Assessment of Present and Future Radioactive Contamination at Global Scale

As a result of more than two thousand nuclear tests performed since 1945, two war actions and few accidents in nuclear reactor, it does already exist a radioactive contamination at global scale. This contamination has been accumulated mainly in marine sediments, because sea is about 80% of planet surface, and solid fission products released by nuclear explosions are transported by wind first and then by rain to liquid and solid portions on earth, while gaseous fission products are diffused in the atmosphere. In this way, heavy, high yielding fission products, such as 137Cs, get marine sediments, where they are found mixed with heavy radioactive natural elements such as U, Th and their also radioactive decay products. But since alkaline are so abundant on earth, it is also found natural radioactive isotope 4~K, 0.0118% of isotopes forming K element, with half life 1.28 ~ l09, in the time range of planet age and elements origin. So, one easy way to assess both the importance and evaluation of radioactive contamination at global scale should be to establish a RCF （radioactive contamination factor） as a percentage of 137Cs contaminant radioactivity in marine sediments, compared to 4~K natural radioactivity present from the very beginning of earth, both expressed as Bq per gram of sediment. In the frame of these rather general considerations, a research project has started in Mexico whose varied purposes are： to characterize sea regions in both vast littorals in the country, by its natural 4~K radioactivity present in sea salts, as well as to determine if 137Cs traces produced by recent radioactive contamination have reached their coasts. Also, to assess the 137Cs traces already present in marine sediments as a result of more than two thousand nuclear test explosions performed till now, rather than contamination produced by four main accidents in nuclear reactors during the last 60 years. Effect of Castration on Sensorial and Instrumental Characteristics of Longissimus Dorsi Muscle （LDM） of Brahman Cattle

This study aimed to investigate the effect of castration on the sensory and instrumental qualities of the longisssimus dorsi muscle of Brahman. Fifty animals （25 Brahman castrated and 25 uncastrated） were fed with forage and finished with forage and a commercial feed. The sensory analysis was performed by a seven-member sensory panel that had been trained. The panel evaluated the juiciness, myofibril tenderness, overall tenderness, connective tissue amount and flavor intensity of each sample according to an 8-point scale. The steaks that were to be used in the instrumental analysis were frozen, thawed, and cooked just like those used in the sensory analysis test. In order to assess shear force, the steaks were cooled 2 h at room temperature. Each strip was sheared once with a Warner-Bratzler ceil, and an average shear force value was calculated and recorded for each steak. Water retention capacity was measured as weight loss during cooking. Steaks used for shear force analysis were weighted before and after cooking. Significant differences were observed （P 〈 0.05） among sensory attributes, shear force, and cooking loss values in the beef of castrated and uncastrated. Both the panel and the consumers were able to detect differences in sensory characteristics between castrated and uncastrated, with the ratings favoring the castrated. The Warner-Bratzler device was also able to detect differences in tenderness between both groups, with steer beef having lower shear force and cooking loss values.

In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that noncoding RNAs(ncRNA) are of crucial importance for human cancer. The functional relevance of ncRNAs is particularly evident for microRNAs(miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs). miRNAs are endogenously expressed small RNA sequences that act as post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression and have been extensively studied for their roles in cancers, whereas lncRNAs are emerging as important players in the cancer paradigm in recent years. These noncoding genes are often aberrantly expressed in a variety of human cancers. However, the biological functions of most ncRNAs remain largely unknown. Recently, evidence has begun to accumulate describing how ncRNAs are dysregulated in cancer and cancer stem cells, a subset of cancer cells harboring self-renewal and differentiation capacities. These studies provide insight into the functional roles that ncRNAs play in tumor initiation, progression, and resistance to therapies, and they suggest ncRNAs as attractive therapeutic targets and potentially useful diagnostic tools.

Spontaneous regression of pancreatic cancer: Real or a misdiagnosis?

Spontaneous tumor regression has been subject of numerous studies and speculations for many years. This phenomenon is exceptional, but well reported, in some types of tumors, but not in pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer has the worst five-year survival rate of any cancer. Despite numerous molecular studies and clinical approaches, using several mouse models, this cancer responds poorly to the existing chemotherapeutic agents and progress on treatment remains elusive. Although pancreatic cancer tumors seldom undergo spontaneous regression, and some authors take that with skepticism, there are some cases reported in the literature. However, the variability in the description of the reports and technical details could make this process susceptible to misdiagnosis. Distinguishing between different types of pancreatic carcinoma should be taken with caution as they have wide differences in malignant potential. Diseases such as pancreatic benign tumors, insulinomas, or autoimmune pancreatitis could be responsible for this misdiagnosis as a pancreatic cancer. Here we review different cases reported, their clinical characteristics, and possible mechanisms leading to spontaneous regression of pancreatic cancer. We also discuss the possibilities of misdiagnosis.

CLT Fabricated with Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis Wood from Fast-Growth Forest Plantations: Physical and Mechanical Properties

Fabrication and use of Cross Laminated Timber(CLT)using tropical woods is still limited at *** objective of the present study aims to determine the possibility of using CLT panels of 3 and 5 layers,fabricated withTectona grandis and Gmelina arborea wood using adhesive of isocyanate polymer emulsion system catalyzed with polymeric ***,water absorption,density,flexure test,compression and glue-line shear were evaluated using ANSI/APA PRG320-2012 ASTM D198 and ASTM D4761 *** results showed that CLT panels of *** presented higher values of density,less water absorption and lower delamination,with no evident differences between the CLT of 3 and 5 *** high density of *** resulted in higher values of the mechanical *** flatwise and edgewise flexure tests in 5-layer CLT panels of both species pre-sented higher values of bending stiffness compared to those of 3-layer CLT *** the bending stress values in 3-layer CLT panels were higher than for 5-layer CLT *** for shear stress in bending flatwise,in both species,3-layer CLT surpassed 5-layer CLT panels,but in the edgewise test no differences were *** MOE and Fc in the compression test were superior in relation to the edgewise *** and Fc in compres-sion flatwise in 3-layer CLT was greater than in 5-layer CLT in both species,but edgewise these values were higher in 5-layer CLT *** most common failures were stress and delamination in the flexure test,whereas in the compression test these were:shearing,splitting and *** the glue-line shear test no differences were observed between CLT panels of 3 and 5 layers for both species.

