Antibacterial activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles(Zn O-NPs) has received significant interest worldwide particularly by the implementation of nanotechnology to synthesize particles in the nanometer region. Many microorganisms exist in the range from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers. Zn O-NPs exhibit attractive antibacterial properties due to increased specific surface area as the reduced particle size leading to enhanced particle surface reactivity. Zn O is a bio-safe material that possesses photo-oxidizing and photocatalysis impacts on chemical and biological species. This review covered Zn O-NPs antibacterial activity including testing methods, impact of UV illumination, Zn O particle properties(size, concentration, morphology, and defects), particle surface modification, and minimum inhibitory concentration. Particular emphasize was given to bactericidal and bacteriostatic mechanisms with focus on generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) including hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), OH-(hydroxyl radicals), and O2-2(peroxide). ROS has been a major factor for several mechanisms including cell wall damage due to Zn O-localized interaction, enhanced membrane permeability, internalization of NPs due to loss of proton motive force and uptake of toxic dissolved zinc *** have led to mitochondria weakness, intracellular outflow, and release in gene expression of oxidative stress which caused eventual cell growth inhibition and cell death. In some cases, enhanced antibacterial activity can be attributed to surface defects on Zn O abrasive surface texture. One functional application of the Zn O antibacterial bioactivity was discussed in food packaging industry where Zn O-NPs are used as an antibacterial agent toward foodborne diseases. Proper incorporation of Zn O-NPs into packaging materials can cause interaction with foodborne pathogens, thereby releasing NPs onto food surface where they come in contact with bad bacteria and cause the bacterial death and/or in

Multistage-batch bipolar membrane electrodialysis for base production from high-salinity wastewater

Bipolar membrane electrodialysis(BMED)is considered a state-of-the-art technology for the conversion of salts into acids and ***,the low concentration of base generated from a traditional BMED process may limit the viability of this technology for a large-scale ***,we report an especially designed multistage-batch(two/three-stage-batch)BMED process to increase the base concentration by adjusting different volume ratios in the acid(Vacid),base(Vbase),and salt compartments(Vsalt).The findings indicated that performance of the two-stage-batch with a volume ratio of Vacid:Vbase:Vsalt=1:1:5 was superior in comparison to the threestage-batch with a volume ratio of Vacid:Vbase:Vsalt=1:1:***,the base concentration could be further increased by exchanging the acid produced in the acid compartment with fresh water in the second stage-batch *** the two-stage-batch BMED,the maximum concentration of the base can be obtained up to 3.40 mol∙L^(-1),which was higher than the most reported base production by *** low energy consumption and high current efficiency further authenticate that the designed process is reliable,cost-effective,and more productive to convert saline water into valuable industrial commodities.

High Gain of UWB Planar Antenna Utilising FSS Reflector for UWB Applications

In this paper,a high gain and directional coplanarwaveguide(CPW)-fed ultra-wideband(UWB)planar antenna with a new frequency selective surface(FSS)unit cells design is proposed for UWB *** proposed UWB antenna was designed based on the Mercedes artistic-shaped planar(MAP)*** antenna consisted of a circular ring embedded with three straight legs for antenna impedance bandwidth *** modelled FSS used the integration of a two parallel conductive metallic patch with a circular loop *** FSS provided a UWB stopband filter response covering a bandwidth of 10.5 GHz,for frequencies from 2.2 to 12.7 *** proposed FSS had a compact physical dimension of 5 mm×5 mm×1.6 mm,with a printed array of 19×19 FSS unit *** FSS unit cells were printed on only one side of the dielectric FR4 substrate and placed as a sandwich between the antenna and the reflector ground *** equivalent circuit configuration(ECC)was used to verify the FSS unit cell structure’s *** simulated results indicated that the UWB MAP antenna and FSS reflector provided a fractional bandwidth of 136%and a high gain of 11.5 dB at 8.5 GHz with an acceptable radiation efficiency of 89%.Furthermore,the gain was improved across the operating band and kept between 8.3 and 11.5 *** proposed antenna was in good agreement between theoretical and experimental results and offered a wide enough bandwidth for UWB and vehicle applications.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a causative agent of melioidosis that can infect humans and animals in endemic countries,specifically in Southeast Asia and tropical Australia.A fundamental component for the pathogenesis of Burkholderia pseudomallei is the capability of the bacterium to enter,survive,replicate,and cause disease in a host cell by inducing the host cell *** fusion results in multinucleated-giant cell formation,thus enabling the dissemination of Burkholderia pseudomallei *** reacts to Burkholderia pseudomallei infection by activating the cGAS-STING pathway and subsequently limiting host's aberrant cell division and cellular replication by inducing autophagic cell *** this review,we discuss the host-pathogen interactions between the typeⅥsecretion system 5(T6SS-5)of Burkholderia pseudomallei and human cGAS pathway in melioidosis *** T6SS-5 is a main virulent factor in Burkholderia pseudomallei and the c GAS pathway is vital for host immune response,elucidating their functions is important for better understanding the pathogenesis of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Soil is of particular interest to the forensic community because it can be used as valuable associative evidence to link a suspect to a victim or a crime *** chromatography is a powerful analytical tool for organic compound ***,high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)has proven to be an efficient method for forensic soil analysis,especially in discriminating soils from proximity ***,ultra-performance liquid chromatography(UPLC),which is much more sensitive than HPLC,has never been explored in this *** study proposed a UPLC method for profiling non-volatile organic compounds in three Malaysian soils(red,brown and yellowish-brown soils).The three soils were analysed separately to assess the effects of individual chromatographic parameters:(a)elution programme(isocratic *** gradient programmes);(b)flow rate(0.1 vs.0.2 mL/min);(c)extraction solvent(acetonitrile ***)and(d)detection wavelength(230 vs.254 nm).The injection volume and total run time were set to 5μL and 35 min,***,each soil sample gave 24 different *** showed that the most desirable chromatographic parameters were(a)isocratic elution;(b)flow rate at 0.2 mL/min and(c)acetonitrile extraction *** proposed UPLC system is expected to be a feasible method for profiling non-volatile organic compounds in soil,and is more chemical-efficient than a comparable HPLC system.

Production of Amylase Enzyme through Solid State Fermentation by Aspergillus niger

Traditionally, coconut dregs will be used as animal feed after the extraction of coconut oil and coconut milk from the copra. This study was carried out to discover the commercial value of coconut dregs as a solid substrate in the production of amylase through solid state fermentation （SSF） since this agro-waste is fairly rich in nutrients, providing the necessary nutrients supplementation for better microbial activity to produce enzymes. In this study, amylase is to be produced from coconut dregs by Aspergillus niger through solid state fermentation （SSF）. Three parameters were covered, which are incubation time, initial moisture content of substrate and inoculum sizes. SSF was carried out by using incubator at 37 ~C to test for enzyme activity at these following parameters： incubation time： 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours; substrate moisture content： 64, 66, 68, 70 and 72% （w/w）; inoculum sizes： 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mL spore suspension （5.5 × 10^6 spores/mL）. Enzyme activities were measured through the estimation of liberated reducing sugars after the assay of amylase enzyme by using DNS （3, 5 dinitrosalicylic acid） method. Highest enzyme activities were obtained at these following parameters： incubation time： 72 hours （31.76 U/gds）; initial moisture content ofsubstrate： 66% （26.66 U / gds） and inoculum sizes： 2.0 mL （30.56 U/gds）.
