We in.estigate the effect of the ballistic mechan.sm on.the phase diagram usin. a square surface. While usin. this mechan.sm when.ver an.O2 molecule hits a ran.omly vacan. selected site, the molecule breaks up in.o atomic form an. then.executes a ballistic flight. The paths of the two oxygen.atoms are taken.exactly to be opposite to each other, ***-parallel, an. the ran.es of the atoms are taken.to be equal, *** may fly up to 1 or 1.414 or 2 of the atomic spacin. from the site of impact. Four cases have been.studied on.the basis of the ran.e of hot atoms. The ran.e of the hot oxygen.atoms executin. a ballistic flight might be up to the first n.arest n.ighbourhood (1 atomic spacin. from the site of impact), the secon. n.arest n.ighbourhood (1.414 atomic spacin. from the site of impact), the third n.arest n.ighbourhood (2 atomic spacin. from the site of impact), kn.wn.as cases a, b, an. c, respectively, while for case d the ran.e of the oxygen.atoms executin. the ballistic flight might be up to 1 atomic spacin. or 1.414 atomic spacin. or 2 atomic spacin. from the site of impact. As soon.as the CO partial pressure departs from zero, the production.of CO2 is observed, which clearly verifies the experimen.al observation.
