Spine biomechanical testing methods in the past few decades have not evolved beyond employing either cadaveric studies or finite element modeling ***,both these approaches may have inherent cost and time *** studies are the present gold standard for spinal implant design and regulatory approval,but they introduce significant variability in measurements across patients,often requiring large sample *** element modeling demands considerable expertise and can be computationally expensive when complex geometry and material nonlinearity are *** analogue spine models could complement these traditional methods as a low-cost and high-fidelity alternative.A fully 3d printable L-S1 analogue spine model with ligaments is developed and validated in this *** stiffness of the model under pure bending loading in flexion-extension,Lateral Bending(LB)and Axial Rotation(AR)is evaluated and compared against historical ex vivo and in silico ***,the effect of interspinous,intertransverse ligaments and the Thoracolumbar Fascia(TLF)on spinal stiffness is evaluated by systematic construction of the *** flexion,model Range of Motion(ROM)was 12.92±0.11°(ex vivo:16.58°,in silico:12.96°)at *** LB,average ROM was 13.67±0.12°at 7.5 Nm(ex vivo:15.21±1.89°,in silico:15.49±0.23°).Similarly,in AR,average ROM was 17.69±2.12°at 7.5Nm(ex vivo:14.12±0.31°,in silico:15.91±0.28°).The addition of interspinous and intertransverse ligaments increased both flexion and LB stiffnesses by approximately 5%.Addition of TLF showed increase in flexion and AR stiffnesses by 29%and 24%,*** novel model can reproduce physiological ROMs with high repeatability and could be a useful open-source tool in spine biomechanics.

Species Account of Anura ns from the Western Slope of Mt. Kita nglad, Mindanao Island, Philippines

The Mt. Kitanglad Range is one of the country’s important key biodiversity sites;however, information about anuran diversity in this protected area remains depauperate. Herein we provided accounts of anuran species from high-elevation forests, in three sites of the western slope of Mt. Kitanglad range. The combined belt-transect sampling and microha bitat searches accounted for 13 species representing five families. The most represented family was Rhacophoridae with five representative species of the genus Philautus. Twelve out of the 13 species documented in the current survey are endemic. Four previously unaccounted species(Pelophr yne brevipes, Pulchrana grandocula, Sanguirana mearnsi, and Philautus surrufus) were added and brought the total anurans known from Mt. Kitanglad to 26 species. Most of the species were also recorded in forested sites, suggestive of their lesser affinity to non-forested ecosystems. The additional species detected during our survey may also imply that full understanding of anuran diversity of Mt. Kitanglad remains far from complete.

Intramural duodenal hematoma is a rare cause of a proximal gastrointestinal tract *** of intramural duodenal hematoma most often occurs following blunt abdominal trauma in children,but spontaneous non-traumatic cases have been linked to anticoagulant therapy,pancreatitis,malignancy,vasculitis and *** report an unusual case of spontaneous intramural duodenal hematoma presenting as an intestinal obstruction associated with acute pancreatitis in a patient with established von Willebrand disease,type *** patient presented with abrupt onset of abdominal pain,nausea,and *** tomography imaging identified an intramural duodenal mass consistent with blood measuring 4.7 cm×8.7 cm in the second portion of the duodenum abutting on the head of the *** lipase was 3828 units/*** was managed conservatively with bowel rest,continuous nasogastric decompression,total parenteral nutrition,recombinant factorⅧ(humateP)and *** resolved over the course of the *** case highlights an important complication of an inherited coagulopathy.

The concept of quasi-particles forms the theoretical basis of our microscopic understanding of emergent phenomena associated with quantum-mechanical many-body ***,the quasi-particle theory in disordered materials has proven difficult,resulting in the predominance of mean-field ***,we report first-principles phonon calculations and inelastic X-ray and neutron-scattering measurements on equiatomic alloys(NiCo,NiFe,AgPd,and NiFeCo)with force-constant dominant disorder—confronting a key 50-year-old assumption in the Hamiltonian of all mean-field quasi-particle solutions for off-diagonal *** results have revealed the presence of a large,and heretofore unrecognized,impact of local chemical environments on the distribution of the species-pair-resolved force-constant disorder that can dominate phonon *** discovery not only identifies a critical analysis issue that has broad implications for other elementary excitations,such as magnons and skyrmions in magnetic alloys,but also provides an important tool for the design of materials with ultralow thermal conductivities.

