Neuropsychological features of progranulin-associated frontotemporal dementia: a nested case-control study

the distinction between sporadic and genetic behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia(bvFtD)regarding some neuropsychological(NP)features remains ***,progranulin(GRN)-associated bvFtD frequently presents with early episodic memory impairment and some degree of parietal dysfunction which are supporters of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)*** this context,we aimed to characterize the NP profile of GRN-bvFtD as compared to sporadic-bvFtD and AD in patients with mild dementia(Mini-Mental State Examination score≥17 and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale score≤*** identified 21 patients at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra,Portugal with GRN mutations belonging to fifteen different *** our focus was bvFtD variants,FtD-related aphasic forms(3 patients)were *** remaining 18 GRN-bvFtD were further matched with 18 sporadic-bvFtD and 18 AD patients according to disease staging,age and *** patients completed the Mini-Mental State Examination,Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)and a comprehensive NP assessment *** were converted into *** between groups in individual NP measures and NP domains were assessed through non-parametric tests(Kruskal-Wallis test analysis)and eta squared(ŋ2)was calculated as a measure of effect *** comparisons show that GRN patients have worse performances on verbal retrieval processes(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.110)and visuoconstructive abilities(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.190)than sporadic bvFtD *** compared to AD,GRN patients present a higher impairment in frontal(P=0.001,ŋ2=0.211)and parietal(P=0.041,ŋ2=0.129)measures and a better performance in memory tasks(P=0.020,ŋ2=0.120).Sporadic-bvFtD forms are worse than AD in frontal measures(P=0.032,ŋ2=0.200),being better in both memory(P=0.010,ŋ2=0.131)and visuospatial skills(P=0.023,ŋ2=0.231).Considering these results,we conclude that GRN-bvFtD patients present a NP profile that associates the typical patterns of FtD and AD ***

Sarcopenia and Anemia Are Predictors of Poor Prognostic in Cervical Cancer Patients

Objective: Evaluate pretreatment sarcopenia and anemia as prognostic factors in women undergoing treatment for cervical cancer (CC) with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRt). Methods: 151 women with CC were analysed in this cohort study. Pretreatment computed tomography (Ct) images were analysed to assess skeletal muscle index (SMI). Hazard ratios (HR) and multivariate Cox proportional HR were used to analyse association between low SMI, age, body mass index (BMI), haemoglobin levels, histological type, and International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage with PFS and OS. Results: A total of 151 patients were included, 53 (35.1%) presented pretreatment sarcopenia;51 (34%) stage I/II and 100 (66%) stage III/IV. Among those patients in advanced stage (III/IV) 37 (70%) (p = 0.28) were sarcopenic at the beginning of treatment. Sarcopenia was associated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in our cohort [HR 0.97 (p = 0.01)] [HR 0.73 (p = 0.001)], as well as anemia [HR 0.73 (p = 0.001)] [HR 0.78 (p = 0.001)]. Linear regression models indicated that despite showing no association with age, neutrophil or platelet counts, sarcopenia was associated with pretreatment anemia levels (p = 0.01). After a multivariate analysis, only haemoglobin (anemia) and complete CCRt remained associated with PFS and OS. Sarcopenia and anemia were associated with worse PFS and OS in FIGO stage I/II. Conclusion: Pretreatment sarcopenia was significantly associated with low haemoglobin levels. Anemia and incomplete CCRt were independently associated with poor prognosis in women with CC. Pretreatment sarcopenia, as low SMI, was a predictor of poor prognostic in early stages of CC.

Characterization of the topography and Wettability of English Weed Leaves and Biomimetic Replicas

the topography and wettability of the underside of English weed （Oxalis pes-caprae） leaves and of their biomimetic replicas are investigated. Polyvinyl siloxane molds were cast from the leaves and then filled with an epoxy pre-polymer to produce replicas. the particular topographical structures of leaves and replicas were evaluated by optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM） analysis. the static wettability of leaves and replicas was assessed by contact angle measurements, while the dynamic wettability was characterized by estimating contact angle hysteresis and studying the dynamic behavior of impacting water droplets. A smooth glass slip and its replica were used as control surfaces. the replica moulding method used was able to transfer the characteristic pattern of irregular 100 μm - 200 μm × 60 μm convex papillae interspersed with stomata of the original leaf to the epoxy replicas. the static contact angle of 143°± 3° and the contact angle hysteresis of 2~ indicate that the underside of the English weed leaf is close to superhydrophobic. the lower contact angles （130° ± 4°） and higher hysteresis （31°） observed for the replica when compared with the original leaves were associated to an inaccurate replication of the chemistry and structures of the three-dimensional wax projections covering the plant surface. Also, trichomes in the original leaves could not be accurately reproduced due to their flexibility and fragility. Differences in wetting behavior were also evident from droplet impact experiments, with rebound regimes prevailing in the original leaves and regimes characterized by higher adhesion and larger dissipation predominating in the replicas. Nevertheless, the morphological features of the leaf transferred to the replica were sufficient to promote a clear hydrophobic behavior of the replica when compared with the smooth epoxy reference surface.

