Effects of Asian dust events on atmospheric bacterial communities at different distances downwind of the source region

Aeolian dust particles arising from arid and semiarid zones are known to carry microbes by air currents. The effect of wind-borne bacteria on atmospheric bacterial population at various downwind distances from the dust source regions must be clarified, but has not yet been reported. This study monitored the bacterial abundance and community composition in outdoor aerosol samples in Beijing, China, which is close to the Asian dust source regions, and compared them with the results obtained in a distant region（Osaka, Japan）.The Asian dust collected in Beijing contained（4 ± 3） × 10^4 bacterial cells/m^3, approximately 4 times higher than in Osaka. On 15 April 2015, Beijing experienced severe Asian dust events with a 1000-fold increase in bacterial abundance, relative to non-Asian dust days. Dominant bacterial phyla and classes in Asian dust collected in Beijing were Actinobacteria, Bacilli and Acidobacteria, and the bacterial community composition varied more widely than in *** bacterial community compositions differed between the Beijing and Osaka dusts, even for the same Asian dust events. These results indicated that aerosol bacterial communities nearer the dust source are more affected by eolian dust than their distant counterparts.

XAFS Study on Solid State Amorphization of Alloys by Mechanical Alloying

Structural evolution of alloys by ball milling during solid state amorphization were studied by means of XAFS technique. The first one is amorphization process of Fe and B powder mixtures by mechanical alloying (MA), and the second one is amorphization process of ordered B2 CoZr intermetallic compound by mechanical milling (MM). The mixing process of Fe and B and disintegration process of ordered B2 CoZr intermetallic compound crystal were observed clearly in atomic level by XAFS method. The micro mechanism of amorphization process of alloy by ball milling was discussed.

Oxygen vacancy and Mn2+induced ferromagnetism in Mn-doped ZnO thin films

With the purpose of investigating the origin of ferromagnetism(FM), Mn-doped Zn O thin films had been fabricated by radio frequency(rf) magnetron sputtering and subsequent anneal process. The characterization of the Mn-doped Zn O thin films was conducted by X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID). With increasing the anneal temperature from 300°C to 700°C for 3 min, the influence on magnetism of the Mndoped ZnO thin films is slight. While extending the anneal time from 3 to 50 min at 300°C, the influence on magnetism is obvious and the Mn-doped ZnO thin films with 30 min clearly demonstrate FM. Compared with the effect of oxygen vacancy and substitutional Mn2+on the ferromagnetic behavior, OVplays the main role in inducing FM of the Mn-doped ZnO thin films with good crystal structure.

Metachronous penile metastasis from rectal cancer after total pelvic exenteration

Despite its abundant vascularization and extensive circulatory communication with neighboring organs, metastases to the penis are a rare event. A 57-yearold male, who had undergone total pelvic exenteration for rectal cancer sixteen months earlier, demonstrated an abnormal uptake within his penis by positron emission tomography/computed tomography. A single elastic nodule of the middle penis shaft was noted deep within Bucks fascia. No other obvious recurrent site was noted except the penile lesion. Total penectomy was performed as a curative resection based on a diagnosis of isolated penile metastasis from rectal cancer. A histopathological examination revealed an increase of well differentiated adenocarcinoma in the corpus spongiosum consistent with his primary rectal tumor. The immunohistochemistry of the tumor cells demonstrated positive staining for cytokeratin 20 and negative staining for cytokeratin 7, which strongly supported a diagnosis of penile metastasis from the rectum. The patient is alive more than two years without any recurrence.

Patient blinding with blunt tip placebo acupuncture needles:comparison between 1 mm and 2 mm skin press

Objective： To investigate the influence of the depth of skin press in blunt tip placebo acupuncture needles on patient blinding and its relationship to needle ***： Forty healthy volunteers were enrolled as subjects for patient blinding. Four acupuncturists applied the following needles randomly at three points in each forearm： 0.18 mm and 0.25 mm diameter penetrating needles inserted to a depth of 5 mm, and 0.18 mm and 0.25 mm diameter skin-touch needles depressing the skin at the acupoint to a depth of 1 mm and 2 mm from the skin surface. The subjects reported their guesses at the nature of needles they received, and rated needle pain and de qi. A blinding index was calculated to define the success of blinding for ***： The blinding status of subjects for 1 mm press needles of 0.18 mm diameter was ＂random guess＂,but ＂unblinded＂ for 1 mm press needles of 0.25 mm diameter. For 2 mm press needles of both diameters,the blinding status was ＂opposite guess＂ and the blinding status for penetrating needles of both diameters was ＂unblinded.＂ The percentages of ＂felt pain＂ with 2 mm press needles of both diameters were similar to that with penetrating needles, but those were not similar for 1 mm press needles. The frequency of de qi occurrence with 2 mm press needles of 0.18 mm diameter was similar to that of penetrating needles of both ***： Placebo needles of 2 mm press made more subjects guess that the needles penetrated the skin than 1 mm press needles. The use of small diameter needles increased patient blinding.

