Role of a probiotic (Saccharomyces boulardii) in management and prevention of diarrhoea

AIM： To assess the efficacy and safety of Saccharomyces boulardii （S. boulardii） in acute watery diarrhoea and its role in reducing the frequency of episodes of diarrhoea in subsequent two months. METHODS： Children from 2 mo to 12 years of age, with acute diarrhoea were selected according to inclusion criteria and randomised in S. boulardii group （treated with ORS, nutritional support and S. boulardii, 250 mg bid） and in control group （treated with ORS and nutritional support only）. Active treatment phase was 5 d and each child was followed for two months afterwards. Frequency and consistency of stools as well as safety of drug was assessed on every visit. A comparison of two groups was done in terms of number of diarrhoeal episode in subsequent two months. RESULTS： There were fifty patients in each group. Baseline characteristics such as mean age and the average frequency of stools were comparable in S. boulardii and control group at the time of inclusion in the trial. By d 3 it reduced to 2.7 and 4.2 stools per d respectively and by d 6 it reduced to 1.6 （5. boulardii Group） and 3.3 （control group）. The duration of diarrhoea was 3.6 d in S. boulardii group whereas it was 4.8 d in control group （P = 0.001）. In the following two months, S. boulardii group had a significantly lower frequency of 0.54 episodes as compared to 1.08 episodes in control group. The drug was well accepted and tolerated. There were no reports of the side effects during treatment period CONCLUSION： S. boulardii significantly reduces the frequency and duration of acute diarrhoea. The consistency of stool also improves. The drug is well-tolerated.

Optoelectronic Properties, Elastic Moduli and Thermoelectricity of SrAlGa： An Ab Initio Study

Half-Heusler compounds are an impressive class of materials with a huge potential for different applications such as in future energy, especially in the fields of thermoelectrics and solar cells. We present ab fnitio total energy calculations within the modified Becke-Johnson generalized gradient approximation （mBJ-GGA） to obtain the physical properties of SrAlGa compounds. The structural, elastic, acoustic, electronic, chemical bonding, optical, and thermoelectric properties are calculated and compared with the available calculation data. The SrAlGa is found to be a small-band-gap （0.125-0.175 eV） material, suitable for thermoelectric applications with a relatively high Seebeck coefficient. Also, SrAIGa has the potential in the optoelectronic applications due to high optical conductivity and reflectivity in the infrared and visible region of electromagnetic spectra.

Predicting chemical speciation of metals in soil using Visual Minteq

From soil contamination and risk assessment perspectives,it is imperative to understand the ecological processes occurring in *** soil processes greatly affect chemical speciation of potentially toxic metals(PTMs),and thus also influence their biogeochemical *** current study analyzed chemical speciation of eight PTMs(Cd,Cr,Fe,Cu,Mn,Ni,Zn,and Pb)in upper and lower soil layers for 15 agronomic fields of Vehari-Pakistan using Visual Minteq *** divalent forms of most PTMs(PTM^(2+))generally predominated in both soil layers(79.9%overall occurrence).However,chromium revealed a different pattern of chemical speciation(95.8%as CrOH^(+))compared to other *** mean percentage of all the PTMs2+was slightly higher for the lower soil layer(81.3%)than in the upper layer(78.4%),the trend being same for all the PTMs,except *** higher PTMs^(2+)percentage in lower soil layers than upper layers was due to lower content of organic matter and other anions such as Cl^(−)and HCO_(3)_(−).The mean percentage ages of all the PTMs^(2+)was similar among all the 15 agronomic fields,which was confirmed by strong Pearson correlation values(R^(2)>0.95).The PCA graph grouped all the agronomic fields and PTM^(2+) closely,except Cr^(2+) and Cu^(2+).This grouping confirmed the similar chemical speciation of PTMs,except Cu and Cr in studied fields.

An Automated System to Predict Popular Cybersecurity News Using Document Embeddings

The substantial competition among the news industries puts editors under the pressure of posting news articleswhich are likely to gain more user attention. Anticipating the popularity of news articles can help the editorial teamsin making decisions about posting a news article. Article similarity extracted from the articles posted within a smallperiod of time is found to be a useful feature in existing popularity prediction approaches. This work proposesa new approach to estimate the popularity of news articles by adding semantics in the article similarity basedapproach of popularity estimation. A semantically enriched model is proposed which estimates news popularity bymeasuring cosine similarity between document embeddings of the news articles. Word2vec model has been used togenerate distributed representations of the news content. In this work, we define popularity as the number of timesa news article is posted on different websites. We collect data from different websites that post news concerning thedomain of cybersecurity and estimate the popularity of cybersecurity news. The proposed approach is comparedwith different models and it is shown that it outperforms the other models.

Optoelectronic Response of GeZn_(2)O_(4) through the Modified Becke-Johnson Potential

A first-principles technique capable of describing the nearly excited states of semiconductors and insulators,namely the modified Becke–Johnson(mBJ)potential approximation,is used to investigate the electronic band structure and optical properties of spinel oxides:GeZn_(2)O_(4).The predicted band gaps using the mBJ approximation are significantly more accurate than the proposed previous theoretical work using the common LDA and *** gap dependent optical parameters,like the dielectric constant,index of refraction,reflectivity and optical conductivity are calculated and *** results from the dielectric constant shows that the numerical value of the static dielectric,after dropping constantly,becomes less than zero and the material exhibits metallic *** refractive index also drops below unity for photons higher than 18 eV,which indicates that the velocities of incident photons are greater than the velocity of ***,these phenomena can be explained by the fact that a signal must be transmitted as a wave packet rather than a monochromatic *** comprehensive theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties predicts that these materials can effectively be used in optical devices.

