Since the discovery of the hydroformylation(oxo-synthesis or Roelen reaction)and the Reppe-reaction,the transition metal-catalyzed carbonylation reactions,providing versatile,facile,and even atom-economic methods for the selective incorporation of C=O functionality to various skeletons,have gained tremendous importance in synthetic organic chemistry from laboratories to industrial *** carbonylation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds,aromatic halides,triflates,etc.,in the presence of various nucleophiles has led the way to produce aldehydes,carboxylic acids,esters,amides,etc.,in the fine chemical ***,these protocols usually proceed in conventional,fossil-based,and usually toxic reaction ***,several attempts have been directed to developing efficient carbonylation methods in alternative,less harmful,non-fossil-based and even in renewable reaction *** this review,we overview the recent applications of alternative solvents such as water,biomass-based alcohols,γ-valerolactone(GVL),2-methyltetrahydrofuran(2-MeTHF),ionic liquids(ILs),deep eutectic solvents(DES),alkyl levulinates,limonene,α-pinene,and dimethyl carbonate as well as fluorous media to improve efficiency,safety and environmentally benign nature of carbonylation protocols.

Background: Some patients present clinical features of both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which has led to the recent proposal of asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) as a diagnosis. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a candidate biomarker to diagnose ACO. We assessed the effect of an add-on treatment with budesonide/formoterol (BUD/FM) combination in patients with ACO, which was diagnosed by FeNO. Methods: This was a prospective, single-arm, open-label, before and after comparison study. Subjects included 83 patients with COPD who attended outpatient clinics for routine checkups at Shizuoka General Hospital between June and November 2016. All patients fulfilled the GOLD definition of COPD and were receiving long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) or LAMA/long-acting β2 agonist (LABA) combinations. After an 8-week run-in period, BUD/FM was added to the patients with FeNO levels of ≥35 ppb, defined as having ACO. For patients receiving LAMA/LABA, BUD/FM was added after the discontinuation of LABA. The modified British Medical Research Council (mMRC) score, COPD assessment test (CAT) score, spirometric indices, forced oscillation parameters, and FeNO were assessed before and after 8 weeks of BUD/ FM add-on treatment. Results: Twenty-four patients (28.9%) had FeNO levels ≥ 35 ppb, and 17 patients completed the study (mean age: 73 years and GOLD I/II/III/IV, 5/10/1/1). The mean CAT scores significantly improved (9.2 to 5.4, p = 0.015) and 10 patients (58.8%) showed ≥2 points improvement, a minimal clinically important difference. The mean FeNO levels significantly decreased from 63.0 to 34.3 ppb (p Conclusions: FeNO-guided treatment with BUD/FM improves symptoms in patients with ACO.

Objective: Dual bronchodilation with long-acting muscarinic antagonist and long-acting β2-agonist combinations are available worldwide in COPD patients. However, the choice of agents remains under debate. We hypothesized that switching devices between dry powder and soft mist inhalers without a wash-out period to mimic clinical practice would improve clinical symptoms and lung function. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of switching between once-daily glycopyrronium/indacaterol (GLY/IND) or umeclidinium/vilanterol (UMEC/VI), dry powder inhalers, and tiotropium/olodaterol (TIO/OLO), a soft mist inhaler, in COPD patients. Methods: This was a prospective, open-label, 8-week, observational study with follow-up. Subjects included 57 COPD patients, who attended outpatient clinics at Shizuoka General Hospital for routine check-ups between February and December 2015, receiving GLY/IND (50/110 μg) or UMEC/VI (62.5/25 μg). After an 8-week run-in period, medications were switched to TIO/OLO (5/5 μg). Study outcomes included patient’s global rating (PGR), modified MRC (mMRC), COPD assessment test (CAT), and spirometric and forced oscillatory parameters after 8 weeks. PGR used in this study was a 7-point scale ranging from 1 to 7, with 4 in the middle. Patients who consented to switch from TIO/OLO to GLY/IND or UMEC/VI were followed-up thereafter. Results: In total, 53 patients completed the study (mean age, 75 years;48 males and 5 females;GOLD 1/2/3/4 = 19/27/6/1;mMRC 0/1/2/3/4 = 14/22/12/4/1;UMEC/VI 26, GLY/IND 27). PGR, mMRC, and CAT improved in 20 (38%), 9 (17%), and 15 patients (28%), respectively. Respiratory system resistance at 5 Hz (R5), 20 Hz (R20), and the difference between R5 and R20 (R5 - R20) significantly improved. In a follow-up of 16 patients after switching from TIO/OLO to UMEC/VI (9) or GLY/IND (7), PGR, mMRC, and CAT improved in 5 (31%), 3 (12%), and 4 patients (25%), respectively, and R20 significantly improved (p = 0.011). Selective area electron diffraction(SAED)patterns can provide valuable insight into the structure of a ***,the manual identification of collected patterns can be a significant bottleneck in the overall phase classification *** this work,we utilize the recent advances in computer vision and machine learning(ML)to automate the indexing of SAED *** performance of six different ML algorithms is demonstrated using metallic plutonium-zirconium *** most successful approach trained a neural network(NN)to make a classification of the phase and zone axis,and then utilized a second NN to synthesize multiple independent predictions of different tilts in a single sample to make an overall phase *** results demonstrate that automated SAED phase identification using ML is a viable route to accelerate materials characterization.

