Diagnostic value of serum human epididymis protein 4 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

BACKGROUND Numerous studies have demonstrated that human epididymis protein 4(HE4)is overexpressed in various malignant tissues including ovarian,endometrial,lung,breast,pancreatic,and gastric ***,no study has examined the diagnostic impact of HE4 in patient with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)until *** To analyze the value of four serum tumor markers for the diagnosis of ESCC,and examine the associations of serum levels of HE4 with ESCC patients’clinicopathological *** The case group consisted of 80 ESCC patients,which were compared to a control group of 56 patients with benign esophageal *** levels of HE4,carcinoma embryonic antigen(CEA),alpha fetal protein,and carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA19-9)were detected by *** associations of serum HE4 levels with ESCC patients’clinicopathological characteristics such as gender,tumor location,and pathological stage were also examined after *** The result of ELISA showed that serum HE4 level was significantly higher in the patients with ESCC than in the controls,and the staining intensity was inversely correlated with the pathological T and N *** HE4 levels had a sensitivity of 66.2%and specificity of 78.6%when the cutoff value was set at 3.9 ng/***,the combined HE4 and CA19-9 increased the sensitivity to 83.33%,and interestingly,the combination of HE4 with CEA led to the most powerful sensitivity of 87.5%.Furthermore,A positive correlation was observed between HE4 serum levels and pathological T and N stages(P=0.0002 and 0.0017,respectively),but there was no correlation between HE4 serum levels and ESCC patient gender(P=0.4395)or tumor location(P=0.6777).CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that detection of serum HE4 levels may be useful in auxiliary diagnosis and evaluation of the progression of ESCC.

Methane sensor based on palladium/MWNT nanocomposites

Methane gas sensor was fabricated based on electrocatalytic properties of the Pd/MWNT nanocomposites on indium tin oxide （ITO） glass substrates. A linear response for methane was obtained in the range of 0-16% （v/v） with a detection limit of 0.167% （v/ v） and R.S.D. of 4.1%. After 100 times sensing or stable stored more than 12 months in atmosphere, unconspicuous measurable decrease was observed. The response time was less than 60 s at room temperature and ambient pressure. Some common potential interferents in samples such as N2, CO, CO2, ethane, propane, pentane, methanol, ethanol, H2 and NH3 were investigated and all the effects were less than 5% on the response for 3.0% （v/v） methane. The sensor was applied to methane determinations in man-made gas samples, the results are satisfied.

Genetic mechanisms of secondary pore development zones of Es_4~x in the north zone of the minfeng Sag in the Dongying Depression,East China

The genetic mechanisms of the secondary pore development zones in the lower part of the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation（Es_4／6x） were studied based on core observations,petrographic analysis,fluid inclusion analysis,and petrophysical measurements along with knowledge of the tectonic evolution history,organic matter thermal evolution,and hydrocarbon accumulation *** secondary pore development zones exist in Es_4~x,the depths of which range from 4200 to 4500 m and from 4700 to 4900 m,*** reservoirs in these zones mainly consist of conglomerate in the middle fan braided channels of nearshore subaqueous fans,and the secondary pores in these reservoirs primarily originated from the dissolution of feldspars and carbonate *** reservoirs experienced ‘‘alkaline–acidic–alkaline–acidic–weak acidic＇＇,‘‘normal pressure–overpressure–normal pressure＇＇,and‘‘formation temperature increasing–decreasing–increasing＇＇ diagenetic *** diagenetic evolution sequences were ‘‘compaction/gypsum cementation/halite cementation/pyrite cementation/siderite cementation–feldspar dissolution/quartz overgrowth–carbonate cementation/quartz dissolution/feldspar overgrowth–carbonate dissolution/feldspar dissolution/quartz overgrowth–pyrite cementation and asphalt filling＇＇.Many secondary pores（fewer than the number of primary pores） were formed by feldspar dissolution during early acidic geochemical systems with organic acid when the burial depth of the reservoirs was relatively ***,the pore spaces wereslightly changed because of protection from early hydrocarbon charging and fluid overpressure during deep ***,the present secondary pore development zones were formed when many primary pores were filled by asphalt and pyrite from oil cracking in deeply buried paleoreservoirs.

Study on Interaction of L-Tryptophan with p-Suffonatocalix[4]arene by Spectrofluorometry

The interactions between L-tryptophan（L-Trp） and water-soluble p-sulfonatocalix[4]- arene （SCX4） were investigated by spectrofluorometry. The effect of pH was discussed. The interaction process was estimated from the thermodynamic viewpoint. The SCX4 was found to be able to adjust its conformation to fit the size of L-Trp, and the benzene of L-Trp penetrated into the hydrophobic cavity of SCX4. Meanwhile, the binding mechanism was further elucidated by IHNMR and molecular mechanics calculations.

