Current investigation has shown that human exposure to aflatoxins is not limited to the administration of contaminated cereals,but water is another possible *** study was aimed to design easily applicable method to eliminate aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from contaminated drinking *** has been used for preparation of probiotic-coated polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and cellulose acetate(CA)*** of these hybrid nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).SEM showed the proper coating of probiotic strains(Kluyveromyces lactis CBS 2359 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763)on both nanofiber *** areas(1-5 cm^(2))of the probiotic-nanofiber hybrid were used to enhance the removal of 20 ng/ml of aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from prepared AFB2-contaminated water over *** revealed that a 5 cm^(2) area of probiotic-coated PVA nanofibers can eliminate 97.5% of AFB2 as compared to 87.5%,90.5%,93.5%,and 95.5%,for 1 cm2,2 cm^(2),3 cm^(2),and 4 cm^(2),respectively,while probiotic-coated CA nanofibers were slightly less ***,the cytotoxicity of probiotics-CA treated water on cultured human fibroblasts was almost 10 times lower than the cytotoxicity recorded in probiotics-PVA treated ***,results of the current research suggest that probiotics-polymer nanofiber membranes can be used as an extra stage in the water purification system for the treatment of AFB2-contaminated water.

Rapid Biosynthesis Method and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Using <i>Zizyphus spina christi</i>Leaf Extract and Their Antibacterial Efficacy in Therapeutic Application

Antibacterial activity of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was significant in therapeutic application of nanotechnology. These researchers studied an ecofriendly and rapid method for the first time to synthesize silver nanoparticles using Zizyphus spina christi L aqueous leaves extract (ZSE), and their antibacterial properties. The extract was found to have the potential to form silver nanoparticles at room temperature within few minutes. The green synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized using different techniques. The UV-visible spectrum of the solution containing AgNPs showed a peak at 414 nm corresponding to the plasmon absorbance of silver nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the formed particles were hexagonal in shape with appreciable Nano size ranging from 21.5 to 59.67 nm. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis (FTIR) of biosynthesized AgNPs affirmed the role of ZSE as reducing and capping agent of Ag+ ions to AgNPs, and X-Ray Diffraction patterns (XRD) showed that they could be indexed as face-centered-cubic structure of silver. Antibacterial activity of AgNPs was determined by well diffusion and micro plate assay methods, showing maximum inhibition zones of 24 mm, 23 mm, 15 mm and 17 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) results showed that AgNPs had MIC, MBC of 45, 57 μg/mL, 49, 61 μg/mL, 63, 90 μg/mL and 59, 82 μg/mL against S. aureus, Acinetobacter sp., P. aeruginosa and E. coli respectively. Furthermore, the green synthesized AgNPs were loaded on band-aids and screened for antibacterial activity. The AgNPs loaded on band-aids exhibited strong antibacterial effect against multi drug resistant bacteria. These nanoparticles could be used for treating wounds and preparing wound dressing. Simple EPR/Alanine Dosimeter for Medical Application

Linac x-ray and direct gamma irradiation sources were used in this study to irradiate simple polycrystalline alanine- in-glass (AiG) dosimeters with low-doses, typical for medical therapy, and high-doses, typical for syringes’ sterilization processe, respectively. The generated “stable” alanine radicals were quantitatively investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in the presence of an external standard reference (Mn2+/MgO) to correct for spec- trometer sensitivity variation. The results indicated that the de-amination of L-alanine is the main reaction to form the “stable” radical and the AiG-dosimeter gives comparable sensitivity for both low and high radiation doses. Moreover, a linear EPR-radiation dose response is observed over a very wide range, from 0 to 50 kGy, which is contrary to what has been reported by Bruker BioSpin using alanine’s pellet. This linear response and the well-known doses’ cumulative characteristics of alanine are in favor of the use of this simple dosimeter in ample medical applications, particularly the conventional radiotherapy treatment per patient.

