Transformations of particles, metal elements and natural organic matter in different water treatment processes

Characterizing natural organic matter （NOM）, particles and elements in different water treatment processes can give a useful information to optimize water treatment operations. In this article, transformations of particles, metal elements and NOM in a pilot-scale water treatment plant were investigated by laser light granularity system, particle counter, glass-fiber membrane filtration, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, ultra filtration and resin absorbents fractionation. The results showed that particles, NOM and trihalomethane formation precursors were removed synergistically by sequential treatment of different processes. Preozonation markedly changed the polarity and molecular weight of NOM, and it could be conducive to the following coagulation process through destabilizing particles and colloids; mid-ozonation enhanced the subsequent granular activated carbon （GAC） filtration process by decreasing molecular weight of organic matters. Coagulation-flotation and GAC were more efficient in removing fixed suspended solids and larger particles; while sand-filtration was more efficient in removing volatile suspended solids and smaller particles. Flotation performed better than sedimentation in terms of particle and NOM removal. The type of coagulant could greatly affect the performance of coagulation-flotation. Pre-hydrolyzed composite coagulant （HPAC） was superior to FeCl3 concerning the removals of hydrophobic dissolved organic carbon and volatile suspended solids. The leakages of flocs from sand-filtration and microorganisms from GAC should be mitigated to ensure the reliability of the whole treatment system.

Exploring complex urban growth and land use efficiency in China's developed regions:implications for territorial spatial planning

Developed regions in China have experienced rapid urban expansion and have consequently induced a series of challenging environmental issues since its economic reform and *** Zhejiang as a case study area,the present paper explores the complex types of urban growth over the last four decades as well as land use ***,it discusses the implications of the aforementioned on China national territorial spatial planning(TSP).The acquired results have shown that:1)urban expansion has slowed down,exhibiting a three-stage trend of"slight increase(1980-1990)—dramatic growth(1990-2010)—slow growth(after 2010)";2)the complex types of urban growth reveal that the urban diffusion has been gradually controlled and the urban form tends to be more condensed;and 3)the mean values for pure technical efficiency(PTE)and scale efficiency(SE)of urban land use are 0.83 and 0.95 respectively,indicating PTE as the main factor restricting the improvement of urban land *** on these results,some beneficial policy implications and suggestions for TSP are ***,it is suggested that"Inventory Planning"will be the main direction of TSP other than"Incremental Planning".Secondly,we should pay more attention to the protection of cultivated land and ecological ***,TSP should guide the economic growth away from simply relying on resource inputs and steer it toward technology and capital investment.

Investigation of the medium calcium based non-burnt brick made by red mud and fly ash: durability and hydration characteristics

Red mud is a type of highly alkaline waste residue produced in the process of alumina smelting by the Bayer *** on the idea of medium calcium content,solid wastes such as red mud and fly ash were used to prepare non-burnt bricks;and the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was selected in the range of 0.88–*** properties and durability were investigated with a compressive strength test.X-ray diffractometry(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)techniques were used to characterize the hydration *** environmental performance was analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry(ICP).The results indicated that the mechanical properties and the durability were optimal when the mass ratio of CaO/SiO2 was *** hydration products were mostly C–S–H gel,ettringite,Na4Ca(Si10All6)O32·12H2O and Ca3Al2(SiO4)(OH)*** were responsible for the strength development,and the CaO/SiO2 mass ratio of 1.23 had the best polymerized *** results of an environmental performance test showed that the heavy metals in the raw materials were well-solidified in the ***,this paper provides an effective solution for use of solid wastes in building material.

Overproduction of small-molecule chemicals using engineered microbial cells has greatly reduced the production cost and promoted environmental protection. Notably, the rapid and sensitive evaluation of the in vivo concentrations of the desired products greatly facilitates the optimization process of cell factories. For this purpose, many genetic components have been adapted into in vivo biosensors of small molecules, which couple the intracel- lular concentrations of small molecules to easily detectable readouts such as fluorescence, absorbance, and cell growth. Such biosensors allow a high-throughput screen- ing of the small-molecule products, and can be roughly classified as protein-based and RNA-based biosensors. This review summarizes the recent developments in the design and applications of biosensors for small-molecule products.

