Environmental sampling of volatile organic compounds during the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California

Trace analysis of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) during wildfires is imperative for environmental and health risk assessment. The use of gas sampling devices mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) to chemically sample air during wildfires is of great interest because these devices move freely about their environment, allowing for more representative air samples and the ability to sample areas dangerous or unreachable by humans. This work presents chemical data from air samples obtained in Davis, CA during the most destructive wildfire in California's history-the 2018 Camp Fire – as well as the deployment of our sampling device during a controlled experimental fire while fixed to a UAV. The sampling mechanism was an in-house manufactured micro-gas preconcentrator(μPC) embedded onto a compact battery-operated sampler that was returned to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Compounds commonly observed in wildfires were detected during the Camp Fire using gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC–Ms), including BTEX(benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m + p-xylene, and o-xylene), benzaldehyde, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, naphthalene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene and 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene. Concentrations of BTEX were calculated and we observed that benzene and toluene were highest with average concentrations of 4.7 and 15.1 μg/m^(3), respectively. Numerous fire-related compounds including BTEX and aldehydes such as octanal and nonanal were detected upon experimental fire ignition, even at a much smaller sampling time compared to samples taken during the Camp Fire. Analysis of the air samples taken both stationary during the Camp Fire and mobile during an experimental fire show the successful operation of our sampler in a fire environment.

Co?firing biomass with coal is becoming increasingly important in power plants as it produces less net CO2 emissions. The use of biomass, however, can result in severe fireside corrosion of heat transfer surfaces and cause unexpected early failures of heat exchangers, which can lead to significant economic penalties. Predicting the remaining service life of the heat exchangers in coal?biomass fired power plants is therefore an important aspect of managing such power plants. The path to this type of failures of heat exchangers is made up of five sub?processes: combustion, deposition, fireside corrosion, steam?side oxidation, and creep. Models for each of these sub?processes are available from existing research, but to fully understand the impact of new fuel mixes（i.e. biomass and coal） on such failures, integrating models of all of these sub-processes is necessary. This paper describes the integration of models of the five processes and evaluates the integration of the first two of these models using laboratory generated data.

A Two-Parameter Description for the Injury Risk of Flash Bangs with Uncertainty

We study the random injury outcome caused by multiple flash bang submunitions on a crowd. We are particularly interested in the fluctuations in injury outcome among individual realizations. Previously, to simulate the distribution of the actual number of injured, we developed a comprehensive Monte Carlo model. While the full computational model is important for thorough theoretical investigations, in practical operations, it is desirable to characterize the phenomenological behavior of injury outcome using a concise model with only one or two parameters. Conventionally, the injury outcome is indicated by the average fraction of injured, which is called the risk of significant injury (RsI). The single metric RsI description fails to capture fluctuations in the injury outcome. The number of injured in the crowd is influenced by many random factors: the aiming error of flash bang mortar, the dispersion of submunitions after mortar burst, the amount of acoustic dose reaching individual subjects, and the biovariability of individual subjects’ reactions to a given acoustic dose. We aim to include these random factors properly and concisely. In this study, we represent the random injury outcome as a compound binomial model, in which the hidden injury probability is drawn from a two-parameter model distribution. We formulate and examine six model distributions for the injury probability. The best performer is a mixture of uniform and triangle distributions, parameterized by (RsI, dp) where dp is the standard deviation of the hidden injury probability. This mixture model predicts the behavior of injury outcome with uncertainty, based solely on the two parameters (RsI, dp) in the flash bang description. For example, we can predict the probability of the injury outcome not exceeding a prescribed tolerance. Potential Compressive sites of the Anterior Interosseous Nerve in the Proximal Forearm: An Anatomic study

Background: The etiology and treatment of spontaneous paralysis variants of anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) syndrome remains controversial. Variation and multiple sites of potential compression complicate the successful performance of neurolysis. This anatomic study of the AIN and sites of potential compression in the proximal forearm facilitates critical steps involved in neurolytic procedures and management. Methods: Upper extremities of twelve cadavers were examined to evaluate potential sites of AIN compression in the proximal forearm. Potential sites of musculoaponeurotic compression were evaluated, including: lacertus fibrosus;inferior fibrous arch of the humeral head of the pronator teres (PT) muscle;inferior fibrous arch of the ulnar head of the PT muscle;fibrous arch in the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDs) muscle;Gantzer’s muscle;and vascular structures near the AIN and median nerve. Results: The AIN arose at a mean distance of 54.5 mm distal to the elbow from the posterior (n = 9) or ulnar side (n = 3) of the median nerve. Relative positions of AIN branches were variable. A fibrous arch was found between the lacertus fibrosus and the PT in two cases. Nine cadavers had two fibrous arches in the PT and FDs, and three cadavers had one arch. An accessory head in the FDs was found to be a risk of AIN compression. Gantzer’s muscle was present in six cases, crossing the AIN superficially. Two potentially compressive vascular arches were identified. Conclusions: Our observations confirm that multiple musculoaponeurotic and/or vascular structures can contribute to AIN compression in the proximal forearm. Understanding the complex anatomic relationships of this nerve is crucial to improving outcomes of neurolysis in cases of non-regressive AIN paralysis.

利用光纤分布式声传感对安装在地面的垂直检波器的响应进行了对比实验。分布式声传感由安装在光纤上的光学询问器组成。光纤是光缆的一部分,安装在0.3~0.76m深的沿海松散沙地环境中。用两个系统同时记录冲击锤产生的地震信号,并直接进行比较。在震源和光纤电缆之间进行两种不同排布方式,即垂射和端射的实验。利用面波频谱分析法,对在两种排布方式用两种传感器系统记录的地震信号进行相同处理。所得结果说明了分布式声传感用于近地表地震测量的适用性和局限性。