KAI1 is a potential target for anti-metastasis in pancreatic cancer cells

AIM: To investigate whether KAI1, as a metastasis suppressor gene, is associated with invasive and metastatic ability of pancreatic cancer ***: KAI1 gene was transfected into pancreatic cancer cell line MiaPaCa Ⅱ by liposomes selected with G418. Expression of transfected cells was measured by Western blotting, immunofluorescence and immunocytochemistry. Tumor cell invasion and metastatic ability were detected through gelatinase activity and reconstituted basement membrane (Matrigel) assay. pCMV-KAI1 was directly injected into the heterotopic human pancreatic adenocarcinoma successfully established in the groin of BALB/C nude mice, by subcutaneous injection of MiaPaCa Ⅱ pancreatic cancer cells. The statistical analysis between groups was determined by Student's two tailed t ***: By Western blotting, MiaPaCa Ⅱ cells transfected by KAI1 gene indicated KAI1 expression at approximately 29.1 kDa. Cytoplasm staining was positive and uniformly spread in transfected cancer cells, using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. The most obvious difference was present after 30 h (MiaPaca Ⅱ 43.6 ± 9.42, pCMV-MiaPaca Ⅱ 44.8 ± 8.56, pCMV-KAI1-MiaPaca Ⅱ 22.0 ± 4.69, P mine 1.22 ± 0.31 in A group were lower than control 4.61 ± 1.98 and pCMV-KAI 11.67 ± 0.81. Analyses of metastases with and without KAI1 transfection in mice were different in liver and lung between controls 1.62 ± 0.39, 0.45 ± 0.09, pCMV-KAI 1.01 ± 0.27, 0.33 ± 0.09 and KAI1-Lipofectamine 0.99 ± 0.21, 0.30 ± 0.09 respectively (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: High expression of KAI1 gene was found in transfected MiaPaCa Ⅱ human pancreatic cancer cells with lower metastatic ability. Increase of ambient formaldehyde in Beijing and its implication for VOC reactivity

Influencing atmospheric OH radical budget and tropospheric ozone production, ambient formaldehyde （HCHO） is one of the key oxygenated volatile organic compounds （OVOCs）. We present the variations on formaldehyde column densities in summertime in Beijing retrieved from ozone monitoring instrument （OMI） between 2005 and 2011. Satellite columns of HCHO correlated well with available ground-based measurements despite some noticeable differences. The orthogonal distance regression （ODR） method was used to estimate the ratio between satellite columns and ground-level concentrations, whereas ordinary least squares （OLS） method was used to fit the trend of ambient formaldehyde. The formaldehyde concentrations derived from HCHO columns were in the range of 7-12 ppbv and steadily increased at an approximate rate of 0.64 ppbv/yr （7.8% at 2005 level） with an uncertainty of 51%. VOC reactivity quantified by means of OH loss rates showed increasing contribution from formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, rising from 35% in 2005 to 40% in 2010, and decreasing contribution from anthropogenic VOCs, dropping from 49% in 2005 to 40% in 2010. More attention should be paid to understanding the net feedback of increasing formaldehyde to ozone formation potential.

Interference study on the free calcium in the human peripheral lymphocyte by acrylamide

The role of acrylamide on the human peripheral lymphocytes was studied by laser scanning confocal microscopy technique and fluo-3. The calibration value of the apparent dissociation constant （Kd） of the fluo-3-Ca^2＋ complex was obtained as 4.83 × 10^-7 moi/L. Acrylamide （〈54 μg/mL） evoked a rise in free intracellular calcium concentration [Ca^2＋]i, in a dosedependent manner. Acrylamide induced the increase of [Ca^2＋]i was discussed in detail.

The electro-oxidation of ethanol on a highly preferred orientation (220) Ni electrode and alower texture degree Ni electrode in 1 mol/L NaoH was investigated with cyclicvoltammetry. The mechanism of ethanol oxidation on the highly preferred orientation Nielectrode is proposed. It is shown that the current peak of electro-oxidation of ethanol onthe highly preferred orientation (220) Ni electrode is much higher than that of the lowertextUre degree (220) Ni electrode, Ni(Ⅲ) on the surface of the highly preferredorientation(220)Ni electrode is responsible for the oxidation ethanol.

Neurofibromatosis type 1-associated multiple rectal neuroendocrine tumors: A case report and review of the literature

Neurofibromatosis type 1(NF-1) is commonly associated with benign or malignant tumors in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. However, rare cases of NF-1-associated multiplerectal neuroendocrine tumors have been reported. This report describes a case of a 39 year old female with NF-1 and intermittent hematochezia as a primary symptom. Physical examination showed multiple subcutaneous nodules and café au lait spots with obvious scoliosis of the back. Imaging examinations and colonoscopy found malformation of the left external iliac vein and multiple gray-yellow nodules with varying sizes and shapes in the rectal submucosal layer. Histological and immunohistochemical results suggested multiple rectal neuroendocrine tumors, a rare disease with few appreciable symptoms and a particularly poor prognosis. The patient with NF-1 presented here had not only multiple rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms but also vascular malformations, scoliosis and other multiple system lesions. This case therefore contributes to improving clinical understanding, diagnosis and treatment of related complications for patients with NF-1 who present with associated medical conditions.
