Assessment of ecological risk for heavy metals in surface sediment of an urban river in a developing country

The speed of increasing threats to the riverine water resources makes it more critical to protect the health of Old Brahmaputra River *** current study was done to investigate the concentrations,distributions,sources,and ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment from the Old Brahmaputra River,*** were collected from seven sites and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer(ICP-MS).The results showed that mean concentrations(mg/kg) of heavy metals were in the order of nickel(Ni)(44.69)> chromium(Cr)(30.16)> lead(Pb)(19.31)>copper(Cu)(17.84)> cadmium(Cd)(3.94)> arsenic(As)(2.73).The contamination factor(CF),pollution load index(PLI),enrichment factor(EF),and geo-accumulation index(Igeo) indicated low to moderate *** unit analysis revealed that the studied metals from all stations posed low *** sediment of the study river was uncontaminated to moderately contaminated,posing a minimal ecological ***,Cr,Ni,and Pb originated from anthropogenic sources rather than geogenic sources,and caused the severity of *** this regard,pollutant-based intensive monitoring of heavy metals and holistic ecological risk assessments are required to maintain a sound and healthy aquatic environment in the river.

Improved luminescence and photocatalytic properties of Sm^(3+)-doped ZnO nanoparticles via modified sol-gel route:A unified experimental and DFT+U approach

In the current study,a modified sol-gel route was used to produce undoped and Sm^(3+)doped(1 mol%,3 mol%and 5 mol%)ZnO nanoparticles(NPs).The study of opto-structural properties of Sm^(3+)doped NPs was carried out both experimentally and *** dissolution of Sm^(3+)ions into the ZnO lattice is obviously seen from X-ray diffraction(XRD)*** evolution with doping was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)was carried out to confirm the prese nce of Sm~(3+)on the doped *** dopant quantity results in a redshift of the NPs along with a reduction in bandgap with increasing abso rption in the visible range,and a minimum of 3.18 eV of optical bandgap for Zn_(0.97)Sm_(0.03)O is *** spectroscopy reveals a drop in the recombination rate of electron-hole with increasing doping content till 3 mol%,followed by an increase of Zn_(0.95)Sm_(0.05)*** electron-hole pair recombination is revealed by the orange band in the luminescence *** analysis was also carried out with density functional theory(DFT).This work also unfolds the fundamental understanding of the structural properties of the synthesized NPs to enhance photocatalytic activity ***,photocatalytic activity for the optimum composition,i.e.,3 mol%,was assessed experimentally.

Toxicity of organophosphorus pesticide sumithion on larval stages of stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis

Sumithion is widely used to control brittle in paddy fields and tiger bug in fish larval rearing ponds. The objective of this study was to elucidate the toxic effects of sumithion on larval stages of stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis. Larvae were exposed to two concentrations(150 and 250 μg/L) of sumithion with one control in three replicates of each. Larvae samples were collected at 20- and 24-h intervals followed by observation under a digital microscope. Exposures of stinging catfish larvae to sumithion produced deformities including irregular head shape, lordosis, yolk sac edema, body arcuation, tissue ulceration, etc. The mortality rates of larvae were significantly increased in response to increase in sumithion concentrations. Furthermore, around 30% of the total adult stinging catfish reared in sumithiontreated aquaculture ponds were found to be deformed permanently. These findings highlight that exposure of stinging catfish to sumithion at the critical and sensitive stages in their life cycle may significantly reduce the number of returning adults. Therefore, the use of sumithion for crop protection needs to be considered carefully and alternatives to sumithion should to be developed for controlling aquatic insects in aqua-ponds during larval rearing.

