We studied the outcome in.late childhood of children.en.ered in.o the trial to establish whether there were lon.- term sequelae attributable to either mode of ven.ilation. Methods: Outpatien. assessmen. of n.urological outcome, cogn.tive fun.tion. an. disability was don. by a paediatrician.an. a psychologist usin. stan.ardised tests. 133 of 205 survivors from the origin.l trial were assessed at 9- 15 years of age. Of the origin.l pairs ran.omly assign.d to each ven.ilation.mode, the results from 65 complete pairs were available. The primary outcome was death or severe disability. Fin.in.s: Primary outcome was equally distributed between.groups (odds ratio for the Cn.P group 1.0; 95% CI 0.41- 2.41). A n.w method for the syn.hesis of azo Schiff an.base ligan. in.which the azo an. azomethin. groups are coordin.tion.sites was developed through a Schiff base precursor. The precursor, n.4-methoxyben.yliden.-3-hydroxyphen.lamin. （SB） derived from 3-amin.phen.l was regioselectively coupled with a diazon.um ion.para to the hydroxyl group of the amin. compon.n. of the Schiff base. The para selectivity was con.rolled by the directin. effect of the hydroxyl group. The ligan. an. its n.ckel（Ⅱ） complex were characterized by elemen.al an.lyses, IR an. UV-Vis spectroscopy.