Evaluating the performance of nanostructured materials as lithium-ion battery electrodes

The performance of the lithium-ion cell is heavily dependent on the ability of the host electrodes to accommodate and release Li＋ ions from the local structure. While the choice of electrode materials may define parameters such as cell potential and capacity, the process of intercalation may be physically limited by the rate of solid-state Li＋ diffusion. Increased diffusion rates in lithium-ion electrodes may be achieved through a reduction in the diffusion path, accomplished by a scaling of the respective electrode dimensions. In addition, some electrodes may undergo large volume changes associated with charging and discharging, the strain of which, may be better accommodated through nanostructuring. Failure of the host to accommodate such volume changes may lead to pulverisation of the local structure and a rapid loss of capacity. In this review article, we seek to highlight a number of significant gains in the development of nanostructured lithium-ion battery architectures （both anode and cathode）, as drivers of potential next-generation electrochemical energy storage devices.

Effects of elevation on spring phenological sensitivity to temperature in Tibetan Plateau grasslands

Vegetation phenology is an important indicator of climate change impacts on the seasonal dynamics of the biosphere. However, little is known about the influence of elevation on spring phenological sensitivity to temperature in an alpine ecosystem. Based on remotely sensed land surface phenology and temperature data from 2001 to2010, this study investigated the rate of spring phenological change of the Tibetan Plateau(TP) grasslands in response to interannual temperature variations at different elevations. Results suggest that spring phenology in the TP grasslands exhibits a stronger response to changes in temperature at higher elevations than at lower ones. In particular, spring phenology advanced by 1–2 days in response to a 1 °C increase in May average temperature at elevations from 3,000 to 3,500 m, while the rate was up to8–9 days/°C at 5,000–5,500 m. Analysis using accumulated growing degree days(AGdd) from January 1through May 31 showed the same general trend with increased elevation associated with increased sensitivity(as measured by phenological change per unit of AGddchange). Such temperature sensitivity gradients in the TP grasslands could be partly explained by the growth efficiency hypothesis which suggests that vegetation adapted to colder climates likely requires less heat energy for the onset of growing season and vice versa in warmer ***, accumulated growing degree days from January 1 to the greenup date were found to decrease with increasing elevations, which provided evidence to support the applicability of the growth efficiency hypothesis in an alpine grassland ecosystem.

Responses in splanchnic and mammary amino acid metabolism to short-term graded removal of methionine in lactating goats

Four multi-catheterized lactating goats were used in a 4×4 Latin square experiment to investigate the responses of amino acid metabolism in portal-drained viscera(PdV),liver,and mammary glands to short-term varying supplies of methionine(Met).during the last 45 h in each experimental period,goats were fasted for 12 h and then abomasally infused with an amino acid(AA)mixture plus glucose for 33 *** consisted of graded removal of Met from an infused AA mixture to achieve Met content in the infusate of 100%(complete),60%,30%,or 0%that in *** Met removal decreased the pro-duction of milk,milk protein,lactose,and fat linearly whilst also decreasing arterial Met concentration linearly(PdV uptake and liver removal of Met decreased linearly(Pdue to decreased Met affinity of PdV and liver(P0.1)was maintained as Met supply *** was achieved through increased mammary affinity(Pd increased mammary blood flow(Pdecreased circu-lating Met *** removal of Met from the infusate linearly decreased mammary uptake-to-milk output ratios of Met(Pd tended to decrease essential amino acid(EAA)linearly(0.05decreased circulating concentration of prolactin and linearly increased insulin concentration(Pdy indicated there were several mechanisms used to mitigate a Met deficiency,including reduced catabolism of Met in PdV,liver,and peripheral tissue(including mammary glands)and a linear increase in mammary blood *** observed decreases in milk protein production as Met supply decreased appear to be a result of regulatory events which may have been driven by decreased circulating prolactin,rather than as a result of decreased mammary Met uptake.

Intra-abdominal abscesses secondary to <i>Streptococcus anginosus</i>infection in a postpartum patient: A case report and review of the literature

Although rare, infection with Streptococcus anginosus has a known predilection for abscess formation. We report here a case of a 20 year-old, otherwise healthy female patient noted to have developed abdominal and pelvic abscesses secondary to Streptococcus anginosus infection. Although the inciting focus of the pathogen remains unclear in our patient, this case report emphasizes the importance of rapid identification of the organism and highlights the approach to therapeutic options in the management of such cases.
