Boron is an important micronutrient that enhances reproductive growth of crops such as *** also plays an important role for pegging of *** has been little information on the application of boron and light in groundnut in Bangladesh.A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of boron and light on the reproductive development of two groundnut *** considered as two groundnut cultivars,viz.,‘Dhaka-1(C1)’and‘BARI Chinabadam-8(C2)’,three levels of boron(B),viz.,0-kg B ha^-1(B0),1-kg B ha^-1(B1)and 2-kg B ha^-1(B2),and two levels of light,viz.,normal day light(≈12-h light)and normal day light+6-h extended red light at night(≈18-h light).Result revealed that the reproductive development,yield and shelling percentage of groundnut were markedly increased with the application of *** to imposition of light all of reproductive units increased but decrease number of pods and pod *** highest reproductive unit and yield were observed from‘BARI Chinabadam-8’.Therefore,reproductive development could be improved by application of boron in improved cultivars(BARI Chinabadam-8)but not for under extended light.

In the present paper, different Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models were developed to model the carbon dioxide emission by using time series data of forty-four years from 1972-2015. The performance of these developed models was assessed with the help of different selection measure criteria and the model having minimum value of these criteria considered as the best forecasting model. Based on findings, it has been observed that out of different ARIMA models, ARIMA (0, 2, 1) is the best fitted model in predicting the emission of carbon dioxide in Bangladesh. Using this best fitted model, the forecasted value of carbon dioxide emission in Bangladesh, for the year 2016, 2017 and 2018 as obtained from ARIMA (0, 2, 1) was obtained as 83.94657 Metric Tons, 89.90464 Metric Tons and 96.28557 Metric Tons respectively.

Synthesis of ion imprinted polymers for selective recognition and separation of rare earth metals

Lanthanide-ion imprinted polymers（L-IIPs） were synthesized by stoichiometric amounts of rare earth ions and the cavities in the polymers were created for the corresponding lanthanide ions. The maximum sorption capacities were estimated to be 125.3, 126.5, 127.6, 128.2 and 129.1 mg/g for Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd, respectively at p H 6. In the selectivity study, the L-IIPs exhibited good selectivity to the specific rare earth ions in the presence of coexisting cations. The imprinting results were found to be excellent with some rare earth ions over other competitor rare earth ions with the same charges and close ionic radius.

Compliance of Physicians with Standard Precautions of Handling Patients with Infectious Respiratory Disease

Background: Standard precautions (SPs) are the minimum infection prevention practices that aim to protect Health care workers (HCWs) including physicians and prevent them from transmitting the infections to their patients. Purpose: To assess the level of compliance of physicians with standard precautions of handling patients with infectious respiratory disease. Method: A cross sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted in two tertiary level hospitals named M abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital, Dinajpur, Bangladesh and Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, Rajshahi, Bangladesh to assess the level of compliance of physicians with standard precautions. Purposive sampling technique was applied as per inclusion criteria and data was collected by face to face interview from 285 physicians. Statistical analysis of the results was done by SPSS and a p value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Result: The study revealed that maximum physicians (76.5%) handling patients with infectious respiratory disease had a moderate level of compliance with standard precautions. 78.6% of the physicians had moderate level of awareness about standard precautions. Only 20.35% of the physicians had training on infection control. 94.4% of the respondents didn’t know the component of standard precaution and most of the physicians were not aware of the sequence of wearing and removing the different components of PPEs. Conclusion: The study result implies that with increased awareness, the compliance of the physicians with standard precautions increased. The main reasons of non-compliance with standard precautions were found to be lack of resources, lack of regular training and excess workload.

Regional Variation of Temperature and Rainfall in Bangladesh: Estimation of Trend

This study mainly focuses on exploring the regional variation of the changing patterns of temperature and rainfall in Bangladesh. The analysis is based on the temperature and rainfall variation in Bangladesh over five regions as Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Rajshahi, Bogra and Sylhet. The duration of the study period was chosen as 1953-2012 for Dhaka, 1948-2012 for Cox’s Bazar, 1972-2012 for Rajshahi, 1958-2012 for Bogra and 1957-2012 for Sylhet. The findings of the non-parametric Mann-Kendal test reveals that significant increase of maximum temperature has been found in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. Significant decrease of maximum temperature has been found in Dhaka and Bogra. Significant increase of minimum temperature has been found in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar whereas significant decrease has been found in Rajshahi. Significant decrease of rainfall has been found in Rajshahi among the study region. The maximum temperature increases significantly by 0.021 degree Celsius per year in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. In case of minimum temperature highest increase is found in Dhaka by 0.049 degree Celsius followed by Cox’s Bazar (0.038 degree Celsius per year) whereas significant decrease has been found in Rajshahi by 0.047 degree Celsius per year.

