OMD）, metabolizable energy （Me） and dry matter degradability （DMD） were estimated. Forage samples were incubated for 72 h in an incubator at 39oC and the volume of GP was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation using the reading pressure technique. The rumen fermentation profiles were highest for P. persica, which showed the highest （P〈0.0001） DMD, Me, OMD, SCFA, GP 24 and MCP. On the other hand L. esculenta had the lowest （P〈0.0001） DMD, SCFA, MCP; P. domestica had the lowest （P〈0.0001） OMD. The addition of M to silage increased （P〈0.0001） Me and OMD, as well as GP. However, the addition of U and the mixture of U and M reduced （P〈0.0001） DMD, Me, OMD, SCFA, GY 24 and MCP. These results show that P. persica has the highest nutritive value and L. esculenta the lowest for ruminants. Additionally, the addition of M to forage from fodder trees increases rumen GP and fermentation, which may improve nutrient utilization in ruminants.

The human visual system is still an important factor in military warfare;military personnel receive training on effective search strategies,and camouflage that can effectively conceal objects and personnel is a key component of a successful integrated survivability *** methods of camouflage assessment have,amongst others,used psychophysics to generate distinctiveness ***,the population from which the human observers are drawn is often not well defined,or necessarily *** this experiment we designed a new platform for testing multiple patterns based on a camouflaged object detection task,and investigate whether trained military observers perform better than *** use a two-alternative forced choice paradigm,with participants searching images of woodland for a replica military helmet displaying Olive Green,Multi Terrain Pattern,US Marine Pattern or,as a conspicuous control,UN Peacekeeper *** data show that there is no difference in detection performance between the two observer groups but that there are clear differences in the effectiveness of the different helmet colour patterns in a temperate woodland *** conclude that when tasks involve very short stimulus presentation times,task-specific training has little effect on the success of target detection and thus this paradigm is particularly suitable for robust estimates of camouflage efficacy.

Objective Positive surgical margins(PSMs)after radical prostatectomy(RP)indicate failure of surgery to completely clear *** confer an increased risk of biochemical recurrence(BCR),but how more robust outcomes are affected is *** study investigated factors associated with PSMs following RP and determined their impact on clinical outcomes(BCR,second treatment[radiotherapy and/or androgen deprivation therapy],and prostate cancer-specific mortality[PCSM]).Methods The study cohort included men diagnosed with prostate cancer(pT2-3b/N0/M0)between January 1998 and June 2016 who underwent RP from the South Australian Prostate Cancer Clinical Outcomes Collaborative *** associated with risk of PSMs were identified using Poisson *** impact of PSMs on clinical outcomes(BCR,second treatment,and PCSM)was assessed using competing risk *** Of the 2827 eligible participants,28%had PSMs—10%apical,6%bladder neck,17%posterolateral,and 5%at multiple *** follow-up was 9.6 years with 81 deaths from prostate cancer *** of PSM increased with higher pathological grade and pathological tumor stage,and greater tumour volume,but decreased with increasing surgeon volume(odds ratio[OR]:0.93;95%confidence interval[CI]:0.88-0.98,per 100 previous prostatectomies).PSMs were associated with increased risk of BCR(adjusted sub-distribution hazard ratio[sHR]2.5;95%CI 2.1-3.1)and second treatment(sHR 2.9;95%CI 2.4-3.5).Risk of BCR was increased similarly for each PSM location,but was higher for multiple margin *** found no association between PSMs and *** Our findings support previous research suggesting that PSMs are not independently associated with PCSM despite strong association with *** PSM rates remains an important objective,given the higher likelihood of secondary treatment with associated comorbidities.

Therapeutic proteins and peptides have revolutionized treatment for a number of diseases, and the expected increase in macromolecule-based therapies brings a new set of challenges for the pharmaceutics field. Due to their poor stability, large molecular weight, and poor transport properties,therapeutic proteins and peptides are predominantly limited to parenteral administration. The short serum half-lives typically require frequent injections to maintain an effective dose, and patient compliance is a growing issue as therapeutic protein treatments become more widely available. A number of studies have underscored the relationship of subcutaneous injections with patient non-adherence, estimating that over half of insulin-dependent adults intentionally skip injections. The development of oral formulations has the potential to address some issues associated with non-adherence including the interference with daily activities, embarrassment, and injection pain. Oral delivery can also help to eliminate the adverse effects and scar tissue buildup associated with repeated injections. However, there are several major challenges associated with oral delivery of proteins and peptides, such as the instability in the gastrointestinal(GI)tract, low permeability, and a narrow absorption window in the intestine. This review provides a detailed overview of the oral delivery route and associated challenges. Recent advances in formulation and drugdelivery technologies to enhance bioavailability are discussed, including the co-administration of compounds to alter conditions in the GI tract, the modification of the macromolecule physicochemical properties, and the use of improved targeted and controlled release carriers.

Given a compact and regular Hausdorff measure space (X, μ), with μ a Radon measure, it is known that the generalised space M(X) of all the positive Radon measures on X is isomorphic to the space of essentially bounded functions L∞(X, μ) on X. We confirm that the commutative von Neumann algebras M⊂B(H), with H=L2(X, μ), are unitary equivariant to the maximal ideals of the commutative algebra C(X). Subsequenly, we use the measure groupoid to formulate the algebraic and topological structures of the commutative algebra C(X) following its action on M(X) and define its representation and ergodic dynamical system on the commutative von Neumann algebras of M of B(H) .