Morphological reconstruction of the Ediacaran macroalga Gesinella from South China

Macroalga Gesinella,a carbonaceous compression,is found in the upper part of Doushantuo Formation(Ediacaran)in the Yangtze Platform of South ***,it is composed of a thallus(including an oval or oblong lamina and a short-rod-like stipe)and a holdfast(including a cone-shaped rhizome and many filamentous rhizoids).The cone-shaped rhizome connects with the stipe and the long rhizoids grew on the rhizome,meaning that the rhizome grew downwards and inserted into the sediment,while the rhizoids grew in the gaps between the sediment grains to anchor its body on the *** the lamina,branching and/or unbranching filaments are regularly distributed,so that the oval or oblong lamina can be interpreted as a sac-like body that has been *** filaments on the lamina extend from the three-dimensionally preserved stipe,suggesting that the short-rod-like stipe may have been flexible to support the sac-like body in the water *** tissue and organ differentiations,Gesinella can be regarded as a eukaryotic macroalga and a high-level *** on measurement and analysis of 108 specimens,the Ediacaran macroalga Gesinella from South China can be divided into three stages:juvenile stage(10 mm maximum width)that grew sideways.

Effects of decompression joint Governor Vessel electro-acupuncture on rats with acute upper cervical spinal cord injury

Decompression is the major therapeutic strategy for acute spinal cord injury,but there is some debate about the time window for decompression following spinal cord *** important goal and challenge in the treatment of spinal cord injury is inhibiting or reversing secondary *** Vessel electroacupuncture can improve symptoms of spinal cord injury by inhibiting cell apoptosis and improving the microenvironment of the injured spinal *** this study,Governor Vessel electroacupuncture combined with decompression at different time points was used to treat acute spinal cord *** rat models were established by inserting a balloon catheter into the atlanto-occipital *** upper cervical spinal cord was compressed for 12 or 48 hours prior to *** was conducted at the acupoints Dazhui（GV14） and Baihui（GV 20）（2 Hz,15 minutes） once a day for 14 consecutive *** with decompression alone,hind limb motor function recovery was superior after decompression for 12 and 48 hours combined with ***,the recovery of motor function was not significantly different at 14 days after treatment in rats receiving decompression for 12 ***-activating factor levels and caspase-9 protein expression were significantly reduced in rats receiving electroacupuncture compared with decompression *** findings indicate that compared with decompression alone,Governor Vessel electroacupuncture combined with delayed decompression（48 hours） is more effective in the treatment of upper cervical spinal cord *** Vessel electroacupuncture combined with early decompression（12 hours） can accelerate the recovery of nerve movement in rats with upper cervical spinal cord ***,further studies are necessary to confirm whether it is possible to obtain additional benefit compared with early decompression alone.

Multiplicity dependence of charged particle,? meson, and multistrange particle productions in p + p collisions at s^(1/2) = 200 GeV from PYTHIA simulation

We report the multiplicity dependence of charged particle production for the n~±, K~±, p, , and ? mesons at |y|<1:0 in p + p collisions at s^(1/2) = 200 GeV from a PYTHIA simulation. The impact of multiple parton interactions and gluon contributions is studied and found to be a possible source of the splitting of the particle yields as a function of p_T with respect to the multiplicity. No obvious particle species dependence of the splitting is *** multiplicity dependence of the ratios Kˉ/πˉ, K^+/π^+,/πˉ, p/π^+, and K_s^0 at mid-rapidity in p+ p collisions is found to follow a tendency similar to that in Au t Au collisions at (s_(NN))^(1/2) = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, indicating similar underlying initial production mechanisms despite the differences in the initial colliding systems.
