A study was carried out to determine the relative susceptibility of six maize(Zea mays L.) varieties to maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky(Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It was conducted at Department of Crop Protection Laboratory,University of Ilorin, Nigeria at ambient temperature of 28±2℃ and 68%±3% relative humidity. Samples of the varieties were infestedwith five pairs of S. zeamais adults in their respective containers arranged in completely randomized design with three *** were collected on moisture content, adult mortality, adult emergence, grain loss and grain damage. The index of susceptibilityand means of damage parameters were used to determine susceptibility of the maize varieties. The results showed that 2008 SYNEE W DT STR was highly resistant and 2004 TZE-W POP STR C4 was moderately resistant, while 2004 TZE-Y-POP STR C4,99 TZEE-Y-STR, EV99 QPM and TZE-Y-POP DT STR QPM C_0S1 were susceptible. Under artificial infestation, the weevils hadsignificantly longer survival period in the susceptible varieties than those in the resistant genotype. It could be concluded that thesusceptible varieties already released to farmers should be protected from maize weevil damage.

Steel dome structures,with their striking structural forms,take a place among the impressive and aesthetic load bearing systems featuring large internal spaces without internal *** this paper,the seismic design optimization of spatial steel dome structures is achieved through three recent metaheuristic algorithms that are water strider(WS),grey wolf(GW),and brain storm optimization(BSO).The structural elements of the domes are treated as design variables collected in member *** structural stress and stability limitations are enforced by ASD-AISC ***,the displacement restrictions are considered in design *** metaheuristic algorithms are encoded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000 for gathering structural reactions through open application programming interface(OAPI).The optimum spatial steel dome designs achieved by proposed WS,GW,and BSO algorithms are compared with respect to solution accuracy,convergence rates,and reliability,utilizing three real-size design examples for considering both the previously reported optimum design results obtained by classical metaheuristic algorithms and a gradient descent-based hyperband optimization(HBO)algorithm.

The intrinsic viscosity [η], Huggins constant （Ku）, [η]0, α^3 and flow activation energy values of nylon 6 have been measured in wateηm-cresol （0/100-20/80） systems at different temperatures （20-60℃）. It has been found that the intrinsic viscosity, [η]0 and α^3 increase with the increase in water contents in m-cresol up to 15% and then decrease. They increase with the increase in temperature irrespective of solvent composition. It has been noted that the percent increase of α^3 is the highest at 60℃ and the lowest at 20℃ for a particular solvent system. The intrinsic viscosity data obey Arrhenius equation over the considered conditions. The activation energy and the KH values decrease very sharply with the addition of water, giving a minimum value at 15% of water and then increase slowly. The variation of all the parameters has been explained in terms of variation in thermodynamic quality of solvent with the addition of water to m-cresol and change in temperature, resulting in the change of conformational and orientational properties of polymer molecules. This change of solvent quality also results in variation of selective sorption of solvent over the polymer, such as hydrogen bonding, etc.

The CO-NO reaction on a catalytic surface is studied by using Langmuir-Hinshclwood thermal mechanism with Monte Carlo computer simulation. In this model, a novel concept of CO CO repulsion is introduced, which has experimental evidence due to the formation of dipoles when these molecules are chemisorbed on the surface. The system is investigated by applying two approaches of NO dissociation. In the first ***, NO always decomposes into N and O before adsorption on the surface, In the second case, NO adsorbs on the surface molecularly and then dissociates into N and O if a vacancy is present in its adjacent neighbourhood. The steady state reactive window （i.e. the continuous production of CO2 and N2） is obtained only with the diffusion of N-atoms on the surface, which extends with CO-CO repulsion in the first, case. Itowever, in the second case, reactive window is obtained with CO-CO repulsion alone, The reactive window width in this case is reasonably large. The first-order phase transition is eliminated in both the cases with CO-CO repulsion.

Miscibility between PS and PSAN Affected by Solvent and Temperature of the System

The influence of solvent on the miscibility of polystyrene（PS） and poly（styrene-co-acrylonitrile）（PSAN） blends has been investigated viscometrically. The miscibility of different PS/PSAN blend（30/70, 50/50 and 70/30） compositions in acetone and benzene at 20, 30, and 40 °C was investigated on the basis of the sign of Chee（ΔB and ）, and Sun’s（α） criteria. The values of these parameters were evaluated from the analyses of reduced viscosity data of binary（solvent/polymer） and ternary（solvent/polymer1/polymer2） polymer systems. These investigations indicated partial miscibility for both the blend systems. However, PS/PSAN/acetone blend system showed somewhat higher partial miscibility than the PS/PSAN/Benzene blend system highlighting the impact of solvent over the polymer-polymer interactions and hence their miscibility. The results obtained through viscometry were also corroborated by the refractive index and density results for the blends under study. The effect of temperature on miscibility in both the cases was almost negligible.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a congestive hepatopathy caused by blockage of hepatic veins. This syndrome occurs in 1/100 000 in the general population. Hypercoagulable state could be identified in 75% of the patients; more than one etiologic factor may play a role in 25% of the patients. Primary myeloproliferative diseases are the leading cause of the disease. Two of the hepatic veins must be blocked for clinically evident disease. Liver congestion and hypoxic damage of hepatocytes eventually result in predominantly centrilobular fibrosis. Doppler ultrasonography of the liver should be the initial diagnostic procedure. Hepatic venography is the reference procedure if required. Additionally liver biopsy may be helpful for differential diagnosis. The prognosis of the chronic form is acceptable compared to other chronic liver diseases.