Role of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the differential diagnosis of focal hepatic lesions

AIM： To evaluate the utility of diffusion-weighted imaging （DWl） in screening and differential diagnosis of benign and malignant focal hepatic lesions. METHODS： Magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） examinations were performed using the Signa Excite Xl Twin Speed 1.5T system （GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, Wl, USA）. Seventy patients who had undergone MRI of the liver [29 hepatocellular carcinomas （HCC）, four cholangiocarcinomas, 34 metastatic liver cancers, 10 hemangiomas, and eight cysts] between April 2004 and August 2008 were retrospectively evaluated. Visualization of lesions, relative contrast ratio （RCR）, and apparent diffusion coefficient （ADC） were compared between benign and malignant lesions on DWl. Su- perparamagnetic iron oxide （SPIO） was administered to 59 patients, and RCR was compared pre- and ***： DWI showed higher contrast between malignant lesions （especially in multiple small metastatic cancers） and surrounding liver parenchyma than did contrast-enhanced computed tomography. ADCs （mean±SD × 10^-3 mm2/s） were significantly lower （P 〈 0.05） in malignant lesions （HCC： 1.31 ± 0.28 and liver metastasis： 1.11 ± 0.22） and were significantly higher in benign lesions （hemangioma： 1.84 ± 0.37 and cyst： 2.61 ± 0.45） than in the surrounding hepatic tissues. RCR between malignant lesions and surrounding he- patic tissues significantly improved after SPIO administration, but RCRs in benign lesions were not ***： DWI is a simple and sensitive method for screening focal hepatic lesions and is useful for differential diagnosis.

Proton pump inhibitor step-down therapy for GERD:A multi-center study in Japan

AIM:To investigate the predictors of success in stepdown of proton pump inhibitor and to assess the quality of life(QOL).METHODS:Patients who had heartburn twice a week or more were treated with 20 mg omeprazole(OPZ) once daily for 8 wk as an initial therapy(study 1).Patients whose heartburn decreased to once a week or less at the end of the initial therapy were enrolled in study 2 and treated with 10 mg OPZ as maintenance therapy for an additional 6 mo(study 2).QOL was in-vestigated using the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale(GSRS)before initial therapy,after both 4 and 8 wk of initial therapy,and at 1,2,3,and 6 mo after starting maintenance ***:In study 1,108 patients were *** characteristics were as follows;median age:63(range: 20-88)years,sex:46 women and 62 *** success rate of the initial therapy was 76%.In the patients with successful initial therapy,abdominal pain,indigestion and reflux GSRS scores were *** study 2,83 patients were *** of 83 patients completed the study 2 *** the per-protocol analysis,80%of 70 patients were successful for *** multivariate analysis of baseline demographic data and clinical information,no previous treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)[odds ratio (OR)0.255,95%CI:0.06-0.98]and a lower indigestion score in GSRS at the beginning of step-down therapy(OR 0.214,95%CI:0.06-0.73)were found to be the predictors of successful step-down *** improved GSRS scores by initial therapy were maintained through the step-down ***:OPZ was effective for most GERD ***,those who have had previous treatment for GERD and experience dyspepsia before stepdown require particular monitoring for relapse.

An autopsy case of granulocyte-colony-stimulating-factor- producing extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma

A 79-year-old man was referred to this department due to the presence of extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma with a tumor at the left chest wall. The lesion was suspected to be a metastasis of bile duct carcinoma to the left wall, however, computed tomography (CT) revealed no regional lymph node or liver metastases. In addition, cytological and pathological examinations did not show malignancy. At the time of admission, the white blood cell count was 21 460 cells/μL (neutrophils, 18 240 cells/μL) and this elevated to 106 040 before death. In addition, serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was elevated. At 28 d after admission, the patient died. An autopsy showed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with sarcomatous change, which had slightly invaded into the pancreas around the bile duct, and was found in the distal bile duct with multiple metastases to the chest wall, lung, kidney, adrenal body, liver, mesentery, vertebra and mediastinal and para-aortic lymph nodes, without locoregional lymph node and liver metastasis. The cancer cells showed positive immunohistochemical staining for anti-G-CSF antibody. This is believed to be the first report of an extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma that produces G-CSF. Since G-CSF-producing carcinoma and sarcomatous change of the biliary tract leads to poor prognosis, early diagnosis and treatment are needed. When infection is ruled out, the G-CSF in serum should be examined. In addition, examinations such as bonescintigraphy and chest CT should also be considered for distant metastasis.