Comparison of Dartos flap and spongioplasty in Snodgrass urethroplasty in distal penile hypospadias

Background Hypospadias surgery has been continuously evolving,although there is no single technique which can be said to be perfect and suitable for all types of *** incised plate(TIP)urethroplasty(Snodgrass procedure)is presently the most common surgical procedure performed for distal penile hypospadias(DPH).The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of TIP urethroplasty using Dartos flap(DF)and spongioplasty as second layer in *** A total of 30 patients of DPH were repaired using TIP urethroplasty with DF or spongioplasty as second layer from January 2017 to June *** of 30 patients,TIP with DF was done in 15 patients(group A)and TIP with spongioplasty was done in the remaining 15 patients(group B).Preoperative mean age and weight were comparable in both *** complications,namely,postoperative edema,residual chordee,urethrocutaneous fistula(UCF),meatal stenosis and final cosmesis,were *** In both groups,complications included postoperative edema(Gp A-1Gp B-1),residual chordee(Gp A-1,Gp B-1),UCF(Gp A-3,Gp B-4),meatal stenosis(Gp A-1,Gp B-5)and poor cosmesis(Gp A-3,Gp B-4).Wound infection was managed with appropriate antibiotics,and meatal stenosis responded to calibration in five *** it seems that DF has a better outcome clinically,the difference between the two techniques was statistically not *** DF as an additional cover to TIP is associated with an acceptable complication and has good cosmesis compared with spongioplasty;however,the difference is not statistically significant.

A study on p53 gene alterations in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and their correlation to common dietary risk factors among population of the Kashmir valley

AIM： To systematically examine the extent of correlation of risk factors, such as age, consumed dietary habit and familial predisposition with somatic Tp53 molecular lesion causal to elevate carcinogenesis severity of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma （ESCC） among the Kashmiri population of Northern India. METHODS： All cases （n = 51） and controls （n = 150） were permanent residents of the Kashmir valley. Genetic alterations were determined in exons 5-8 of Tp53 tumor suppressor gene among 45 ESCC cases histologically confirmed by PCR-SSCP analysis. Data for individual cancer cases （n = 45） and inpatient controls （n = 150） with non-cancer disease included information on family history of cancer, thirty prevailing common dietary risk factors along with patient＇s age group. Correlation of genetic lesion in p53 exons to animistic data from these parameters was generated by Chi-square test to all 45 histologically confirmed ESCC cases along with healthy controls.RESULTS： Thirty-five of 45 （77.8%） histologically characterized tumor samples had analogous somatic mutation as opposed to 1 of 45 normal sample obtained from adjacent region from the same patient showed gerrnline mutation. The SSCP analysis demonstrated that most common p53 gene alterations were found in exon 6 （77.7%）, that did not correlate with the age of the individual and clinicopathological parameters but showed significant concordance （P 〈 0.05） with familial history of cancer （CD = 58）, suggesting germline predisposition at an unknown locus, and dietary habit of consuming locally grown Brassica vegetable ＂Hakh＂（CD = 19.5）, red chillies （CD = 20.2）, hot salty soda tea （CD = 2.37） and local baked bread （CD = 1.1）. CONCLUSION： Our study suggests that somatic chromosomal mutations, especially in exon 6 of Tp53 gene, among esophageal cancer patients of an ethnically homogenous population of Kashmir valley are closely related to continued exposure to various common dietary risk factors, especially hot sa

Investigations of the half-metallic behavior and the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of half-Heusler CoMnTe and RuMnTe compounds: A first-principles study

First-principles spin-polarized density functional theory （DFT） investigations of the structural, electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamics characteristics of the half-Heusler, CoMnTe and RuMnTe compounds are carried out. Calculations are accomplished within a state of the art full-potential （FP） linearized （L） augmented plane wave plus a local orbital （APW ＋ lo） computational approach framed within DFT. The generalized gradient approximation （GGA） parameterized by Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof （PBE） is implemented as an exchange correlation functional as a part of the total energy calculation. From the analysis of the calculated electronic band structure as well as the density of states for both compounds, a strong hybridization between d states of the higher valent transition metal （TM） atoms （Co, Ru） and lower valent TM atoms of （Mn） is observed. Furthermore, total and partial density of states （PDOS） of the ground state and the results of spin magnetic moments reveal that these compounds are both stable and ideal half-metallic ferromagnetic. The effects of the unit cell volume on the magnetic properties and half-metaliicity are crucial. It is worth noting that our computed results of the total spin magnetic moments, for CoMnTe equal to 4 ~tB and 3 p-B per unit cell for RuMnTe, nicely follow the rule μ2tot = Zt - 18. Using the quasi-harmonic Debye model, which considers the phononic effects, the effecs of pressure P and temperature T on the lattice parameter, bulk modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, Debye temperature, and heat capacity for these compounds are investigated for the first time.

Comparative study on nutrient composition and antioxidant capacity of potato based on geographical and climatic factors
