Predictive value of NLR, Fib4, and APRI in the occurrence of liver failure after hepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),fibrosis index based on four factors(Fib4),aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index(APRI)can be used for prognostic evaluation of hepatocellular carcinoma.However,no study has established an individualized prediction model for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma based on these factors.AIM To screen the factors that affect the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and establish a nomogram model that predicts postoperative liver failure after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.METHODS In total,220 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treated in our hospital from January 2022 to January 2023 were selected.They were divided into 154 participants in the modeling cohort,and 66 in the validation cohort.Comparative analysis of the changes in NLR,Fib4,and APRI levels in 154 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma before liver resection and at 3 mo,6 mo,and 12 mo postoperatively was conducted.Binary logistic regression to analyze the influencing factors on the occurrence of liver failure in hepatocellular carcinoma patients,roadmap prediction modeling,and validation,patient work characteristic curves(ROCs)to evaluate the predictive efficacy of the model,calibration curves to assess the consistency,and decision curve analysis(DCA)to evaluate the model’s validity were also conducted.RESULTS Binary logistic regression showed that Child-Pugh grading,Surgical site,NLR,Fib4,and APRI were all risk factors for liver failure after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.The modeling cohort built a column-line graph model,and the area under the ROC curve was 0.986[95%confidence in terval(CI):0.963-1.000].The patients in the validation cohort utilized the column-line graph to predict the probability of survival in the validation cohort and plotted the ROC curve with an area under the curve of the model of 0.692(95%CI:0.548-0.837).The deviation of the actual outcome curves from the calibration curves of the column-line plots gener

Molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))has garnered significant attention in the field of catalysis due to the high density of active sites in its unique two-dimensional(2D)structure,which could be developed into numerous high-performance catalysts.The synthesis of ultra-small MoS2 particles(<10 nm)is highly desired in various experimental studies.The ultra-small structure could often lead to a distinct S-Mo coordination state and nonstoichiometric composition in MoSx,minimizing in-plane active sites of the 2D structure and making it probable to regulate the atomic and electronic structure of its intrinsic active sites on a large extent,especially in MoSx clusters.This article summarizes the recent progress of catalysis over ultra-small undoped MoS_(2) particles for renewable fuel production.Through a systematic review of their synthesis,structural,and spectral characteristics,as well as the relationship between their catalytic performance and inherent defects,we aim to provide insights into catalysis over this matrix that may potentially enable advancement in the development of high-performance MoS_(2)-based catalysts for sustainable energy generation in the future.

A series of carbon nitride(CN)materials represented by graphitic carbon nitride(g-C3N4)have been widely used in bioimaging,biosensing,and other fields in recent years due to their nontoxicity,low cost,and high luminescent quantum efficiency.What is more attractive is that the luminescent properties such as wavelength and intensity can be regulated by controlling the structure at the molecular level.Hence,it is time to summarize the related research on CN structural evolution and make a prospect on future developments.In this review,we first summarize the research history and multiple structural evolution of CN.Then,the progress of improving the luminescence performance of CN through structural evolution was discussed.Significantly,the relationship between CN structure evolution and energy conversion in the forms of photoluminescence,chemiluminescence,and electrochemiluminescence was reviewed.Finally,key challenges and opportunities such as nanoscale dispersion strategy,luminous efficiency improving methods,standardization evaluation,and macroscopic preparation of CN are highlighted.

ST-Map:an Interactive Map for Discovering Spatial and Temporal Patterns in Bibliographic Data

Getting insight into the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of knowledge innovation is receiving increasing attention from policymakers and economic research organizations.Many studies use bibliometric data to analyze the popularity of certain research topics,well-adopted methodologies,influential authors,and the interrelationships among research disciplines.However,the visual exploration of the patterns of research topics with an emphasis on their spatial and temporal distribution remains challenging.This study combined a Space-Time Cube(STC)and a 3D glyph to represent the complex multivariate bibliographic data.We further implemented a visual design by developing an interactive interface.The effectiveness,understandability,and engagement of ST-Map are evaluated by seven experts in geovisualization.The results suggest that it is promising to use three-dimensional visualization to show the overview and on-demand details on a single screen.

BACKGROUND Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy(HAIC)has been proven to be an ideal choice for treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(uHCC).HAIC-based treatment showed great potential for treating uHCC.However,large-scale studies on HAIC-based treatments and meta-analyses of first-line treatments for uHCC are lacking.AIM To investigate better first-line treatment options for uHCC and to assess the safety and efficacy of HAIC combined with angiogenesis inhibitors,programmed cell death of protein 1(PD-1)and its ligand(PD-L1)blockers(triple therapy)under real-world conditions.METHODS Several electronic databases were searched to identify eligible randomized controlled trials for this meta-analysis.Study-level pooled analyses of hazard ratios(HRs)and odds ratios(ORs)were performed.This was a retrospective single-center study involving 442 patients with uHCC who received triple therapy or angiogenesis inhibitors plus PD-1/PD-L1 blockades(AIPB)at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from January 2018 to April 2023.Propensity score matching(PSM)was performed to balance the bias between the groups.The Kaplan-Meier method and cox regression were used to analyse the survival data,and the log-rank test was used to compare the suvival time between the groups.RESULTS A total of 13 randomized controlled trials were included.HAIC alone and in combination with sorafenib were found to be effective treatments(P values for ORs:HAIC,0.95;for HRs:HAIC+sorafenib,0.04).After PSM,176 HCC patients were included in the analysis.The triple therapy group(n=88)had a longer median overall survival than the AIPB group(n=88)(31.6 months vs 14.6 months,P<0.001)and a greater incidence of adverse events(94.3%vs 75.4%,P<0.001).CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests that HAIC-based treatments are likely to be the best choice for uHCC.Our findings confirm that triple therapy is more effective for uHCC patients than AIPB.