the adsorption capacity of hydrogels derived from modified xylan hemicellulose has been tested in order to develop new bio-based adsorbent materials useful for removing metal ions pollutants,such as Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ)and Pb(Ⅱ)from an aqueous *** was extracted from bleached kraft pulp of eucalyptus and subsequently modified with different proportions of functional sulfonic acid groups(HA3-HA7)and sulfonate groups(HS30-HS70)to generate *** results showed that all the synthesized hydrogels were capable of adsorbing metal ions,being the hydrogels with 30%and 50%xylan the ones that presented the highest adsorption *** capacity studies at different initial concentrations revealed that at an initial concentration of 300 mg·L-1,the HA3 hydrogel presented an adsorption capacity of 193mg Pb(Ⅱ),182 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 66 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HA5 hydrogel presented a capacity of 185 mg Pb(Ⅱ),113 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 48 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** HS30 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption of 205 mg Pb(Ⅱ),174 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 71 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g hydrogel,and HS50 hydrogel exhibited an adsorption capacity of 273 mg Pb(Ⅱ),143 mg Cd(Ⅱ),and 45 mg Cu(Ⅱ)per g *** results show that modified Xylan hemicellulose is a promising adsorbent for removal Cd(Ⅱ),Cu(Ⅱ),and Pb(Ⅱ)ions from aqueous solutions.

Ecosystem services(ES)delivery in quantity and quality are essential to improve human ***,often a considerable part of ES provisioning depends on the use of private land(e.g.,flood retention,carbon sequestration,water purification).In this context,the operationalization and implementation of ES concept may collide with legal property ***,it is essential to find constructive mechanisms to engage and encour-age private owners to implement sustainable land uses to reduce the onsite and offsite impacts of their *** paper aims to identify if ES delivery can be constrained by legal private land and how it can be *** is undeniable that land-use changes(e.g.,urbanization,agriculture intensification,and land abandonment)affect the territory’s capacity to deliver ES in quality and *** changes,especially land abandonment,are in-creasing the tradeoffs among ES(e.g.,between carbon sequestration and water yield).Land-use planning should consider these ***,incorporating ES into spatial plans is crucial for stakeholders to understand the impacts of land-use change in the loss of ES *** information can be transmitted through maps that communicate the message in a simplified *** owners can easily perceive the ES relevance that their land can provide if an understandable message is *** this can be a good solution,conflicts can appear even with the implementation of schemes such as Payment for ES(PES).PES is not always effective and can im-pose losses to farmers,disregard their cultural traditions,or not prevent poverty *** this context,it is crucial to consider local specificities to safeguard PES’s success,create a“win-win”and transform a problem into a *** owners’active participation in implementing sustainable practices or a determined land-use in their properties is vital to achieving global targets such as sustainable development goals.

Urban green spaces(UGS)are essential for human well-being,contributing towards quality of life and promoting social interactions and *** to recreational UGS is key to human well-being in urban ***,there is a lack of works focused on recreational UGS accessibility in cities from different countries,using different types of *** this work,we studied the accessibility to recreational UGS in Vilnius(Lithuania)and Coimbra(Portugal)through four transport modes(foot,bike,bus and car)within 5-and 10-minute *** results showed important differences between *** had higher accessibility to recreational UGS than Coimbra in all transport *** both cities,the accessibility was highest by car and lowest by ***,the percentage of population covered by 5-and 10-minute distance UGS accessibility in Vilnius is higher than in Coimbra,despite the lower population density in Vilnius.A large number of recreational UGS,their geographic distribution,the dispersed population pattern,and the location of several urbanizations near recreational UGS increased the inhabitant’s accessibility to recreational UGS in *** differences in accessibility between cities were mainly attributed to the large number of recreational UGS and higher road network density,cycleways and footways density,and bus lines in Vilnius,compared to *** work identified the areas where recreational UGS accessibility is difficult in using different transport modes and need to be improved in study *** is essential to support urban planners and increase cities’*** findings of this work will be important for the management of the studied urban areas.

“Good Vibrations”: the Social Networks of Optimists and Alter-Optimists

this study empirically tested if the personality trait of optimism and the interpersonal capability to generate optimism in one’s network nodes (i.e., alter-optimism) influences the social relationship patterns. the results provide evidence that optimism trait is independent from the way social networks of personal-issue sharing, advice-seeking, problem-solving, and innovation, are structured. In contrary, the alter-optimism capability does provide a good explanation of one’s social network position. Implications of these findings are discussed at the end.

the relationships between climate conditions and wood density in tropical forests are still poorly *** quantify spatial dependence of wood density in the state of Minas Gerais(MG,Brazil),map spatial distribution of density,and correlate density with climate variables,we extracted data from the Forest Inventory of Minas Gerais for 1988 trees scaled throughout the territory and measured wood density of discs removed from the *** variables were extracted from the database of the Ecological-Economic Zoning of Minas *** spatial analysis,tree densities were measured at 44 georeferenced sampling *** data were subjected to exploratory analysis,variography,cross-validation,model selection,and ordinary *** relationships between wood density and environmental variables were calculated using dispersion matrices,linear correlation,and *** density proved to be highly spatially dependent,reaching a correlation of 96%,and was highly continuous over a distance of 228 *** distribution of wood density followed a continuous gradient of 514-659 kg m^(−3),enabling corre-lation with environment *** was correlated with mean annual precipitation(−0.57),temperature(0.63),and evapotranspiration(0.83).Geostatistical methods proved useful in predicting wood density in native tropical forests with different climate *** results confirmed the sensitivity of wood density to climate change,which could affect future carbon stock in forests.