Study on characterization of bio-oil derived from sugarcane bagasse(Saccharum barberi)for application as biofuel

Lignocellulosic biomass especially,sugarcane bagasse Saccharum barberi sp.,appears to be a more suitable material for partial substi-tution of transport fuel(diesel)than Saccharum officinarum sp.,due to its structural similarity to transport fuel(diesel).Besides that,less research has been implemented on this type of ***-oil can be implemented as biodiesel by processing it further using chemical reactions such as hydrodeoxygenation and cracking with zeolite ***,the purpose of this study is to determine the compatibility of pyrolytic bio-oil produced from Saccharum barberi *** comparison with *** *** use as transport fuel(diesel)in automotive *** purpose can be accomplished by comparing the oil’s bio-physiochemical properties for both *** experiment is conducted on a bench-scale on which bio-oil of Saccharum barberi *** secured from the catalytic pyrolysis process at a temperature of 500°C and heating rate of 50°C/min with the addition of ZSM-Zeolite *** analysis of Saccharum barberi *** that cellulose is more reactive than lignin,evidenced by the high percentage of weight loss at tem-peratures ranging from 251°C to 390°*** high contents of carbon(40.7%)and hydrogen(6.50%),as well as slight traces of sulphur(0.08%)and nitrogen(0.85%),in bio-oil(Saccharum barberi sp.)indicate that it is conceivable to be partially used for replacement in biofuel *** physiochemical properties reveal that Saccharum barberi *** more potential than *** *** chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis reveals that bio-oil consists of high amounts of aromatic hydrocarbon(26.2%),phenol(14.8%)and furfural(13.0%)in comparison to *** sp.

Correlation assessment and monitoring of the potential pollutants in the surface sediments of Pyeongchang River,Korea

The study provides a baseline for the assessment of the organic and inorganic pollution specially, heavy metal contamination in the surface sediments of Pyeongchang River,South *** assessment of the study areas was done with respect to metal pollution load,ecological risk and geoaccumulated *** upon the used indices,a priority index(P) was used to rank the utmost contaminated *** the concentrations of mercury in all sediments were below the guideline, the significant enriched contamination was observed by all applied *** expected,the values of pollution load index(PLI),ecological risk index(RI) and geoaccumulation risk index(I) demonstrated lower heavy metal contamination in upstream areas compared to the downstream. Admittedly,sediments were unpolluted to slightly-polluted according to PLI while high to extremely high ecological risks were observed in several sediment ***,all the samples were uncontaminated as per *** simplification of I,the P,showed the utmost contaminated sediments with a value of ***,protective measures should be taken to the highly contaminated areas which are prioritized by PAdmittedly,the maximum concentrations of total organic carbon,total nitrogen,inorganic nitrogen,total phosphorous,inorganic phosphorous,calcium, magnesium,sodium and potassium were significantly observed as 7.8×10~4,3,185,36,1,032,3.7, 1,5163,2,881,669 and 4,076mg/kg accordingly.

Comparative Study on Caesarian and Normal Delivery Childbirth in Bangladesh

The study is concerned with caesarian and normal delivery and its effectiveness on childbirth which has more impact on Bangladesh. We identified that, higher educated and higher income families are choosing caesarian section for childbirth because of improved safety of surgical skill to reduce the mortality rate. Although expensive, most caesarian operations are performed in private hospitals for modern medical equipment, experienced doctors and advanced medical care. A questionnaire survey design was applied in order to make a comparative study on caesarian and normal delivery childbirth. Respondents from all over Bangladesh participated in the survey. We collect 281 data from the respondents of different districts of Bangladesh by area sampling. We use descriptive and analytical research designs in determining the comparative study on caesarian and normal delivery childbirth in Bangladesh. The results of study show that the variance of children taken by caesarian delivery is less than children taken by normal delivery and children taken by caesarian delivery increase due to increased family income. It has been found that 39.5% (111) respondents are from the Urban area and 60.5% (171) from the rural zone. We can say that more than 50% of our respondents are well-educated. We also found that 53.4% of the respondents

