Enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ce-doped ZnO nanopowders synthesized by combustion method

Facile and fast combustion method was used to synthesize Zn O and Ce-doped Zn O（CZO） nanocrystalline powders photocatalysts with different cerium concentrations（0.5 wt.%–10.0 wt.%） followed by calcination at 700 oC for 3 h. The prepared samples were characterized by a variety of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction（XRD）, scanning electron microscopy（SEM） combined with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction（EDX）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, UV-visible spectroscopy, BET surface area analyser and photoluminescence spectroscopy（PL）, to study the crystal structure, surface morphology, chemical composition and optical properties. It was observed from XRD results that synthesized powders had hexagonal wurtzite structure with the smallest crystallite size about 13 nm. Absorption spectra showed that cerium doping enhanced the light absorption properties towards the visible light region. Photoluminescence spectra for Ce-doped Zn O samples exhibited relatively weak near band edge（nBE） emission peaks as compared to that of pristine Zn O. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B（Rh B） under UV light and visible light（λ≥420 nm） irradiation. The textile mill effluent containing organic matters was also treated under sunlight using photocatalysis and the reduction in the chemical oxygen demand（COD） of the treated effluent revealed a complete destruction of the organic molecules along with colour removal. The results showed that the CZO photocatalyst doped with 3.0 wt.% cerium exhibited four times enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure Zn O. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be attributed to extended visible light absorption and inhibition of the electron-hole pair＇s recombination.

Mechanical properties of steel, glass, and hybrid fiber reinforced reactive powder concrete

This study examines the properties of fiber-reinforced reactive powder concrete (FR-RPC). Steel fibers, glass fibers, and steel-glass hybrid fibers were used to prepare the FR-RPC. The non-fibrous reactive powder concrete (nF-RPC) was prepared as a reference mix. The proportion of fibers by volume for all FR-RPC mixes was 1.5%. Steel fibers of 13 mm length and 0.2 mm diameter were used to prepare the steel fiber-reinforced RPC (SFR-RPC). glass fibers of 13 mm length and 1.3 mm diameter were used to prepare the glass fiber-reinforced RPC (gFR-RPC). The hybrid fiber-reinforced RPC (HFR-RPC) was prepared by mixing 0.9% steel fibers and 0.6% glass fibers. Compressive strength, axial load-axial deformation behavior, modulus of elasticity, indirect tensile strength, and shear strength of the RPC mixes were investigated. The results showed that SFR-RPC achieved higher compressive strength, indirect tensile strength and shear strength than nF-RPC, gFR-RPC, and HFR-RPC. Although the compressive strengths of gFR-RPC and HFR-RPC were slightly lower than the compressive strength of nF-RPC, the shear strengths of gFR-RPC and HFR-RPC were higher than that of nF-RPC.

Modeling and measuring glucose diffusion and consumption by colorectal cancer spheroids in hanging drops using integrated biosensors

As 3D in vitro tissue models become more pervasive,their built-in nutrient,metabolite,compound,and waste gradients increase biological relevance at the cost of analysis *** these gradients and the resulting metabolic heterogeneity requires invasive and time-consuming *** alternative is using electrochemical biosensors and measuring concentrations around the tissue model to obtain size-dependent metabolism *** our hanging-dropintegrated enzymatic glucose biosensors,we conducted current measurements within hanging-drop compartments hosting spheroids formed from the human colorectal carcinoma cell line *** developed a physics-based mathematical model of analyte consumption and transport,considering(1)diffusion and enzymatic conversion of glucose to form hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))by the glucose-oxidase-based hydrogel functionalization of our biosensors at the microscale;(2)H_(2)O_(2)oxidation at the electrode surface,leading to amperometric H_(2)O_(2)readout;(3)glucose diffusion and glucose consumption by cancer cells in a spherical tissue model at the microscale;(4)glucose and H_(2)O_(2)transport in our hangingdrop compartments at the macroscale;and(5)solvent evaporation,leading to glucose and H_(2)O_(2)*** model relates the measured currents to the glucose concentrations generating the *** low limit of detection of our biosensors(0.4±0.1μM),combined with our current-fitting method,enabled us to reveal glucose dynamics within our *** measuring glucose dynamics in hanging-drop compartments populated by cancer spheroids of various sizes,we could infer glucose distributions within the spheroid,which will help translate in vitro 3D tissue model results to in vivo.

The Characterization of Sputtered Zr-ge-n Thin Films as Diffusion Barriers Between Copper and Silicon

The main purpose of the present micro-structural analysis by transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)was to investigate whether amorphous Zr-ge-n films are a potential candidate as a diffusion barrier for Cu wiring used in Si *** Zr-ge-n films were prepared by a radio frequency(RF)reactive magnetron sputter-deposition technique using n2 and Ar mixed gas,and the film structure was found to be sensitive to the gas flow ratio of n2 *** during *** Zr-ge-n films were obtained when the n2/(Ar+n2)ratio was smaller than 0.2 and amorphous-like Zr-ge-n films were obtained when the ratio was larger than *** barrier test was performed by annealing the Cu/Zr-ge-n/Si film stack under Ar *** deposited Zr-ge-n(C)films remained amorphous even after high temperature *** Cu diffusion profile in the film was assessed by the Auger electron spectroscopy(AES).The results indicate that Cu diffusion was minimal in amorphous Zr-ge-n(C)films even at high annealing temperatures of 800℃.

Mathematical Modeling of Heat Transfer Processes of Coal Waste Combustion in a Chamber of Automated Energy generating Complex

The automated energy generating complex allows obtaining heat energy from waste coal-water slurry fuel （WCF） that is a mixture of fine coal particles from coal enrichment wastes with water. The mixture is blown into the swirl chamber under the pressure through the special sprayers. The received heat energy is used in different ways. One of the important issues is to estimate the heat losses through the walls of this chamber. In this paper we solved the boundary problem of mathematical physics to estimate the temperature fields in the walls of the swirl chamber. The obtained solution allows us to estimate the heat losses through the waUs of the swid chamber. The task of the mathematical physics has been solved by a numerical finite-difference method. The method for solving this prob- lem can be used in the calculation of temperature fields and evaluation of heat losses in other thermal power units.
