The pesticide atrazine,its degradation products,and 2,6-dichlorobenzamide（BAM） are persistent in groundwater *** studied whether their dissipation can be enhanced with a mixture of a complex carbon source and zero-valent iron（ZVI） called EhC.The application rates were 1.0% and 2.0%（by weight） in subsurface sediments slurries（atrazine 30 mg/L）,and 2.0% in 1.5 m pilot-scale sediment columns with groundwater flowing through（atrazine 0.08,desethylatrazine DEA 0.03,BAM 0.02 μg/L）.In the slurries under aerobic conditions,atrazine of 0.88 ± 0.14 mg/g of EhC was dissipated chemically,as concentrations did not differ significantly between the slurries and their sterilized *** degradation occurred in the slurries under anaerobic *** the pilot-scale columns under water-saturated conditions,atrazine,DEA and BAM were not detected in effluents during 33,64 and 64 days from the beginning of the water flow through EhC columns,respectively,but thereafter traces of compounds could be *** atrazine or degradation products（BAM,DEA,deisopropylatrazine,desethyldeisopropylatrazine） could be extracted from the column sediments at the end of the *** a result,the sum of dissipated pesticides was about7.6 μg/g of EhC in columns under water-saturated conditions,and 0.88 mg/g of EhC in slurries under aerobic *** can be used to enhance the dissipation of studied pesticides in small quantities,preferentially under aerobic conditions.

Radionuclides, like radioiodine（^129I）, may escape deep geological nuclear waste repositories and migrate to the surface ecosystems. In surface ecosystems, microorganisms can affect their movement. Iodide uptake of six bacterial strains belonging to the genera Paenibacillus,Pseudomonas, Burkholderia and Rhodococcus isolated from an acidic boreal nutrient-poor bog was tested. The tests were run in four different growth media at three temperatures. All bacterial strains removed iodide from the solution with the highest efficiency shown by one of the Paenibacillus strains with 〉 99% of iodide removed from the solution in one of the used growth media. Pseudomonas, Rhodococcus and one of the two Paenibacillus strains showed highest iodide uptake in 1% yeast extract with maximum values for the distribution coefficient（Kd） ranging from 90 to 270 L/kg DW. The Burkholderia strain showed highest uptake in 1% Tryptone（maximum Kd170 L/kg DW）. The Paenibacillus strain V0-1-LW showed exceptionally high uptake in 0.5% peptone ＋ 0.25% yeast extract broth（maximum Kd〉 1,000,000 L/kg DW）. Addition of 0.1% glucose to the 0.5% peptone ＋ 0.25% yeast extract broth reduced iodide uptake at 4℃ and 20℃ and enhanced iodide uptake at 37℃ compared to the uptake without glucose. This indicates that the uptake of glucose and iodide may be competing processes in these bacteria. We estimated that in in situ conditions of the bog,the bacterial uptake of iodide accounts for approximately 0.1%–0.3% of the total sorption of iodide in the surface, subsurface peat, gyttja and clay layers.

AIM： To investigate whether birch pollen allergy symptoms are linked with gut microbiota changes and whether probiotics have an effect on these. METhODs： Forty seven children with confirmed birch pollen allergy were randomized to receive either a probiotic combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus （L. acidophilus） NCFM^TM （ATCC 700396） and Bifidobacterium lactis （B. lactis） BI-04 （ATCC sD5219） or placebo in a double-blind manner for 4 mo, starting prior to onset of the birch pollen season. symptoms were recorded in a diary. Blood samples were taken for analysis of cytokines and eosinophils. Fecal samples were analysed for microbiota components, calprotectin and IgA. Nasal swabs were taken for analysis of eosinophils.REsULTs： The pollen season induced a reduction in Bifldobacterium , Clostridium and Bacteroides which could not be prevented by the probiotic intervention. During the intervention, significantly higher numbers ofB. lactis 11.2 × 10^7 ± 4.2 ×10^7 vs 0.1 × 10^7 ± 0.1 × 10^7 bacteria/g feces （P 〈 0.0001） and L. acidophilus NCFMTM 3.5 × 10^6 ± 1.3 × 10^6 vs 0.2 × 10^6 ±0.1 × 10^6 bacteria/g feces （P 〈 0.0001） were observed in the probiotic group compared to the placebo *** May, there was a tendency for fewer subjects, （76.2% vs 95.2%, P = 0.078） to report runny nose, while during June, fewer subjects, 11.1% vs 33.3%, reported nasal blocking in the probiotics group （P = 0.101）. Concomitantly, fewer subjects in the probiotic group had infiltration of eosinophils in the nasal mucosa compared to the placebo group, 57.1% vs 95% （P = 0.013）. Eye symptoms tended to be slightly more frequent in the probiotic group, 12.5 d [interquartile range （IQR） 6-18] vs 7.5 d （IQR 0-11.5）（P = 0.066） during May. Fecal IgA was increased in the placebo group during the pollen season; this increase was prevented by the probiotics （P = 0.028）. AIM:To investigate the association between serum antibody levels and a subsequent celiac disease diag-nosis in a large series of children and adults. METhODs:Besides subjects with classical gastrointestinal presentation of celiac disease,the study cohort included a substantial number of individuals with extraintestinal symptoms and those found by screening in at-risk *** 405 patients underwent clinical,serological and histological *** collection of data,the antibody values were further graded as low[endomysial(EmA)1:5-200,transglutaminase 2 antibodies(TG2-ab)5.0-30.0 U/L]and high (EmA 1:≥500,TG2-ab≥30.0 U/L),and the serological results were compared with the small intestinal mucosal histology and clinical presentation. REsULTs:In total,79%of the subjects with low and 94%of those with high serum EmA titers showed small-bowel mucosal villous ***, 96%of the 47 EmA positive subjects who had normal mucosal villi and remained on follow-up either subsequently developed mucosal atrophy while on a glutencontaining diet,or responded positively to a glutenfree diet. CONCLUsION:Irrespective of the initial serum titers or clinical presentation,EmA positivity as such is a very strong predictor of a subsequent celiac disease diagnosis.

Background Bronchiolitis is the most common infection leading to hospitalization in infancy. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, and in our previous study, IL10 gene rs1800896 (-1082A/G) polymorphism was associated with viral etiology of infant bronchiolitis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between IL10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (sNPs) at rs1800890 (-3575A/T), rs1800871 (-819C/T) or rs1800872 (-592C/A) either alone or combined with the sNP at rs1800896 (-1082G/A), and the etiology and severity of infant bronchiolitis. Methods Data on four IL10 sNPs were available from 135 full-term infants, hospitalized for bronchiolitis at age less than 6 months, and from 378 to 400 controls. Viral etiology was studied, and oxygen support, feeding support and the length of stay in hospital were recorded during bronchiolitis hospitalization. Results Infants with rhinovirus bronchiolitis had the IL10 rs1800890 variant AT or TT genotype less often (18.2%) than controls (63.3%, P=0.03), and likewise, had the IL10 rs1800896 variant AG or GG genotype less often (27.3%) than con-trols (65.5%, P=0.009). Twenty-eight infants with bronchiolitis had the variant–variant Grs1800896Trs1800890 haplotype, and none of them had rhinovirus infection. The IL10 rs1800871 or rs1800872 genotypes showed no associations with viruses. No association was found between any genotypes and bronchiolitis severity measures. Conclusion IL10 rs1800890 and rs1800896 polymorphisms differed between infants with rhinovirus bronchiolitis and con-trols, but not between infants with respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis and controls.