Design of a High-Gain 2 × 1 Array Antenna for S-Band Applications

Antennas are an indispensable element in wireless networks. For long-distance wireless communication, antenna gains need to be very strong (highly directive) because the signal from the antenna loses a lot of strength as it travels over long distances. This is true in the military with missile, radar, and satellite systems, etc. Antenna arrays are commonly employed to focus electromagnetic waves in a certain direction that cannot be achieved perfectly with a single-element antenna. The goal of this study is to design a rectangular microstrip high-gain 2 × 1 array antenna using ADS Momentum. This microstrip patch array design makes use of the RT-DUROID 5880 as a substrate with a dielectric constant of 2.2, substrate height of 1.588 mm, and tangent loss of 0.001. To achieve efficient gain and return loss characteristics for the proposed array antenna, RT-Duroid is a good choice of dielectric material. The designed array antenna is made up of two rectangular patches, which have a resonance frequency of 3.3 GHz. These rectangular patches are excited by microstrip feed lines with 13 mm lengths and 4.8 mm widths. The impedance of the patches is perfectly matched by these transmission lines, which helps to get better antenna characteristics. At a resonance frequency of 3.3 GHz, the suggested antenna array has a directivity of 10.50 dB and a maximum gain of 9.90 dB in the S-band. The S parameters, 3D radiation pattern, directivity, gain, and efficiency of the constructed array antenna are all available in ADS Momentum.

Improved Car-Following Model Considering Modified Backward Optimal Velocity and Velocity Difference with Backward-Looking Effect

In this paper, a new traffic flow model called the forward-backward velocity difference (FBVD) model based on the full velocity difference model is proposed to investigate the backward-looking effect by applying a modified backward optimal velocity using generalized backward maximum speed. The FBVD model belongs to the family of microscopic models that consider spatiotemporally continuous formulations. Neutral stability conditions of the discrete car-following model are derived using the linear stability theory. The stability analysis results prove that the modified backward optimal velocity has a significant positive effect in stabilizing the traffic flow. Through nonlinear analysis, a kink-antikink solution is derived from the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation of the FBVD model to explain traffic congestion of the model. The validity of this theoretical model is checked using numerical results, according to which traffic jams were found to have been significantly diminished by the introduction of the modified backward optimal velocity.

Immunopotentiality of Ayurvedic polyherbal formulations “Saribadi” and “Anantamul Salsa” with augmentation of IgM production and lymphocytes proliferation:A preliminary study

Objective:To assess the immunopotentiality of Ayurvedic polyherbal preparations,"Saribadi" and "Anantamul Salsa".Methods: Freshly prepared BALB/c mice splenocytes were cultured with "Saribadi" or"Anantamul Salsa" treatment [doses of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.50%, 2.00%,3.00% and 4.00%(v/v)] at 37C for 5 days. The immunoglobulin M(IgM) production and lymphocytes proliferation were determined by ELISA and MTT methods, *** contamination was assessed by treating the preparations with polymyxin ***: The doses of "Saribadi" [0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.00%(v/v)] significantly increased IgM productions(0.966, 0.728, 0.695 and 0.615 mg/m L vs. control 0.265 mg/m L)and lymphocytes proliferation [absorbance 0.311, 0.394, 0.372 and 0.334 optical density(OD) vs. control 0.162 OD]. Similarly, the doses of "Anantamul Salsa" [0.50%, 0.75%,1.00% and 1.50%(v/v)] promoted IgM productions(0.933, 0.919, 0.917 and 0.892 mg/m L vs. control 0.502 mg/m L) and the doses of "Anantamul Salsa" [0.50%, 0.75%, 1.00%,1.50%, 2.00%, and 3.00%(v/v)] stimulated lymphocytes proliferation(absorbance 0.395,0.326, 0.440, 0.398, 0.452 and 0.355 OD vs. control 0.199 OD). The activity of "Saribadi"and "Anantamul Salsa" was not retarded by the treatment of preparations with polymyxin ***: Immunomodulatory activity of "Saribadi" and "Anantamul Salsa" was unveiled for the first time. "Saribadi" and "Anantamul Salsa" possess immunostimulating potential acting through the induction of lymphocyte proliferation and IgM *** preparations may be useful in strengthening immune responses. However, further cellular and in vivo studies are required.
