AIM:Most cancer cells acquire immortal capability by telornerase activation. The human telornerase reverse transcriptase gene (hTERT) is considered to be the major determinant of the enzymatic activity of human telomerase,and the hTERTpromoter contains several c-lylyc binding sites that mediate hTERTtranscriptional activation. Few studies have examined the role of hTERTin hepatocarcinogenesis,and the relationship between c-Myc and telomerase in human hepatocellular carcinoma tissue is ***:We measured hTERTmRNA levels and c-Myc oncoprotein expression in 57 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma using in situhybridization and immunohistochemistry,respectively. The transcription regulation of hTERT was evaluated by transient transfection of pGL3-1375 into the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line J5. To determine the relationship between c-Myc and the hTERTpromoter, a 1375-bp DNA fragment encompassing the promoter was placed upstream of the luciferase reporter gene and transiently transfected into the cell line. Two additional hTERT promoter constructs (-776 and -100 bp region) and an hTERT promoter-LUC construct containing 2 c-Myc mutations (pGL3-181 MycMT) were also used for luciferase ***:In 30 of 57 cases (52%), hTERTmRNA expression was associated with c-Myc protein expression. However,16 of 57 cases (28%) showed strong hTERTmRNA detection without c-Myc protein expression, and 11 cases (19%) showed weak hTERTmRNA expression and strong c-Myc *** luciferase activity was decreased between upstream 1375 bp and 776 bp, there was no significant difference between upstream 776 bp and 100 bp. The hardening of the Mg-9%Li-1%Zn alloy does not depend strongly on precipitation through aging, but cold rolling is moderately effective. The Mg-9%Li-1%Zn alloy had a dual phase structure with dispersed particles of ZnO and MgO oxides. The Wurtzite structure of ZnO was well oriented with respect to the Mg matrix, but the MgO was not. Peak aging at a temperature of 100℃ was at 10hrs. At 50℃, the hardness reached the maximum value after an aging period of about 100 hrs. The appearance of the extra bump next to the main peak of α(002) after aging at 50℃/100 hrs and 100℃/10 hrs, was thought to correspond to a precipitate phase or spinodal decomposition.

Most of the early prostate cancer has no obvious symptoms, but its malignancy metastasis will cause largely deaths. The treatment options for patients with prostate cancer include traditional surgery, external beam therapy, hormone therapy, small molecular drug and cryosurgery. It was considered non-traditional treatments also can be used in alternative medicines for prostate cancer therapy. There are well-known molecular mechanisms and their pathogenesis, which provide potential targets for drug screening on the prostate cancer. Currently, natural plant extracts or human tissues active ingredients are widely used for the treatment of cancer. Then isolated effective substances in the extract, and further prepared large amounts of small molecule drugs by chemical synthesis. In this review, we summarized four small molecular drugs, abiraterone, docetaxel, isochaihulactone and butylidenephthalide, and their detailed anti-tumor mechanisms. These indicate that small molecular drug is a very efficient way and can be used for prostate cancer treatment.

AIM： To study the role of CDH1/E-cadherin （E-cad） gene alteration profiles including mutation, loss of heterozygosity （LOH）, promoter polymorphism and hypermethylation in mechanisms of CDH1 inactivation in gastric carcinoma （GC）. METHODS： Specimens were collected surgically from 70 patients with GC. Allelotyping PCR and detection of LOH, denaturing high pressure liquid chromatography and DNA sequencing, restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, methylation specific PCR, and immunohistochemical staining were used. RESULTS： Promoter polymorphism was not a major mechanism of E-cad inactivation. Only one truncating mutation was found in a diffuse type tumor （3%）. Both LOH and promoter hypermethylation were major mechanisms of E-cad inactivation, but interestingly, there was a negative association between the fraction of allelic loss （LOH） in tumors and hypermethylation of CDH1. Therefore LOH and hypermethylation were two different tumorigenic pathways involved in GC. CONCLUSION： Given the findings that somatic mutation was extremely low and the relationship between LOH and hypermethylation was inverse, any two combinations of these three factors cannot fulfill the classical two-hit hypothesis of CDH1 inactivation. Thus, other mechanisms operating at the transcriptional level or at the post-translational level might be required to induce E-cadherin inactivation.

At the aim of delivering education to students who are physically departed from their teachers to access more education resources via Internet, distance learning becomes a trend in the teaching field. Currently, synchronous learning model are mostly supported for those users located in geographically dispersed classrooms at this early stage of distance learning environment construction in Taiwan. To consider economically, the solution to reach a low-cost goal of providing learning resources for students is quite demanded. Therefore, the paper will indicate that the design and implementation experiences of constructing a configurable display network for distance learning. A root display node sharing the learning resources builds a dynamic display network for a distance learning while other display nodes joint to it in succession. In this paper, we proposed an idea of a multiple display embedded system to assist in the distance learning for lowering the cost and complexity of sharing the learning resources. In a multiple display system, a display node is a software component bundled with an embedded wireless module connecting to a display projector or panel in a classroom. Moreover, soft component of display node is implemented an interface for mobile device to make a remote control. We also presented a node soliciting algorithm to articulate the construction of the learning display network, including of the design of display nodes.

Aim： To compare the results of bladder tumor associated antigen （BTA TRAK）, nuclear matrix protein 22 （NMP 22） and voided urine cytology （VUC） in detecting bladder cancer. Methods： A total of 135 elderly male and 50 healthy volunteers enrolled in this study were classified into three groups：（i） 93 patients with bladder cancer; （ii） 42 patients with urinary benign conditions; and （iii） 50 healthy volunteers. BTA TRAK and NMP 22 kits were used to detect bladder cancer. Voided urine cytology was used to compare the sensitivity and specificity of the screening tests. Results： The sensitivity and specificity of cytology, BTA TRAK and NMP 22 were 24% and 97%, 51% and 73%, 78% and 73%, respectively. The level of NMP 22 increased with tumor grading. The BTA TRAK kit has the lowest sensitivity among the screening tests. The NMP 22 with the best sensitivity can be an adjunct to cytology for evaluating bladder cancer. Conclusion： The NMP 22 test has a better correlation with the grading of the bladder cancer than BTA TRAK. As cytology units are typically not available in hospitals or in outpatient clinics, NMP 22 might be a promising tool for screening bladder cancer.

AIM:To investigate the prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor messenger RNA (VEGF mRNA) in the peripheral blood (PB) of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing curative ***:Using a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-based assay, VEGF mRNA in the PB was determined prospectively in 50 controls and in 50 consecutive patients undergoing curative resection for ***:Among the isoforms of VEGF mRNA, VEGF165 and VEGF121 were expressed. By multivariate analysis, a higher level of VEGF165 in preoperative PB correlated with a risk of HCC recurrence with borderline significance (P=0.050)and significantly with recurrence-related mortality (P=0.048);while VEGF121 did not. Other significant predictors of HCC recurrence included cellular dedifferentiation (P=0.033),an absent or incomplete capsule (P=0.020), vascular permeation (P=0.018), and daughter nodules (P=0.006).The other significant parameter of recurrence related mortality was cellular dedifferentiation (P=0.053). The level of circulating VEGF mRNA, however, did not significantly correlate with tumor size, cellular differentiation, capsule,daughter nodules, vascular permeation, necrosis and hemorrhage of ***: The preoperative level of circulating VEGF mRNA, especially isoform VEGF165, plays a significant role in the prediction of postoperative recurrence of HCC.