The notion of this project is derived from our practical use of user authentication system namely Shibboleth at the University of Bedfordshire. It has been found that the University of Bedfordshire controls its various services including student portal Breo, Learning Resources and Student Email Access and others through the Shibboleth. Like the University of Bedfordshire the other Universities in the UK are also implementing the Shibboleth system in their access management control. Therefore, the researchers of this project have found it important to evaluate its efficiency and effectiveness of Shibboleth from different perspectives. In the first part of this paper it tries to explain the features of Shibboleth as SSO services and compares it with other SSO services like Athens, Kerberos, etc. Then in the middle section, the authors go through the steps of installation and configuration of the Shibboleth. In the end of the paper, based on the survey of real users of Shibboleth at the University of Bedfordshire, the authors give its insights on the effectiveness of the Shibboleth as SSO service. Throughout this investigation, the authors have applied a triangulation to find out user and service provider viewpoint about Shibboleth. Although there were some problems persisted, the authors also implemented the Shibboleth system successfully to figure out different problems, efficiency and effectiveness. The recommendations and conclusion have been provided at the end of this project.

Coastal agriculture is vulnerable to climate change, thereby may affect food production systems and food security in Bangladesh. Methane (CH4) emission from coastal wetlands rice farming is a major environmental concern due to its global warming potential. Therefore, field experiments were conducted at the southern coastal region of Shyamnagar, Satkhira, to investigate the feasibility of Rice-Shrimp and Rice-Crabs mixed farming for adaptation to the changing climate and sustaining food production system. The experimental treatments were designed on rice-based diversified farming systems such as rice sole cropping with no NPKS + no soil amendments (T1), rice sole cropping following farmers’ practice (FP) without soil amendment (T2), rice sole cropping following FP with phosphogypsum (PG) amendment (T3), Rice-Shrimp mixed culture with PG amendment (T4), Rice-Crabs mixed culture with PG amendment (T5), Rice-Shrimp mixed culture + PG amendment with Spirulina (Cyanobacteria) inoculation (T6), and Rice-Crabs mixed culture + PG amendment with Spirulina inoculation (T7). A closed chamber technique was followed to collect gas samples from the rice paddy field and samples were analyzed by Gas Chromatograph. It was found that Rice-Shrimp (T6) and Rice-Crabs mixed farming (T7) practices significantly decreased GWPs compared to the rice sole cropping system. In the dry boro season, the maximum GWPs 4175 kg CO2 eq. ha-1 was recorded from rice sole cropping (T2), which was decreased by 30% and 36.7% under Rice-Shrimp (T6) and Rice-Crabs (T7) mixed farming practices, respectively. Furthermore, in the wet aman season, maximum GWP 4525 kg CO2 eq. ha-1 was recorded from rice sole cropping (T2), which was decreased by 33.0% and 38.8% under Rice-Shrimp and Rice-Crabs mixed farming, respectively. The COOLOD-N2 and PARET computer codes were used for a steady-state thermal hydraulic and safety analysis of the 3 MW TRIGA Mark-II research reactor located at Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The objective of the present study is to ensure that all important safety related thermal hydraulic parameters uphold margins far below the safety limits by steady-state calculations at full power. We, therefore, have calculated the hot channel fuel centreline temperature, fuel surface temperature, cladding surface temperature, the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) heat flux and DNB ratio, axial fuel centreline temperature and compared. The comparison indicates that the calculated values are in satisfactory agreement between the codes. The data obtained in this investigation are largely far to compromise safety of the reactor. The results can also be used to upgrade the current core configuration of the TRIGA reactor.

Yield Gap of Stress Tolerant Rice Varieties Binadhan-10 &Binadhan-11 in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Binadhan-10 & Binadhan-11 are climate smart stress tolerant high yielding rice varieties (yield > 4 t⋅ha−1) have saline tolerant EC up to 12 ds/m and submergence tolerant up to 20 - 25 days capacity. The present study was an attempt to analyze the yield gap of stress tolerant varieties Binadhan-10 & Binadhan-11 in some selected areas of Bangladesh. The objectives of the study were: 1) to estimate the yield gap of Binadhan-10 &-11 growers among the study areas;2) to identify the factors affecting the yield of these variety;and 3) to suggest some policy guidelines to minimize the yield gap. The study was conducted in eight Binadhan-10 & Binadhan-11 growing areas in Bangladesh. In this study, four districts namely Satkhira, Khulna, Barishal, and Cox’s Bazar were used for Binadhan-10 and Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur and Sunamgonj were taken for Binadhan-11. It is based on primary level data from eight sub-districts among the study areas. A total of 240 farmers were randomly selected (30 from each location) to collect the data with a pre-designed questionnaire. Farmer were grouped according to saline affected and not-affected for saline tolerant variety Binadhan-10 and not affected, affected (1 - 10 days) and highly affected (10 - 20 days) for submergence tolerant rice variety Binadhan-11 to identify existing yield gap. Tabular as well as Zandstra method were applied for analysis the data. The study also found factors affecting the gap and some policy guidelines to minimize the gap.
