Berberine for prevention of dementia associated with diabetes and its comorbidities:A systematic review

Background: A growing number of epidemiological studies indicate that metabolic syndrome(MetS) and its associated features play a key role in the development of certain degenerative brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Produced by several different medicinal plants, berberine is a bioactive alkaloid with a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antidiabetic ***, it is not clear whether berberine could prevent the development of dementia in association with ***: To give an overview of the therapeutic potential of berberine as a treatment for dementia associated with *** strategy: Database searches A and B were conducted using Pub Med and Science Direct. In search A,studies on berberine’s antidementia activities were identified using “berberine” and “dementia” as search terms. In search B, recent studies on berberine’s effects on diabetes were surveyed using “berberine” and“diabetes” as search *** criteria: Clinical and preclinical studies that investigated berberine’s effects associated with Met S and cognitive dysfunction were *** extraction and analysis: Data from studies were extracted by one author, and checked by a second;quality assessments were performed independently by two ***: In search A, 61 articles were identified, and 22 original research articles were selected. In search B, 458 articles were identified, of which 101 were deemed relevant and selected. Three duplicates were removed, and a total of 120 articles were reviewed for this study. The results demonstrate that berberine exerts beneficial effects directly in the brain: enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission, improving cerebral blood flow, protecting neurons from inflammation, limiting hyperphosphorylation of tau and facilitating b-amyloid peptide clearance. In addition, evidence is growing that berberine is effective against diabetes and associated disorders, such as atherosclerosis

Transforming growth factor （TGF）-β regulates a wide variety of cellular responses, including cell growth arrest, apoptosis, cell differentiation, motility, invasion, extracellular matrix production, tissue fibrosis, angiogenesis, and immune function. Although tumor-suppressive roles of TGF-β have been extensively studied and well-characterized in many cancers, especially at early stages, accumulating evidence has revealed the critical roles of TGF-β as a pro-tumorigenic factor in various types of cancer. This review will focus on recent findings regarding epithelial-mesenchymal transition （EMT） induced by TGF-β, in relation to crosstalk with some other signaling pathways, and the roles of TGF-[~ in lung and pancreatic cancers, in which TGF-β has been shown to be involved in cancer progression. Recent findings also strongly suggested that targeting TGF-β signaling using specific inhibitors may be useful for the treatment of some cancers. TGF-β plays a pivotal role in the differentiation and function of regulatory T cells （Tregs）. TGF-β is produced as latent high molecular weight complexes, and the latent TGF-β complex expressed on the surface of Tregs contains glycoprotein A repetitions predominant （GARP, also known as leucine-rich repeat containing 32 or LRRC32）. Inhibition of the TGF-β activities through regulation of the latent TGF-β complex activation will be discussed.

Tea is one of the most consumed beverages in the world and its quality is influenced by geographical origin and production methods. This study focuses on the volatile aroma components of 38 tea products from China, Japan, Indonesia, Sri-Lanka, and Chinese Taipei;among them 7 green teas, 13 oolong teas, and 18 black teas. The volatiles were extracted from the infusions using PorapakQ-resin, concentrated, and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The components were identified by authentic reference compounds or preliminary based on their mass spectra. Different manufacturing processes yield different blends of aroma compounds. In general, the contents of total volatiles, aliphatics, aromatics, and terpenoids increased with the fermentation degree, whereas jasmine lactone and indole were the highest in oolong teas. Some particular manufacturing processes, for example, the use of tea leaves infested by the tea green leafhopper, lead to higher contents of volatiles in final products as in Oriental Beauty oolong tea. The relative peak areas determined for 82 volatiles were the basis for the statistical analysis and highlight the potential of multivariate analysis to distinguish tea samples of different categories.

This paper presents practical distribution system equipment models such as various distributed generators, voltage regulators, and loads for fast three phase unbalanced load flow calculation in distribution systems. The method can calculate voltage and current of distribution systems, in which distributed generators are introduced. The calculation time of the proposed method is about 40 times faster than that of the Newton-Raphson method. Moreover, an introduction effect evaluation tool for distributed generators using the proposed three phase unbalanced load flow calculation is presented. It provides various functions such as a power system network diagram creation function and a voltage profile chart display function. Therefore, the introduction effect evaluation of distributed generators in distribution systems can be evaluated quite easily.

AIM:To investigate whether flexible spectral color enhancement(FICE) improves diagnostic yields of capsule endoscopy(CE) for obscure gastro-intestinal bleeding(OGIB).METHODS:The study subjects consisted of 81 *** FICE,there were three different sets with different *** randomly selected sets of FICE,images of CE were evaluated again by two individuals who were not shown the conventional CE reports and *** difference between FICE and conventional imaging was ***:The overall diagnostic yields in FICE sets 1,2,3 and conventional imaging(48.1%) were 51.9%,40.7%,51.9% and 48.1%,respectively,which showed no statistical difference compared to conventional *** total numbers of detected lesions per examination in FICE imaging and conventional imaging were 2.5 ± 2.1 and 1.8 ± 1.7,respectively,which showed a significant difference(P = 0.01).CONCLUSION:The diagnostic yield for OGIB is not improved by ***,FICE can detect significantly more small bowel lesions compared to conventional imaging.

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an inherited adult onset motor ne uron disease caused by the expansion of a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract within the androgen receptor (AR), affecting only males. The characteristic pathological f inding is nuclear inclusions (NIs) consisting of mutant AR with an expanded poly Q in residual motor neurons, and in certain visceral organs. We immunohistochemi cally examined 11 SBMA patients at autopsy with 1C2, an antibody that specifical ly recognizes expanded *** study demonstrated that diffuse nuclear accumul ation of mutant AR was far more frequent and extensive than NIs being distribute d in a wide array of CNS nuclei, and in more visceral organs than thus far belie ved. Mutant AR accumulation was also present in the cytoplasm, particularly in t he Golgi apparatus; nuclear or cytoplasmic predominance of accumulation was tiss ue specific. Furthermore,the extent of diffuse nuclear accumulation of mutant AR in motor and sensory neurons of the spinal cord was closely related to CAG repe at length. Thus, diffuse nuclear accumulation of mutant AR apparently is a cardi nal pathogenetic process underlying neurological manifestations, as in SBMA tran sgenic mice, while cytoplasmic accumulation may also contribute to SBMA pathophy siology.
