Multitaper spectral method to estimate the elastic thickness of South China: Implications for intracontinental deformation

The effective elastic thickness （Te） represents the thickness of the elastic layer or the flexural rigidity of the lithosphere, the equivalent of which can be calculated from the spectral analysis of gravity and topographic data. Studies of Te have profound influence on intracontinental deformation, and coupling of the tectonic blocks. In this paper, we use the multitaper spectral estimation method to calculate the coherence between Bouguer gravity and topography data, and to obtain the Te map of South China. Through the process of correction, we discuss the relationships of Te versus heat flow, and Te versus seismicity. The results show that Te distribution of South China is affected by three factors：the original age, which controls the basic feature;the Mesozoic evolution, which affects the Te distribution;and the neotectonic movement, which shaped the final distribution. The crust age has a positive correlation with the first-order Te distribution;thus the Yangtze Craton has a relatively higher Te （about 50 km） whereas the Te in Cathaysia block is only 10e20 km. By analysis and comparison among the tectonic models of South China, the Te distribution can be well explained using the flat-subduction model. As is typical with neotectonics, the region with a higher heat flow is related with a lower Te. The seismicity does not have a clear relationship with Te, but the strong seismicity could cause a low Te. Seismogenic layer （Ts） has a similar trend as Te in the craton, whereas in other areas the relationship is complex.

Differential levels of mite infestation of wheat and barley in Czech grain stores

While mites are able to utilize numerous food sources, the suitability of the food strongly influences population growth. The different suitabilities of various stored agricultural products will thus affect the level of infestation. In this study, we compared field mite infestation rates in two stored cereals： wheat and barley. We analyzed mite abundance, frequency and species composition in samples of grain obtained from 79 selected Czech grain stores. Stored barley seemed to be more vulnerable to mite attack than wheat, as we consistently found more infested samples, more species and higher mean and median mite abundance per sample in barley as compared to wheat. The mean mite abundance per sam- ple were 55 and 506 individuals for wheat and barley, respectively. In barley, 10% of sampies exceeded allergen risk threshold （i.e., 1 000 individuals per kg of grain）. Altogether, 25 species were identified from approximately 35 000 individuals. The most frequently identified species were the same in wheat and barley, that is, Tydeus interruptus Sig Thor, Acarus siro L., Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist, Lepidoglyphus destructor （Schrank） and Tyrophagus putrescentiae （Schrank）. Based on principal components analysis, we found a closer association of T. interruptus, T. putrescentiae, L. destructor and Cheyletus eruditus （Schrank） with barley samples, corresponding to the high frequency and abundance values of these mites. The probable reasons for the higher infestation, especially mite abundance in barley, are discussed in relation to the higher proportion of crushed parts, which may release favorable nutrient sources and amplify the abundance values.

The use of animals lacking genes or expressing genes under the control of cell-specific promoters has signifi cantly increased our knowledge of the genetic and molecular basis of physiopathology,allowing testing of functional hypotheses and validation of biochemical and pharmacologic approaches in order to understand cell ***,with unexpected frequency,gene knockout animals and,more commonly,animal models of transgenesis give experimental support to even opposite conclusions on gene *** we summarize what we learned on the role of cyclooxygenase 2(COX-2) in liver and revise the results obtained in 3 independent models of mice expressing a COX-2 transgene specifi cally in the *** challenge with pro-inflammatory stimuli,the animals behave very differently,some transgenic models having a protective effect but others enhancing the *** addition,one transgene exerts differential effects on normal liver physiology depending on the transgenic animal model used.

Osmotic Stress Modulates the Balance between Exocytosis and Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis in Arabidopsis thaliana

The sessile life style of plants creates the need to deal with an often adverse environment, in which water availability can change on a daily basis, challenging the cellular physiology and integrity. Changes in os- motic conditions disrupt the equilibrium of the plasma membrane： hypoosmotic conditions increase and hyperosmotic environment decrease the cell volume. Here, we show that short-term extracellular osmotic treatments are closely followed by a shift in the balance between endocytosis and exocytosis in root mer- istem cells. Acute hyperosmotic treatments （ionic and nonionic） enhance clathrin-mediated endocytosis simultaneously attenuating exocytosis, whereas hypoosmotic treatments have the opposite effects. In addition to clathrin recruitment to the plasma membrane, components of early endocytic trafficking are essential during hyperosmotic stress responses. Consequently, growth of seedlings defective in elements of clathrin or early endocytic machinery is more sensitive to hyperosmotic treatments. We also found that the endocytotic response to a change of osmotic status in the environment is dominant over the presum- ably evolutionary more recent regulatory effect of plant hormones, such as auxin. These results imply that osmotic perturbation influences the balance between endocytosis and exocytosis acting through clathrin- mediated endocytosis. We propose that tension on the plasma membrane determines the addition or removal of membranes at the cell surface, thus preserving cell integrity.