Programmed cell death 1 ligand 1(PD-L1)is an important immunosuppressive molecule,which inhibits the function of T cells and other immune cells by binding to the receptor programmed cell death-1.The PD-L1 expression disorder plays an important role in the occurrence,development,and treatment of sepsis or other inflammatory diseases,and has become an important target for the treatment of these diseases.Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are a kind of pluripotent stem cells with multiple differentiation potential.In recent years,MSCs have been found to have a strong immunosuppressive ability and are used to treat various inflammatory insults caused by hyperimmune diseases.Moreover,PD-L1 is deeply involved in the immunosuppressive events of MSCs and plays an important role in the treatment of various diseases.In this review,we will summarize the main regulatory mechanism of PD-L1 expression,and discuss various biological functions of PD-L1 in the immune regulation of MSCs.

Hydroxyapatite/palmitic acid superhydrophobic composite coating on AZ31 magnesium alloy with both corrosion resistance and bacterial inhibition

The coating-modified magnesium(Mg)alloys exhibit controllable corrosion resistance,but the insufficient antibacterial performance limits their clinical applications as degradable implants.Superhydrophobic coatings show excellent performance in terms of both corrosion resistance and inhibition of bacterial adhesion and growth.In this work,a hydroxyapatite(HA)/palmitic acid(PA)superhydrophobic composite coating was fabricated on the Mg alloy by the hydrothermal technique and immersion treatment.The HA/PA composite coating showed superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 153°and a sliding angle of 2°.The coated Mg alloy exhibited excellent corrosion resistance in the simulated body fluid,with high polarization resistance(77.10 kΩ·cm^(2))and low corrosion current density((0.491±0.015)μA·cm^(-2)).Meanwhile,the antibacterial efficiency of the composite coating was over 98% against E.coli and S.aureus in different periods.The results indicate that the construction of such superhydrophobic composite coating(HA/PA)on the Mg alloy can greatly improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy implants within the human body and avoid bacterial infection during the initial stages of implantation.

SMAD7 expression in CAR-T cells improves persistence and safety for solid tumors

Despite the tremendous progress of chimeric antigen receptor T(CAR-T)cell therapy in hematological malignancies,their application in solid tumors has been limited largely due to T-cell exhaustion in the tumor microenvironment(TME)and systemic toxicity caused by excessive cytokine release.As a key regulator of the immunosuppressive TME,TGF-βpromotes cytokine synthesis via the NF-κB pathway.Here,we coexpressed SMAD7,a suppressor of TGF-βsignaling,with a HER2-targeted CAR in engineered T cells.These novel CAR-T cells displayed high cytolytic efficacy and were resistant to TGF-β-triggered exhaustion,which enabled sustained tumoricidal capacity after continuous antigen exposure.Moreover,SMAD7 substantially reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines by antigen-primed CAR-T cells.Mechanistically,SMAD7 downregulated TGF-βreceptor I and abrogated the interplay between the TGF-βand NF-κB pathways in CAR-T cells.As a result,these CAR-T cells persistently inhibited tumor growth and promoted the survival of tumor-challenged mice regardless of the hostile tumor microenvironment caused by a high concentration of TGF-β.SMAD7 coexpression also enhanced CAR-T-cell infiltration and persistent activation in patient-derived tumor organoids.Therefore,our study demonstrated the feasibility of SMAD7 coexpression as a novel approach to improve the efficacy and safety of CAR-T-cell therapy for solid tumors.

Groundwater serves as an important water source for residents in and around mining areas.To achieve scientific planning and efficient utilization of water resources in mining areas,it is essential to figure out the chemical formation process and the ground water sulfur cycle that transpire after the coal mining activities.Based on studies of hydrochemistry and D,^(18)O-H_(2)O,^(34)S-SO_(4)isotopes,this study applied principal component analysis,ion ratio and other methods in its attempts to reveal the hydrogeochemical action and sulfur cycle in the subsidence area of Pingyu mining area.The study discovered that,in the studied area,precipitation provides the major supply of groundwater and the main water chemistry effects are dominated by oxidation dissolution of sulfide minerals as well as the dissolution of carbonate and silicate rocks.The sulfate in groundwater primarily originates from oxidation and dissolution of sulfide minerals in coal-bearing strata and human activities.The mixed sulfate formed by the oxidation of sulfide minerals and by human activities continuously recharges the groundwater,promoting the dissolution of carbonate rock and silicate rock in the process.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2021 was awarded jointly to Syukuro Manabe,Klaus Hasselmann,and Giorgio Parisi for their groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems.This is the first time that climate scientists were awarded the Nobel Physics Prize.Here,we present the evolution of climate science in the past~200 years and highlight the landmarks of the developments in advancing our understanding of climate change,placing the pioneering contributions of Manabe and Hasselmann into a historical perspective.The backbone of modern climate science is further discussed in the context of the development of the discipline from the discovery of the greenhouse effect to the formation of Earth system science.Perspectives on the future development of climate science are also`presented.
