The effect of ma.erna. thyroxine injection on growth, surviva. a.d development of the digestive system of Nile tila.ia. Oreochromis niloticus, la.va.

The present study dea.s with the effect of exogenous trea.ment of O. niloticus fema.es with L-thyroxine (T4) on the development of the digestive system during la.va. rea.ing, a.d its subsequent effect on la.va. growth a.d surviva.. The development of the digestive tra.t a.d a.cessory gla.ds wa. investiga.ed histologica.ly a.d histochemica.ly in the developing O. niloticus la.va., from control a.d T4-trea.ed spa.ners. During yolk-sa. a.sorption, the digestive system of the fish underwent further differentia.ion a.d the rudimenta.y a.imenta.y ca.a. beca.e segmented into four different histologica. regions: the buccopha.ynx, oesopha.us, stoma.h a.d intestine. The injection of fema.es O. niloticus with thyroxine (1 or 10 μg T4/g BW) grea.ly enha.ced the development of the digestive tra.t a.d a.cessory gla.ds of la.va. a. indica.ed by the qua.tita.ive a.d qua.ita.ive cha.ges of the mucus composition from predomina.tly neutra. to a.mixture of neutra. a.d a.id mucosubsta.ces, or a.id mucosubsta.ces occurred during the rea.ing period for the la.va. produced from T4-trea.ed fema.es. This ma. be due to the direct effect of exogenous thyroxine, which might ha.e been tra.sferred from ma.erna. circula.ion into the oocytes a.d la.va., on the synthesis of proteins, which increa.ed with la.va. development. Thus, thyroxine directly or indirectly improved O. niloticus la.va. growth, since a.ma.ked increa.e in both, length a.d weight of la.va. occurred during the experimenta. period. In a.dition, la.va. from trea.ed fema.es a.so ga.e a.significa.tly higher surviva. ra.e tha. tha. of control. It could be concluded tha. exogenous T4 in ma.erna. circula.ion might ha.e been tra.sferred into oocytes a.d la.va.. The tra.sferred thyroid hormone a.pea.s to pla. some role in the ea.ly development of la.va. a.d ma. confer a.distinct a.va.ta.e for the growth of the offspring of the Nile tila.ia. O. niloticus.

Immunocytochemica. identifica.ion of the different cell types in the pituita.y gla.d of Ba.rus ba.a. wa. performed using a.tisera.a.a.nst ma.ma.ia. (huma. a.d ra.) a.d piscine hormones. The a.enohypophysis wa. composed of rostra. pa.s dista.is (RPD), proxima. pa.s dista.is (PPD) a.d pa.s intermedia.(PI). Prola.tin a.d a.renocorticotrophic cells were loca.ed in the rostra. pa.s dista.is of the pituita.y. Gona.otrophic a.d growth hormone cells were distributed in the proxima. pa.s dista.is, but gona.otrophic cells a.pea. a.so a. the border of the pa.s intermedia. Soma.ola.tin cells, a. well a. a.pha.mela.otrophic cells were loca.ed in the pa.s intermedia.of B. ba.a. pitui-ta.y. The prola.tin (PRL) cells were distributed in the RPD sta.ned with ora.ge G a.d showed strong immunorea.tivity with a.tiserum to chum sa.mon. The a.renocorticotrophic (a.TH) cells were lea. hema.toxylin-positive (PbH+) a.d showed strong im- mu-norea.tivity with a.ti-huma. a.TH;these cells bor-dered the neurohypophysis a.d grouped in islets be-tween PRL cells in the RPD. Growth hormone (GH) cells were densely distributed with the gona.otrophic (GTH) cells in the PPD. They were ora.ge G positive a.d rea.ted with a.tiserum to chum sa.mon. GTH cells were loca.ed in the centra. a.ea.of the PPD a.d in the externa. border of the PI. These cells were a.cya. Blue a.d Pa. positive, a.d immunosta.ned with a.ti-chum sa.mon GTH Iβ a.d a.ti-chum sa.mon GTH IIβ. In a.dition, a.tiserum to ra. thyrotropin stimula.ing hormone β (TSHβ) rea.ted positively to the GTH cells. These results suggest tha. GTH I, GTH II a.d TSH a.e synthesized in the sa.e cells in the pituita.y of B. ba.a.. The PI wa. composed ma.nly of PbH+ cells a.d a.Pa.+ cell a.ja.ent to the neurohypophysis. The Pa.+ cells from the PI bound specifica.ly to a.ti-chum soma.ola.tin. a.ti-a.pha. mela.in stimula.ing hormone (MSH) sta.ned only the PbH+ (a.pha.mela.otrophic) cells of the PI.

Iron ore pellets a.e the ma.n feedstock in ironma.ing processes. While extensive resea.ch ha. a.dressed numerica. modeling of the iron ore pellet indura.ion process, little effort ha. been ma.e to describe the intrica.e thermochemica. processes occurring within the rea.tor sta.ting from the pellet a.d pa.ticula.ly a. the intra.pa.ticle sca.e. In this rega.d, discrete-continuous methods like CFD-DEM ca. genera.e more rea.istic, irregula. pa.ticle a.semblies, which lea.s to significa.tly more a.cura.e predictions of voida.e va.ia.ion, wa.l effects, tempera.ure distribution, a.d a.socia.ed ma.s tra.sfer phenomena. This study presents a.numerica. model ba.ed on computa.iona. fluid dyna.ics (CFD) coupled with the discrete element method (DEM) to simula.e the therma. indura.ion process of iron ore pellets. The presented model solving hea., ma.s, a.d momentum conserva.ion equa.ions for both continuous a.d discrete pha.es, provides deta.led informa.ion on the thermochemica. a.pects of the process.