Anaphylactic Shock Due to Psyllium (<i>Plantago ovate</i>Seed) Allergy: A Case Report

The seeds of Plantago ovata, called psyllium or ispaghula, have been used in the preparation of bulk laxatives. Nowadays, it is also used as an ingredient in bakery and breakfast cereals to increase dietary fiber and to give baking products fluffiness and viscosity. Mostly, there are described cases of occupational allergy that handle Plantago ovata seeds in powder laxatives and some cases of anaphylaxis after eating products containing psyllium. This case report is about a geriatric assistant who had an anaphylactic shock after eating a multigrain gluten-free piece of bread containing psyllium, who presented a positive skin test with psyllium in the allergy study. We recommended to the patient to avoid the ingestion and the inhalation at work of Plantago ovata seeds and to carry self-injectable adrenaline. With this case, we would like to highlight the growing uses of psyllium, especially in bakery products, and that it can behave like a hidden allergen.

Non-destructive corrosion study on a magnesium alloy with mechanical properties tailored for biodegradable cardiovascular stent applications

AnMg-2Zn-0.6Zr-0.6Nd alloy for biodegradable cardiovascular stent applications was prepared through indirect extrusion. The alloy exhibited a superior combination of tensile yield strength(TYS), ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and elongation(EL) of about 269 MPa, 298 MPa and 25.6 %, respectively. In addition,the non-destructive electrochemical frequency modulation(EFM) technique was used for the first time to investigate the corrosion behavior of Mg alloys combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium(DMEM) and in Hank’s solution. Compared with the corrosion rate of 0.07 mm/year in Hank’s solution, lower corrosion rate of 0.03 mm/year was achieved in DMEM. The significant differences between the corrosion rate trends were discussed and related with the composition of the corrosion layer formed. Depending on the biomimetic fluids tested, different corrosion products were precipitated on the alloy’s surface: a compact and homogeneous layer of Mg_(x)Ca_(y)(PO_(4))_(z) and Zn(OH)_(2) and organic compounds was formed in DMEM, whereas a partial coverage of Mg_(x)Ca_(y)(PO_(4))_(z) and Zn(OH)_(2) was formed in Hank’s solution.

Retraction pocket excision with cartilage grafting as a preventive surgery for cholesteatoma

Aims: The goal of the present study is to summarize our experience on surgical management of retraction pockets(RP) as a preventive tool against ***:Twenty-five ears have been followed up for a mean period of 6.16 ± 4.35 years(from 1 to 17 years). The sample presented a mean age of 47.56 + 19.11 years(from 16 to 73 years). All patients underwent cartilage graft surgery. Furthermore 10(40%) underwent tympanoplasty(TPL) type Ⅰ, 14(56%) TPL type Ⅱ and 1(4%) TPL type Ⅴ.Results: Eleven ears(44%) showed cholesteatoma: all these cases were stage Ⅲ according to Charachon staging, and stage Ⅳ or Ⅴ according to Gersdorff classification. Twelve patients(48%) showed erosion of the ossicular chain. Of these, five were associated with cholesteatoma and seven only with retraction. The recurrence rate of cholesteatoma was 12%. None of the patients with a stage Ⅱ or Ⅲ RP(according to Gersdorff classification) developed cholesteatoma. The recurrence of RP was 0%.In regards to literature review, seven references were selected. These studies showed a success rate ranging from 79.1% to 88%, while recurrences of RP varied from 6.4% to 13%. Only one study specified a recurrence rate of cholesteatoma of 28%.Conclusions: Surgical treatment of stages Ⅱ and Ⅲ RP is an effective tool to prevent cholesteatoma formation. The presence of keratin accumulation and cholesteatoma at the RP(stages Ⅳ and Ⅴ, according to Gersdorff) are the real predictors of poor prognosis.

本文展示了一个用于生物医学微波成像应用的超宽带小型化Vivaldi天线的设计。天线通过以下几种技术达到小型化:1)采用高介电常数天线基板材料（ε=10.2）。2)将天线置于高介电常数耦合介质（ε=23）内。3)在辐射体上开双槽,在不增加整体天线尺寸的情况下通过增加辐射体表面电流路径而降低天线最低谐振频率。仿真结果证明相对于无槽天线,天线开槽可以有效增加天线在低频的回波损耗。此外,两个天线并列仿真结果证明,该天线的开槽设计更可以有效降低天线之间的耦合。天线置于人体腹腔仿体前的仿真结果证明其性能相对于单个工作的天线而言基本一致。最终天线的尺寸在40 mm×60 mm×1.9 mm （宽×长×厚）,其工作频率在480 MHz-515 MHz,600 MHz-3 GHz之间。天线支持在更高频段工作,且宽度远小于在耦合介质中最低工作频率的半波长。
