Geomorphological, Geological and Engineering Geological Aspects for Sustainable Urban Planning of Mymensingh City, Bangladesh

Geomorphological, geological and engineering geological information is used as the base data to characterize the subsurface condition and for sustainable urban planning and development of the rapidly expanding Mymensingh city. Extensive field work has been completed to get the realistic scenario, data and samples have been collected from surface and subsurface with auguring and geotechnical boring. The laboratory tests have been performed following standard laboratory procedures. Geomorphologically the area is broadly classified into Older Floodplain or Mymensingh Terrace and Younger Floodplain. These two flood plains are separated by Old Brahmaputra River. Geologically the area is mainly covered by the recent alluvial flood plain deposits which are underlain by the Pleistocene Madhupur clay deposits. The Younger Flood Plain deposit consists of mainly unconsolidated fine to medium sands with some silt and clay whereas the Older Flood Plain deposits are mainly consisting of silty clay and fine to medium sand. Moderately compacted sediments of older flood plain deposit are suitable for urban development. Based on geotechnical characteristics and the N values (blow counts of Spontaneous Penetration Test, SPT) of the subsurface sediments, the study area is classified into four Engineering Geological Units. Unit I indicates loose soil and is suitable for shallow foundation. Unit II is indicating compact soil packing;N value of these two units increase with depth and would be good for heavy foundation. Unit III is suitable for shallow structures. Unit IV, which is composed of mostly clay, silty clay and sand with highly compressive organic clay, is recommended to avoid any heavy construction and could be used as open place, water retaining zone etc. Beside the geological and engineering geological study details hydrology and hydrogeological and a systematic study on seismic hazards are strongly recommended before planning of urban area.

Fenofibrate (FF) is an anti-hyperlipidaemic drug belonging to BCS class-II (low solubility, high permeability). Its bioavailability is limited by the dissolution rate. This study was aimed to enhance the rate of dissolution of poorly water soluble drug, FF. Initially, solid dispersions of fenofibrate (SDFs) were formulated with Carplex-80 or PEG-4000 or in combination at various weight ratios and were subjected to dissolution study. On the basis of drug release at various time intervals, the formulation producing maximum drug concentration was evaluated physicochemically using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that the peak drug concentration was obtained at 120 min of dissolution by formulation SDF-7, which contains a mixture of Carplex-80 and PEG-4000 at weight ratio 1:5:6 of FF:PEG-4000:Carplex-80, respectively. Thus, the extent of drug release by SDF-7 was maximized by 2.5-fold than that of pure FF. Physicochemical characterization revealed the reason for this increased drug release as a conversion of crystalline FF to amorphous form and ensured the chemical compatibility among FF and carriers. The results specified the significant improvement of FF release using solid dispersion technique.

Over the past years a booming interest is comprehended in the field of wireless communication for the development of a monitoring system to observe human vital organs activities remotely. Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is such network that provides a continuous monitoring over or inside human body for a long period and can support transmission of real time traffic such as data, voice, video to observe the status of vital organs functionalities. In this paper an overview of WBAN technology and its requirements has been narrated. The aim of this paper was to offer a suitable and appropriate wireless technology for deploying WBAN. Several suitable short range wireless communication technologies that can be adopted in WBAN have also been discussed. Finally numerous applications in the field of medical and non-medical sectors using WBAN technology have been outlined.

In current decade, pharmaceutical industries of Bangladesh are giving much emphasize on the formulation of time release preparation to treat various chronic diseases in order to decrease the frequency of administration and to improve patient compliance. Objectives: The objective of this investigation is to design and evaluate sustained release matrix tablet of Gliclazide by direct compression method employing polymers of hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) derivatives (K15M CR and K4M CR) and to select the optimized formulations and compression process by performing a comparative release kinetic study with a reference product, Diamicron MR (one of the worldwide brand of Gliclazide sustain released tablet manufactured by Servier one of the French pharmaceutical company) tablet. Methods: Release kinetics of Gliclazide matrix tablets were determined using USP paddle method at Phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The release mechanism was explored and explained with zero order, first order, Higuchi and Korsmeyer model. Result: It is found that formulation with lower polymeric concentration follows Higuchi release kinetics and that the formulation with higher concentration best fits with zero order release kinetics. Among the formulations, F1 and F6 show almost similar dissolution profile with Diamicron MR Tablet, which can be suitable candidates for further in-vivo bioequivalence study. Conclusion: Findings of this investigation suggest that F1 and F6 formulations are potential candidates for further bioequivalence study among other formulations.

Carbon dioxide induced degradation of diethanolamine during absorption and desorption processes

Alkanolamines are widely used in the purification of the sourgas sweetening process. During the sour gas absorption process, CO_2 significantly degrades the amine solvent and creates enormous problems for plant operation. In this work, CO_2 induced degradation of aqueous diethanolamine(DEA) solution was conducted in a 1.25 L jacketed glass reactor that functioned as an absorber and stripper at atmospheric conditions. Pure CO_2 was bubbled through the reactor until the solution became saturated. In this study, the concentrations of DEA used were in the range of concentrations between 2 mol·L^(-1) and 4 mol·L^(-1). In the degradation experiment, six generic cycles were conducted for each run. Each cycle was configured with the absorption and desorption of carbon dioxide at 55 ℃ and 100 ℃, respectively. Samples were collected after a predetermined experimental time and analyzed by ion chromatography(IC) to identify unknown ionic degradation products(DGPs). In the IC analysis, three different columns were used for anion, cation and ion exclusion systems, which are Metrosep A Supp 5150/4.0, Metrosep C Supp 4 150/4.0 and Metrosep Organic Acids, respectively. The major identified DGPs of D01 DEA2 M, D02 DEA3 M, and D03 DEA4 M are nitrite, acetate and ammonium. Phosphate product was found in the degraded amine samples which might be due to the contamination of water or chromatographic system.

Among chronic pulmonary infections, pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare one, caused by a gram-positive microaerophilic bacterium called Actinomyces. Aside from cervicofacial or abdominopelvic actinomycosis, pulmonary involvement is rare, and sometimes this type of infection results in a misdiagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis or carcinoma. Clinical presentation of pulmonary actinomycosis could be acute or subacute, with lobar involvement. However, the disease is most commonly diagnosed at the chronic phase, with patients presenting mild fever, weight loss, and occasional hemoptysis. Here, we described the case of a 30-year-old male patient, presented with a history of respiratory complaints for more than three years and was diagnosed clinically and radiologically as a case of a destroyed left lung. Later on, post-operative tissue diagnosis was confirmed—pulmonary actinomycosis.
