Parallel personal measurements of diesel engine exhaust and crystalline silica using dual sampling port

Diesel engine exhaust(DEE) and crystalline silica exposures occur simultaneously in the mining industry,and occupational sampling campaigns can be time-and cost-consuming. The authors evaluated a dualport system for simultaneous sampling of DEE and crystalline silica in laboratory and field *** tests evaluated the operation of pumps during 8 h sampling and the intensity of the flow variation for various filter loading conditions and for different modes of operation. Field validation was performed in an underground mine. Pumps operated in constant flow or constant pressure *** in constant flow mode showed that when the flowrate increased on one side of the system, it decreased on the opposite side according to the loading intensity. Tests in constant pressure mode showed that flowrates systematically decreased when using loaded cassettes. However, the higher the backpressure setting, the lower the flow variation was. Flow variations during field tests were generally within the acceptable ±5% range. However, significant flow variations were identified in higher concentrations. A significant negative correlation was found between flowrate variation and total carbon concentration. While the maj.rity of tests support the use of the dual-port for evaluating concomitant exposures, results highlight the possibility of filter overloading as a cause of flowrate changes.

The structure of micelles formed by two poly(oxyethylene)/poly(oxybutylene) block copolymers, E 76B 38 and E 155B 76, in n-hexane at 50 ℃ was studied by synchrotron Small Angle X-ray Scattering(SAXS) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering(WAXS). Spherical micelle with a crystalline core was observed for E 155B 76. E 76B 38 also formed spherical micelles, but the core was amorphous. The radius of the core(R), the length of the amorphous chain in the shell(L) and the number of association(N) were obtained by fitting the SAXS data with the model of a spherical core attached with Gaussian chains. The result showed that the E block exhibited multiple folds. The B block tended to be more coiled and the area occupied by per chain was larger in the micelles of E 155B 76, which are favorable to the formation of spherical micelles.

Background:The vocalizations of birds are dynamic traits that often vary in output with time of day and time of *** quantifying patterns of diel and seasonal variation in vocal output,we can gain insight into the ecology and evolution of birds and the function of their *** this investigation,we quantified diel and seasonal variation in song output by studying a breeding population of Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis).Methods:We used autonomous recorders to collect extensive recordings across the breeding season in a long-term, colour-marked study population of Savannah Sparrows in eastern *** described diel and seasonal variation across five different breeding stages based on recordings of more than 50,000 songs from 34 ***:During the pre-breeding stage, prior to female arrival, males sang a pronounced dawn chorus with a peak in song output during the early *** the breeding stage,in contrast,the dawn chorus was diminished and males instead exhibited a pronounced dusk chorus with a peak in song output during the *** the breeding season,the highest levels of song output occurred in late April and early May,soon after males arrived on the breeding grounds,and the lowest levels occurred in August,prior to the departure of birds for the wintering ***:These patterns suggest that Savannah Sparrows' early-season dawn choruses are directed at males and serve a territorial defense ***-season dusk choruses,in contrast, appear to play a role in attracting mates and possibly acoustic mate guarding.

Delayed treatment of secondary degeneration following acute optic nerve transection using a combination of ion channel inhibitors

Studies have shown that a combined application of several ion channel inhibitors immediately after central nervous system inj.ry can inhibit secondary degeneration. However, for clinical use, it is necessary to determine how long after inj.ry the combined treatment of several ion channel inhibitors can be delayed and efficacy maintained. In this study, we delivered Ca^2＋ entry-inhibiting P2X7 receptor antagonist oxidized-ATP and AMPA receptor antagonist YM872 to the optic nerve inj.ry site via an iPRECIO-@ pump immediately, 6 hours, 24 hours and 7 days after partial optic nerve transection surgery. In addition, all of the ion channel inhibitor treated rats were administered with calcium channel antagonist lomerizine hydrochloride. It is important to note that as a result of implantation of the particular pumps required for programmable delivery of therapeutics directly to the inj.ry site, seromas occurred in a significant proportion of animals, indicating infection around the pumps in these animals. Improvements in visual function were observed only when treatment was delayed by 6 hours; phosphorylated Tau was reduced when treatment was delayed by 24 hours or 7 days. Improvements in structure of node/paranode of Ranvier and reductions in oxidative stress indicators were also only observed when treatment was delayed for 6 hours, 24 hours, or 7 days. Benefits of ion channel inhibitors were only observed with time-delayed treatment, suggesting that delayed therapy of Ca^2＋ ion channel inhibitors produces better neuroprotective effects on secondary degeneration, at least in the presence of seromas.