Deformation modulus of rock mass is one of the input parameters to most rock engineering designs and *** field tests for determination of deformation modulus are cumbersome,expensive and *** has prompted the development of various regression equations to estimate deformation modulus from results of rock mass classifications,with rock mass rating(RMR)being one of the frequently used *** regression equations are of different types ranging from linear to nonlinear functions like power and *** method has recently been developed to incorporate regression equations into a Bayesian framework to provide better estimates of geotechnical *** question of whether Bayesian method improves the estimation of geotechnical properties in all circumstances remains ***,a comparative study was conducted to assess the performances of regression and Bayesian methods when they are used to characterize deformation modulus from the same set of RMR data obtained from two project *** study also investigated the performance of different types of regression equations in estimation of the deformation ***,probability distributions and prediction indicators were used to assess the performances of regression and Bayesian methods and different types of regression *** was found that power and exponential types of regression equations provide a better estimate than linear regression *** addition,it was discovered that the ability of the Bayesian method to provide better estimates of deformation modulus than regression method depends on the quality and quantity of input data as well as the type of the regression equation.

Inorganic scale deposits are a major water-related problem encountered in producing oil and gas wells. The harshness of scale deposits is dependent on the field operating conditions. Scale deposits can vary from mild scaling tendencies to extreme. In general, the scale deposit will cause a reduction in formation pores, declining productivity and eventually blockage of the wellbore and hence unexpected downtime if it is allowed to persevere. To overcome this, the productivity of an oil and gas well is ensured by handling scale deposits via removal or prevention methods. Scale prevention is the best and cost-e ective method for handling scale deposits that ensures production continuity. Inhibition through 'threshold' scale inhibitor treatment is the most common method that is proven to prevent or reduce likely deposits. This paper examines the art of synthetic scale inhibitors, in particular, threshold scale inhibitors in oil and gas production. It discusses the chemistry of those inhibitors, inhibition mechanisms, treatment methods and key properties for their applications. It also highlights the chemistry of the synthetic routes often used to produce them in the laboratory and/or industry. Finally, it highlights the environmental concerns for the applicability of threshold scale inhibitors.

This article described antimicrobial property and structure analysis of 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid isolated from the crude extract of Citrus microcarpa. Presently, there was no report on compound from C. microcarpa that possessed antimicrobial property against fish pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, in this study, the bioactive principle in C. microcarpa extract was isolated using thin layer chromatography. It＇s structure was elucidated based on nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR） spectroscopic data, such as proton NMR （1HNMR）, correlation spectroscopy, carbon 13 NMR, and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation data. This study showed that the bioactive compound isolated from C. microcarpa was 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid monohydrate. The minimum inhibitory concentration （MIC） values of crude C. microcarpa extract and its bioactive component, 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid as well as commercially available synthetic 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, were determined against 18 isolates of Edwardsiella tarda and 7 bacterial reference strains, namely, Escherichia coli （ATCC 25922）, Citrobacter freundii （ATCC 8090）, Aeromonas hydrophila （ATCC 49140）, Pseudomonas aeruginosa （ATCC 35032）, Streptococcus agalatiae （ATCC 13813）, E. tarda （ATCC 15947）, and Yersinia enterocolitica （ATCC 23715）, using two-fold microdilution method. The MIC values for both the natural 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid and the synthetic one were ranging from 15.6 to 62.5 mg mL-1, whereas that of the crude extract was ranging from 7.8 to 31.3 mg mL-1. These findings showed that both the crude extract and its bioactive component might have potential as antimicrobial agent for aquaculture use.

An indexing method for rapid evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of infi lled RC frame buildings in Jordan is proposed. The method aims at identifying low and medium rise residential buildings as safe or in need of further detailed evaluation. Following a rapid visual screening, the building is assigned a Basic Capacity Index(BCI); fi ve performance modifi ers are identifi ed and multiplied by the BCI to arrive at the Capacity Index(CI) of the building. A Capacity Index lower than a limit CI value indicates that the screened building could experience moderate earthquake damage whereas a higher value implies that minor damage, if any, would take place. To establish the basic evaluation parameters; forty RC frame buildings were selected, designed and analyzed using static nonlinear analysis and incorporating the effect of infi ll walls. Effects of seismicity, local site conditions, horizontal irregularities(setbacks and re-entrant corners), vertical irregularities(soft story at ground fl oor level) and overhangs on the seismic performance of local buildings were examined. Assessment forms were designed and used to evaluate and rank 112 sample buildings. About 40% of the surveyed buildings were found to be in need of detailed evaluation to better defi ne their seismic vulnerabilities.
