Chronic liver diseases(CLds)are becoming increasingly more prevalent in modern *** use of imaging techniques for early detection,such as magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),is crucial in reducing the impact of these diseases on healthcare *** intelligence(AI)algorithms have been shown over the past decade to excel at image-based analysis tasks such as detection and *** applied to liver MRI,they have the potential to improve clinical decision making,and increase throughput by automating *** Liver diseases becoming more prevalent in society,the need to implement these techniques to utilize liver MRI to its full potential,is *** this review,we report on the current methods and applications of AI methods in liver MRI,with a focus on machine learning and deep learning *** assess four main themes of segmentation,classification,image synthesis and artefact detection,and their respective potential in liver MRI and the wider *** provide a brief explanation of some of the algorithms used and explore the current challenges affecting the *** there are many hurdles to overcome in implementing AI methods in the clinic,we conclude that AI methods have the potential to positively aid healthcare professionals for years to come.

Exploring effects of property variation on fragmentation of metal rings using a simple model

This paper aims to create visible light driven ternary photocatalysts using zinc oxide(ZnO),cerium(IV)oxide(CeO_(2)),and carbon xerogel(CX) as constituent *** use of CeO_(2) is based on the creation of direct-Z-scheme heterojunctions with the ZnO and the consequent diminishing of charge recombination,whereas the carbon xerogel inclusion is predicted to minimize bandgap energy,decrease electro n-hole reco mbination,and boost specific surface *** re,the choice of the black-wattle tannin as a carbonaceous precursor was targeted at the development of an environmentally friendly and affordable *** existence of the hexagonal phase of zinc oxide and cubic structure of the cerium(IV) oxide in the ternary material was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,with the latter also suggesting chemical bonding between the ZnO and the CX due to the creation of zinc oxycarbide *** inclusion of the carbon xerogel provokes a significant modification in the morphology of the ternary material,resulting in an increased surface area and smaller particle *** CX/ZnO-CeO_(2) ternary composite obtains the highest photocatalytic efficiency among all the materials studied,degrading 100% of 4-chlorophenol under simulated sunlight and 68% under visible radiation,after 5 *** increased photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between the semiconductors,higher visible light response,and higher specific surface area,as evidenced by the results obtained by active radical scavenging,chronoamperometry,diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,and N_(2) adsorption-desorption isotherms.

Autumn sunlight promotes aboveground carbon loss in a temperate mixed forest

Background Photodegradation of plant litter plays a pivotal role in the global carbon(C) cycle. In temperate forest ecosystems, the exposure of plant litter to solar radiation can be significantly altered by changes in autumn phenol-ogy and snow cover due to climatic change. How this will affect litter decomposition and nutrient dynamic interact-ing with forest canopy structure(understorey vs. gaps) is uncertain. In the present study, we conducted a field experi-ment using leaf litter of early-fall deciduous Betula platyphylla(Asian white birch) and late-fall deciduous Quercus mongolica(Mongolian oak) to explore the effect of change in autumn solar radiation on dynamics of litter decompo-sition in a gap and understorey of a temperate mixed *** Exposure to the full-spectrum of not only significantly increased the loss of mass, C, and lignin, but also mod-ified N loss through both immobilization and mineralization during the initial decomposition during autumn canopy opening, irrespective of canopy structure and litter species. These effects were mainly driven by the blue-green spectral region of sunlight. Short-term photodegradation by autumn solar radiation had a positive legacy effect on the later decomposition particularly in the forest gap, increasing mass loss by 16% and 19% for Asian white birch and Mongolia oak, *** Our results suggest that earlier autumn leaf-fall phenology and/or later snow cover due to land-use or climate change would increase the exposure of plant organic matter to solar radiation, and accelerate ecosys-tem processes, C and nutrient cycling in temperate forest ecosystems. The study provides a reference for predictive research on carbon cycling under the background of global climate change.

Can hydraulic-energy-indices be effectively used to describe the saturated hydraulic conductivity?

The saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks)and water retention curve(SWRC)parameters are important properties for simulating soil hydrological processes and characterizing soil conservation around the ***,Ks and SWRC are related with the soil physical quality(SPQ)and several SPQ indices can be derived from SWRC,such as the pore size distribution,relative field capacity,plant available water,drainable porosity,and soil hydraulic-energy indices(SHEI).It is well known that the soil structure can be assessed by using SHEI,but a possible physical relationship between Ks and SHEI was not examined ***,the objective of this study was to investigate the behavior of Ks as function of SHEI for several soil textural *** this relationship be proved,then SHEI might be applied to improve the Ks prediction by PTF *** this work,a data set of 395 measured SWRC's were fitted to the vG equation to obtain the SHEI to verify whether they are statistically correlated and physically dependent on *** resulting parametric and non-parametric correlation results were split up according to six textural *** significant influence of Ks on at least one of the absolute SHEI(Aa or WRa)was verified on the numerical scale when all textures were grouped and on numerical and pF scales for clayey and silty *** showed significant impact on Aa and WRa indices in four textural ***,Ks had influence on the sum Aa+WRa denoted in pF scale for five of the six textural classes,with a significant linear correlation in the clayey texture when log(Aa+WRa)was *** significant and high cor-relation of Ks on the ratios WRa/AWC and Aa/φd was also observed in four of the six classes,and therefore the use of these indices is recommended for the development of PTFs for Ks prediction.

Amphibians show a variety of reproductive modes and strategies. The cyclicity and continuity of reproduction can often be predicted from the annual gonadosomatic index trends in a species specific manner. This research aims to document the female and male gonadosomatic index profiles and to ascertain the reproductive cyclicity or continuity of Fejervarya lirnnocharis （Anura： Ranidae） caught in Mac Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. Frogs were collected monthly between November 2007 and October 2009 in rice fields and their surrounding areas in the study site. For each frog, total weight and ovarian/testicular weight were measured to obtain the female and male gonadosomatic index. The number of female individuals with mature eggs （postvitellogenic eggs） was also counted. The results showed that female frogs had two main surges of increased GSI in March and September of 2008. Alternatively, male frogs showed a more gradual increase and decrease in gonadosomatic index, thus the index remaining high throughout the year. This study concluded that while F. limnocharis in this area is essentially a continuous breeder, it is more optimized for a cyclic reproduction mode with two breeding cycles during the rainy season.

Molecular discrimination of Wild Philippine Paddy Straw Mushroom （ Volvariella volvacea）

Genetic diversity study of wild Philippine paddy straw mushroom （Volvariella volvacea） was conducted to establish a germplasm collection accessible to volvariella producers in the Philippines. Forty one wild strains were collected from different geographical areas in Northern and Central Luzon region. Strains were differentiated using random amplified polymorphic dNA （RAPd）. A single 10-based primer was used to generate randomly amplified polymorphic dNA （RAPd） in V. volvacea and differences were noted in band size （bp） ranging from 1,800 bp to 550 bp. Principal component analysis （PCA） of the RAPd data revealed 4 groups from wild strains. One strain showed RAPd pattern with band appearance at 1,750, 950 and 750 bp; 3 strains at 1,800 and 750 bp; 8 strains at 1,500 and 550; and the most abundant group with 29 strains at 750 bp. With observed lack of heterogeneity among strains, it is recommended that more collections from the wild should be undertaken for more diverse germplasm collection. Moreover, it is suggested that RAPd can be used to delineate strains of V. volvacea with potential importance on genetic diversity conservation and breeding.