Using Lean Manufacturing(LM)tools in production processes is crucial for companies’economic,environmental,and social sustainability *** study shows a structural equation model(SEM)that shows the relationship between LM Tools like Kaizen(KAI),Gemba(GEM),Value Stream Mapping(VSM)and Key Performance Indicator(KPI)with Economic Sustainability(ECS).Seven hypotheses were evaluated with data from 179 responses to a questionnaire about the Mexican maquiladora industry,showing that these variables are *** a 95%confidence level,the model was evaluated using the partial least squares *** findings indicate that the relationships between KAI and GEM and KAI and VSM have the strongest relationship,followed by VSM and ECS;however,VSM has the strongest effect on *** on these findings,it is recommended that managers adopt a continuous improvement(KAI)approach based on working directly on the shop floor(GEM and VSM)to support their decisions regarding economic growth(ECS).

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has dramatically improved patient prognosis,and thereby transformed the treatment in various cancer types including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in the past *** antibodies that selectively inhibit programmed cell death-1(PD-1)activity has now become standard of care in the treatment of ESCC in metastatic settings,and has a high expectation to provide clinical benefit during perioperative ***,anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte–associated protein 4(CTLA-4)monoclonal antibody has also been approved in the treatment of recurrent/metastatic ESCC in combination with anti-PD-1 *** understanding of the existing evidence of immune-based treatments for ESCC,as well as recent clinical trials on various combinations with chemotherapy for different clinical settings including neoadjuvant,adjuvant,and metastatic diseases,may provide future prospects of ESCC treatment for better patient outcomes.

Relationship between Nonexercise Activity Thermogenesis and Calf Circumference in Older Women

Purpose: Frailty is a state of declined vitality of the body and mind with age in which life functions are impaired. In addition, there is a difference in the susceptibility of older women to frailty compared with that of older men. Therefore, assessing and encouraging physical activity in older adults before they become frail is essential. We aimed to clarify the relationship between calf circumference and body composition and assess the potential association between calf circumference and physical activity indices in older women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 18 healthy older adults (age 69.0 ± 5.7 years). The physical characteristics, calf circumference, body composition, calf muscle thickness, and physical activity questionnaire that included items on exercise-related activity thermogenesis (EAT) and nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) were assessed. The association between calf circumference and these additional measures was examined. Results: Positive and significant correlations were found between the calf circumference and body weight, body mass index (BMI), skeletal muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass index, calf muscle thickness, total questionnaire score, and NEAT score (r = 0.66 - 0.87). However, no significant correlations were observed between the calf circumference and EAT scores. Conclusion: Calf circumference in older women may reflect NEAT activity. Improving NEAT activity is an important health-promoting factor in older women.

Synthesis of malachite@clay nanocomposite was successfully carried out for the removal of cationic（Methylene Blue,MB） and anionic dyes（Congo Red,CR） from synthetic *** was characterized by TEM,SEM,FT-IR,EDS analysis and zeta *** analysis indicated that the particle diameter of nanocomposite was in the range of 14 to23 *** important parameters *** time,concentration of dyes,nanocomposite dosage,temperature and solution pH were optimized to achieve maximum adsorption *** the case of MB,removal decreased from 99.82%to 93.67%while for CR,removal decreased from 88.55%to 75.69%on increasing dye concentration from 100 to 450 mg/*** study confirmed the higher removal of CR in acidic range while MB removal was higher in alkaline *** study revealed the applicability of pseudo-second-order model for the adsorption of both *** values of AG0 for both systems suggested the feasibility of dye removal and support for spontaneous adsorption of CR and MB on *** showed 277.77 and 238.09 mg/g Langmuir adsorption capacity for MB and CR *** of dyes from the dye loaded nanocomposite was easily carried out with *** results indicate that the prepared malachite@clay nanocomposite is an efficient adsorbent with high adsorption capacity for the aforementioned dyes.

The water-conducting network of capillaries in vascular plants has evolved over hundreds of millions of years in order to be able to cope with bubble clogging,a problem which also affects modern microfluidic *** of anatomical studies have revealed that plants growing in habitats in which the formation of bubbles,or emboli,is likely to be a frequent occurrence often have various forms of geometrical sculpturing on the internal surfaces of the xylem *** possible function of such wall sculpturing has long been the subject of *** have investigated the hypothesis that wall sculpturing is a functional adaptation designed to increase the wettability of the walls of xylem conduits,an effect which could be described as the inverse of the well-known *** results show that wall sculpturing does enhance ***,theoretical calculations reveal that the geometric parameters of various types of wall sculpturing are such that the resulting surfaces are sufficiently rough to enhance wettability,but not significantly *** results provide an appealing answer to the long-standing debate on the function of wall sculpturing in xylem conduits,and may provide biomimetic clues for new approaches to the removal of bubbles in microfluidic channels.