Ensuring Security, Confidentiality and Fine-Grained Data Access Control of Cloud Data Storage Implementation Environment

With the development of cloud computing, the mutual understandability among distributed data access control has become an important issue in the security field of cloud computing. To ensure security, confidentiality and fine-grained data access control of Cloud Data Storage (CDS) environment, we proposed Multi-Agent System (MAS) architecture. This architecture consists of two agents: Cloud Service Provider Agent (CSPA) and Cloud Data Confidentiality Agent (CDConA). CSPA provides a graphical interface to the cloud user that facilitates the access to the services offered by the system. CDConA provides each cloud user by definition and enforcement expressive and flexible access structure as a logic formula over cloud data file attributes. This new access control is named as Formula-Based Cloud Data Access Control (FCDAC). Our proposed FCDAC based on MAS architecture consists of four layers: interface layer, existing access control layer, proposed FCDAC layer and CDS layer as well as four types of entities of Cloud Service Provider (CSP), cloud users, knowledge base and confidentiality policy roles. FCDAC, it’s an access policy determined by our MAS architecture, not by the CSPs. A prototype of our proposed FCDAC scheme is implemented using the Java Agent Development Framework Security (JADE-S). Our results in the practical scenario defined formally in this paper, show the Round Trip Time (RTT) for an agent to travel in our system and measured by the times required for an agent to travel around different number of cloud users before and after implementing FCDAC.

A Correlation between Histochemical Patterns of Connective Tissue Fibers and AgNORs in Breast Lesions

Background: The precise histopathologic diagnosis of a breast lesion is the first step towards the most appropriate inclusive patient’s management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between histochemical patterns of connective tissue fibers and NORs in breast lesions. Methodology: Patients with breast cancer (n = 25) were ascertained as the case group, and those with benign breast lesions were ascertained as a control group (n = 25). Histochemical evaluations of elastic fibers, reticular fibers and mean AgNORs count were performed for all study subjects. Results: Elastic fibers intensity was brought into being lessening in benign lesions and upturns in the direction of malignant lesions. The intensity of elastic fibers was found to intensify with rises of neoplastic changes in breast cancer and this was found to be statistically significant P Conclusion: Demonstration of connective tissue fibers (particularly elastic fibers) can strength the diagnostic evidence for conventional histopathology diagnosis. Mean AgNORs count can merge as an important quantitative marker in breast cancer diagnosis.

Preparation and Characterization of Hot-Pressed and Sintered BiPbSrCaCuO Superconductor

Powder compacts of the system Bi2–xPbxSr2Ca2Cu3Oy with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5 molar ratio using both techniques;isothermal hot pressing and the solid state reaction (sintering). The XRD of the hot pressed powder compacts of the nominal compositions Bi2–xPbxSr2Ca2Cu3Oy showed 2212 and 2223 phases. The resistivity temperature variations belonging to the composition Bi1.8Pb0.2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy showed metal-superconducting transition at Tons = 143 K for the annealed sample for 24 h. The annealed nominal composition Bi1.5Pb0.5Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy for 18 h showed metal to superconducting transition at 80 K.

Numerical Calculations of Some Plasma Parameters of the Capacitively Coupled <i>RF</i>Discharge

Numerical calculations by using a self-consistent model of the collisional sheath for the capacitively coupled RF discharge are our target. The results indicated that, at high pressure, the ohmic heating is usually the dominant heating mechanism in the discharge. The power dissipated in the sheath is calculated and compared with the measured data. Moreover, we indicated that, when the gas pressure is increased, the calculated dissipated power is decreased also while the measured input RF power is increased. Furthermore the sheath thickness of the capacitively coupled discharge is calculated and in the same order of the electron oscillation amplitude in the RF field, while the ionization mean free path is shorter than it.

Removal of Phenol Using Spore Forming Bacillus ABO11 Isolated from Waste Water Treatment Plant