Optimal thermoelectric figure of merit of Si/Ge core-shell nanowires

We investigate the thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency of Si and Ge nanowires, and in particular, that of Si/Ge core-shell nanowires. We show how the presence of a thin Ge shell on a Si core nanowire increases the overall figure of merit. We find the optimal thickness of the Ge shell to provide the largest figure of merit for the devices. We also consider Ge core/Si shell nanowires, and show that an optimal thickness of the Si shell does not exist, since the figure of merit is a monotonically decreasing function of the radius of the nanowire. Finally, we verify the empirical law relating the electron energy gap to the optimal working temperature that maximizes the efficiency of the device.

AIM:To evaluate an evidence-based educational program for improving strategies for prevention of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID)-associated gastrointestinal(GI)complications. METHODS:Four hundred and fifty-six specialists replied to a questionnaire that covered issues related to NSAID-induced adverse *** also collected data from their last five consecutive patients before and after they had attended an evidence-based seminar on GI prevention strategies. RESULTS:Four hundred and forty-one of 456 specialists(96.7%)participated in the survey,and 382(83.7%)in the education-based study that recorded data from 3728 *** specialists overestimated the risk of GI complications with NSAIDs,underestimated the GI safety profile of coxibs,but were aware of the risk factors and of the current prevention *** pump inhibitors were co-prescribed with NSAIDs in>80% of patients with and without risk *** educational program had little impact on prescribing ***:Specialists are informed of advances in NSAID-associated adverse effects and have high rates of GI-prevention *** educational program did not alter these rates.

Objective To determine whether topical applications of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum extract(TASE)can accelerate acute cutaneous wound healing(WH)in a murine *** Keratinocyte viability and in vitro wound closure were assessed in keratinocyte *** of topical TASE(0.5μg/mL of allicin in 97%ethanol)on acute cutaneous WH were determined in a murine model of acute cutaneous *** mice were alternately assigned to the vehicle-and TASE-treated groups(n=6 per group).Expression levels of mRNA for keratinocyte differentiation marker-related proteins(filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin)and lipid synthetic enzymes(elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 4(ELOVL4),fatty acid synthase(FA2H),3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase(HMGCoA),and serine palmitoyltransferase(SPT))were assessed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction on day 3 and 8 after wounding,while transepidermal water loss(TEWL)rates were measured in wounded *** TASE accelerated WH both in vivo(40%vs.22%reduction in wound area,P<0.01)and in vitro(90%vs.65%reduction in wound area,P<0.01).Moreover,topical applications of TASE upregulated the expression levels of epidermal mRNA for ELOVL4,HMGCoA,SPT,filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin(P<0.05 ***-treated controls)on day 3 after ***,TASE significantly lowered TEWL rates in comparison with vehicle alone on day 8(33.06±2.09 g/(m^2·h)vs.24.60±2.04 g/(m^2·h),P<0.01).Conclusions Topical applications of TASE stimulated keratinocyte proliferation and formation of epidermal permeability barrier function,leading to acceleration of acute cutaneous *** products containing TASE could be used to manage acute cutaneous WH.

Genetic Stability of Cryopreserved Grapevine （Wtis vinifera L.） Genome by Vitrification Method

Grapevine （Vitis spp.） is an economically important fruit crop worldwide. In Mexico, Sonora State leads the table grape production and exportation to international markets. In this regard, it is important to preserve the grape varieties during long time without phenotypical or genotypical changes. Cryopreservation is a good alternative, although it very often can induce changes in genome and phenotype. In this study, grapevine cv. ＂Flame Seedless＂ axillary buds were cryoprcserved by vitrification using the plant vitrification solution 2 （PVS2） and stored in liquid nitrogen （LN） for one hour, one week and one month, respectively. Genetic stability of buds cryopreserved under all treatments was evaluated using inter-simple sequence repeats （ISSR） markers. Ten ISSR primers were evaluated, but only two primers were possible to amplify distinct and reproducible bands with sizes between 300 bp and 2,000 bp. Different ISSR fragment patterns were recorded in cryopreserved buds as compared with control. These results suggest that cryopreservation by LN and vitrification-cryopreservation affect genetic stability in grapevine.

Image Fusion Based on NSCT and Sparse Representation for Remote Sensing Data

The practice of integrating images from two or more sensors collected from the same area or object is known as image *** goal is to extract more spatial and spectral information from the resulting fused image than from the component *** images must be fused to improve the spatial and spectral quality of both panchromatic and multispectral *** study provides a novel picture fusion technique that employs L0 smoothening Filter,Non-subsampled Contour let Transform(NSCT)and Sparse Representation(SR)followed by the Max absolute rule(MAR).The fusion approach is as follows:first,the multispectral and panchromatic images are divided into lower and higher frequency components using the L0 smoothing *** comes the fusion process,which uses an approach that combines NSCT and SR to fuse low frequency ***,the Max-absolute fusion rule is used to merge high frequency ***,the final image is obtained through the disintegration of fused low and high frequency *** terms of correlation coefficient,Entropy,spatial frequency,and fusion mutual information,our method outperforms other methods in terms of image quality enhancement and visual evaluation.
