Eutectic mixture promoted CO_2 sorption on MgO-TiO_2 composite at elevated temperature

The development of carbon dioxide(CO_2) sorbents that can operate at elevated temperatures is significant for the advancement of pre-combustion capture ***, promoter-based systems composed of alkali/alkaline earth metal nitrates and/or carbonates have been considered as next-generation solid sorbents due to their improved CO_2 uptake and kinetics. However, obtaining stable MgO sorbents against temperature swing regeneration still remained challenging. Herein, we report MgO-TiO_2 solid sorbents promoted by eutectic mixture(KNO_3 and LiNO_3) for elevated temperature CO_2 sorption. The developed sorbents show improved CO_2 sorption capacity, which may be attributed to the alternative CO_2 sorption pathway provided by the ionization of highly dispersed MgO in the eutectic mixture. The MgO-TiO_2 framework was also shown to assist in retaining the MgO configuration by constraining its interaction with CO_2. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that constructing composite structures is essential to improve the CO_2 sorption characteristics,mainly recyclability, at elevated temperatures. The developed promoter integrated sorbents showed exceptionally high CO_2 sorption capacity of > 30 wt.% at an elevated temperature(300°C) with pronounced stability under temperature swing operation.

The production of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) has increased tremendously during recent years due to their antibacterial and physicochemical properties. As a consequence, these particles are released inevitably into the environment, with soil being the main sink of disposal. Soil interactions have an effect on AgNP mobility, transport and bioavailability. To understand AgNP adsorption processes, lab-controlled kinetic studies were *** tests performed with five different Mediterranean agricultural soils showed that cation exchange capacity and electrical conductivity are the main parameters controlling the adsorption processes. The adsorption kinetics of different sized(40, 75, 100 and 200 nm)and coated(citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethyleneglycol(PEG)) AgNPs indicated that these nanoparticle properties have also an effect on the adsorption *** assess the mobility and bioavailability of AgNPs and to determine if their form is maintained during adsorption/desorption processes, loaded soils were submitted to leaching tests three weeks after batch adsorption studies. The DIN 38414-S4 extraction method indicated that AgNPs were strongly retained on soils, and single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry confirmed that silver particles maintained their nanoform, except for 100 nm PEG-AgNPs and 40 nm citrate-coated AgNPs. The DTPA(diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) leaching test was more effective in extracting silver,but there was no presence of AgNPs in almost all of these leachates.

New Linkage with Linear Actuator for Tracking PV Systems with Large Angular Stroke

This paper focuses on the development of an optimized photovoltaic tracking system involving low-cost, relative simple mechanisms, with linear actuators able to insure strokes comparable with those resulted when using gear rotary actuators. Starting with a rhombus linkage, with a linear actuator on the diagonal used for the elevation motion till 90°, a new performance solution is generated. This new linkage allows large angular strokes by using an asymmetric rhombus and an eccentrically positioned linear actuator. The paper can be divided in three main parts. Firstly the kinematical modeling of the new linkage is addressed, which permits the establishing of the linkage dimensions according to two adjustable parameters （k2, k5）. Using the resulted correlations, in the second part the linkage synthesis algorithm is developed; the steps followed in this algorithm are presented in a numerical application considering a tracked PV platform, where the azimuthal vertical movement is obtained with the new proposed rhomboidal linkage. In the last part of the paper an analysis is done with the aim of determining the PV platform tracking efficiency （which represents the ratio between the received and the available beam solar energy） using the new linkage, in the meteorological conditions of Brasov, romania implementation site.

Purification of bioethanol fermentation broth using hydrophilic PVA crosslinked PVDF-GO/TiO_(2) membrane

The presence of impurities in the bioethanol fermentation broth should be removed to mitigate any possible ineffective refining processes as well as to enhance bioethanol production. In this study, a prefiltration process was carried out for separating fermentation yeast cells and residual substrates using a microfiltration membrane. Hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride-graphene oxide/titanium dioxide(PVDF-GO/TiO_(2)) membrane with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) surface-coating modification was fabricated and characterized. Membrane modification attempts have succeeded in increasing the hydrophilicity as indicated by contact angle decline from 72.10° to 34.83° and affinity towards water leading to higher water permeability. The performance evaluation showed that 90.77% of unwanted by-products(yeast cells and residual substrate) can be removed. This high rejection is also followed by a high and stable flux performance at 40.20 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1) where the flux was increased by 13 times compared to that of the neat membrane. The PVA-coated PVDF-GO/TiO2showed the best anti-biofouling performance with a flux recovery ratio after 5 days incubation(Frr5d) of 93.55%. This membrane material has excellent prospects in future membrane development for either in-situ application or as a pre-filtration in the fermentation process to separate living cells and residual substrates before being further processed in the refining processes.

Alcoholic liver disease(ALD) is one of the most common indications for liver transplantation(LT). However, it has always remained as a complicated topic from both medical and ethical grounds, as it is seen for many a "self-inflicted disease". Over the years, the survival rate of transplanted patients has significantly improved. The allocation system and the inclusion criteria for LT has also undergone some modifications. Early LT for acute alcoholic hepatitis has been subject to recent clinical studies with encouraging results in highly selected patients. We have learned from studies the importance of a multidisciplinary evaluation of candidates for LT. Complete abstinence should be attempted to overcome addiction issues and to allow spontaneous liver recovery. risk factors for relapse include the presence of anxiety or depressive disorder, short duration of sobriety pre-LT and lack of social support. The identification of risk factors and the strengthen of social support system may decrease relapse among these patients. Family counseling of candidates is highly encouraged to prevent relapse to alcohol. relapse has been associated with different histopathological changes, graft damage, graft loss and even decrease in survival among some studies. Therefore, each patient should be carefully selected and priority is to continue to lean on patients with high probability of success. The ethical issue remains as to the patient returning to drinking after the LT, hindering the way for other patients who could have received the same organ.

Malignant biliary strictures often present late after the window for curative resection has elapsed. In such patients, the goal of therapy is typically focused on palliation. While historically, palliative measures were performed surgically, the advent of endoscopic intervention offers minimally invasive options to provide relief of symptoms, improve quality of life, and in some cases, increase survival of these patients. Some of these therapies, such as endoscopic biliary decompression, have become mainstays of treatment for decades, whereas newer modalities, including radiofrequency ablation, and photodynamic therapy offer additional options for patients with incurable biliary malignancies.

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is a group of chronic multifactorial disorders. According to a recent study,the number of IBD association loci is increased to 201,of which 37 and 27 loci contribute specifically to the development of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis respectively. Some IBD associated genes are involved in innate immunity,in the autophagy and in the inflammatory response such as NOD2,ATG16L1 and IL23 r,while other are implicated in immune mediated disease(STAT3) and in susceptibility to mycobacterium infection(IL12B). In case of early onset of IBD(VEO-IBD) within the 6th year of age,the disease may be caused by mutations in genes responsible for severe monogenic disorders such as the primary immunodeficiency diseases. In this review we discuss how these monogenic disorders through different immune mechanisms can similarly be responsible of VEO-IBD phenotype. Moreover we would highlight how the identification of pathogenic genes by Next Generation Sequencing technologies can allow to obtain a rapid diagnosis and to apply specific therapies.