Twenty isolates of bacteria were isolated from contaminated wastewater collected from wastewater treatment station, used to clean the raw sewage at Jeddah on minimal medium containing phenol (0.5 g/l) as carbon source while at 0.6 g/l phenol, five isolates belonging to Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria were obtained after 10 days of growth at 37°C. All the tested bacteria were tested for phenol degradation in liquid medium and isolate ABO11 was the most active isolate in phenol degradation. It was selected and tested for the ability to use phenol as carbon and energy source. It was identified as Bacillus sterothermophilus ABO11 using morphological and biochemical tests. Genetic studies confirmed the identification. Bacterial growth and phenol degradation by the selected bacterium were determined using different initial phenol concentrations (0 - 1.0 g/l). Very weak growth was recorded at 0.8 g/l and no growth or degradation was observed at higher phenol concentration. The isolate was adapted to grow in presence of 0.8 g/l phenol and phenol degradation was checked up to 12 days of growth. Percentage of degradation was 100% after 10 days. Maximum growth was observed at 40°C, pH 8 and using NH4Cl as nitrogen source. In conclusion, the selected isolate, Bacillus sterothermophilus ABO11 can be used in protecting the environment from phenol pollution.

Scenario-Based, Single Best, Multiple-Choice Questions (SB-SB-MCQs) in Basic Medical Sciences: An Exploratory Study about the Staff Awareness, Knowledge and Difficulties Encountered

Background: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) are well known and widely used assessment tool. They can be used to measure the different levels of educational outcomes: knowledge, understanding, judgment and problem solving. Traditional MCQs (stand-alone MCQs) often are used as a tool for facts recall. Advantages of using Scenario-based questions (SBQs) include more focus on learning objectives and ability to assess higher levels of learning. Shifting to scenario-based questions can increase the level of difficulty and measure higher levels of cognition. Purpose: This study explores the current knowledge and overall awareness of the undergraduate teaching staff about the use and difficulties of scenario-based single-best answer, multiple-choice questions (SB-SBA-MCQs) in assessments of the basic medical sciences. Method: We used an e-Likert scale questionnaire to explore this issue. The questionnaire covered the current knowledge, experience of staff in writing (SB-SBA-MCQs), courses or postgraduate degrees they attended and difficulties they face or anticipate in writing (SB-SBA-MCQs). Results: The majority (86%) are familiar with courses or workshops related to MCQs writing and assessment in general, a small minority have not attended any. The majority (86%) had some experience in writing MCQs. Only, a small percentage have not tried writing this type of MCQs. Nearly 60% think it takes time to construct, the majority (96%) of those researched are in support of shifting to scenario-based MCQs in basic medical sciences. Conclusion: The study has shown most of the teachers of basic medical sciences are aware of and with good knowledge in (SB-SBA-MCQs). It also highlighted the importance and need for regular training courses and workshops on the same.

Comparative Studies between Chemical and Tribochemical Reactions of Some Metal Complexes Derived from N-(O-Hydoxyphenyl)-N'-phenylthiourea (L)

The reactions of N-(O-hydoxyphenyl)-N'-phenylthiourea (L) derived from with Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+ and Co3+ chloride and/or iodide afford new metal complexes. The isolated complexes were synthesized by two different techniques (chemical and tribochemical methods). Two complexes were synthesized by the direct chemical reactions of N-(O-hydoxyphenyl)-N'-phenylthiourea (L) with MCl2·XH2O (M = Co2+ and Cu2+;X = 6 in case of Co2+ and X = 2 in case of Cu2+) in absolute EtOH. The general formulae of the two complexes derived by the chemical method are [Cu(L)2(EtOH)2]Cl2 and [Co(L)2Cl2]Cl. These complexes were used to synthesize another two complexes using tribochemical reaction by grinding the previous chloride complexes with excess KI in agate mortar in the solid state. The isolated complexes have the general formulae, [Cu(L)I·H2O]·1/2H2O and [Co(L)I3(Et- OH)]·3EtOH. The results indicate the substitution of the chloride by iodide ions during grinding and extraction of the complexes by solvents. The IR spectra of the complexes suggest that L acts in a bidentate manner towards the metal ions. Moreover, the results of electronic spectra and magnetic measurements for the chloride complexes suggest distorted-octahedral structure for Cu2+ and low-spin octahedral structures around the CoII and Cu2+ ions, respectively. On the other hand the data suggest that the iodide complexes have square-planer and low-spin for the Cu+ and Co3+ ions, respectively. The results of mass spectra confirm the formulae proposed for the isolated complexes. The mechanisms of reduction of CuII and oxidation of CoII for the metal complexes were elucidated.