The nest environment may limit the ability of nest-bound birds to hear sounds from the outside *** vocal learning species,such as humans and songbirds,it is vital for young animals to hear the voices of conspecific animals early in *** songbirds,nest structure varies considerably across species,and the resulting impact on sound transmission may have consequences for vocal learning in *** this study,we tested the hypothesis that the nest environment attenuates song of Savannah Sparrows(Passerculus sandwichensis),grassland songbirds that build nests on the ground under cover of dense *** recorded live Savannah Sparrows singing at variable distances from 21 *** recorded songs using one microphone inside the nest(the typical position of a nestling)and another placed 1 m directly above the nest(a typical position of an adult).We found a substantial reduction in signal-to-noise ratio,where songs recorded inside the nest were an average of 11 dB lower than songs recorded directly above the *** estimate that the attenuation imposed by the nest reduced the maximum acoustic environment from 117.7 m(for recordings above the nest),to 78.6 m(for recordings within the nest),which is analogous to listening from a position 39.1 m farther away from the *** research estimated that song transmits up to 100 m in this species,so any adult male within 100 m of a young bird was previously considered a potential vocal *** reducing the nestling acoustic environment from 100 m to 78.6 m,the number of male tutors available to nestlings is reduced by an average of 27%.Given the growing evidence that song learning begins very early in life,future research on vocal development should account for how the structural properties of the natal environment affect the songs that nestlings hear.

Remote sensing is used in the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) across the full spectrum of the organization’s teaching and research initiatives. From undergraduate to graduate classes that utilize unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in data collection and graduate courses that incorporate remote sensing for a variety of applications, including Earth observation, to applied research via the Human Security and Geospatial Intelligence (HSGI) Lab proj.cts and work being done with One World Terrain (OWT) at the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) to build a fully geo-referenced 3D planetary model, SSI recognizes the need to educate students about remote sensing techniques. This paper discusses faculty involvement in conducting a pilot study for the Catalina Island Conservancy (CIC) using UAS to survey local bison and deer populations. The team utilized an autonomous fixed-wing UAS with a thermal payload to collect data for a semi-automated detection workflow integrated within a GIS successfully identifying both deer and bison. Additionally, graduate students participate in a weeklong experiential learning opportunity on Catalina Island, CA during which they develop and conduct a research proj.ct integrating UAS and other remotely sensed data with primary data collection in a Geographic Information System (GIS). By extension, the Institute then reinforces that these educational opportunities, focused primarily on data acquisition, are instrumental in supporting the geographic information systems, science, and technology experiences in many diverse fields, including (but not limited to) human security, humanitarian relief, sustainable urban and rural planning, and public health.

In this work,we present a significant step toward in vivo ophthalmic optical coherence tomography and angiography on a photonic integrated *** diffraction gratings used in spectral-domain optical coherence tomography can be replaced by photonic integrated circuits comprising an arrayed waveguide *** arrayed waveguide grating designs with 256 channels were tested,which enabled the first chip-based optical coherence tomography and angiography in vivo three-dimensional human retinal *** 1 supports a bandwidth of 22nm,with which a sensitivity of up to 91 dB(830μW) and an axial resolution of 10.7 pm was *** 2 supports a bandwidth of 48 nm,with which a sensitivity of 90 dB(480μW) and an axial resolution of 6.5μm was *** silicon nitride-based integrated optical waveguides were fabricated with a fully CMOS-compatible process,which allows their monolithic co-integration on top of an optoelectronic silicon *** a benchmark for chip-based optical coherence tomography,tomograms generated by a commercially available clinical spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system were compared to those acquired with on-chip *** similarities in the tomograms demonstrate the significant clinical potential for further integration of optical coherence tomography on a chip system.
