Selective biomass conversion over novel designed tandem catalyst

Selective conversion of biomass into targeted molecules like polyols, especially, from cellulosic compounds, is being widely investigated as a sustainable process to produce biodiesel and bio- additives. The known process involves two steps, namely hydrolysis and hydrogenation. Thus, it requires two different catalytic materials or bifunctional catalysts. In this context, the present work reports a new catalytic approach based on the use of tandem catalysts, consisting of the combination of an acid solid catalyst (active for hydrolysis) and a supported metal catalyst (active for hydrogenation). Two different functionalized activated carbons and the resin Amberlyst 15 have been tested as solid acid catalysts, and Ru nanoparticles supported on the original activated carbon (SA) are the metal catalyst part of the tandem. All the tested tandem catalysts exhibited higher activity than the supported Ru catalyst did. The highest cellulose conversion and selectivity to sorbitol (70% and 86%, respectively) have been obtained over a novel tandem catalyst, which resulted from a physical mixture between a sulfuric acid modified SA carbon (SASu) and Ru loaded SA (Ru/SA), leading to a tandem catalyst (Ru/SA + SASu). This novel-designed tandem catalyst is reusable. Based on tandem catalysts with a solid-solid system combination, the adopted novel- designed catalytic approach is cost-efficient and sustainable, and can be considered promising for the green production of high-added-value chemicals.

In recent years,the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) has been on the rise,extending to countries where it was infrequent in the past. As a result,the gap between high and low incidence countries is decreasing. The disease,therefore,has an important economic impact on the healthcare system. Advances in recent years in pharmacogenetics and clinical pharmacology have allowed for the development of treatment strategies adjusted to the patient profile. Concurrently,new drugs aimed at inflammatory targets have been developed that may expand future treatment options. This review examines advances in the optimization of existing drug treatments and the development of novel treatment options for IBD.

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy is the standard treatment for resectable periampullary cancer. Surgical site infections(SSI) are common complications with increased morbidity. The study aimed to describe the prevalence, risk factors, microbiology, and outcomes of SSI among patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in a referral cancer center between January 2015 and June 2021. We analyzed baseline patient characteristics and SSI occurrence. Culture results and susceptibility patterns were described. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine risk factors, proportional hazards model to evaluate mortality, and Kaplan-Meier analysis to assess long-term survival. Results: A total of 219 patients were enrolled in the study;101(46%) developed SSI. Independent factors for SSI were diabetes mellitus, preoperative albumin level, biliary drainage, biliary prostheses, and clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula. The main pathogens were Enterobacteria and Enterococci. Multidrug-resistance rate in SSI was high but not associated with increased mortality. Infected patients had higher odds of sepsis, longer hospital stay and intensive care unit stay, and readmission rate. neither 30-day mortality nor long-term survival was significantly different between infected and non-infected patients. Conclusions: SSI prevalence among patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy was high and largely caused by resistant microorganisms. Most risk factors were related to preoperative instrumentation of the biliary tree. SSI was associated with greater risk of unfavorable outcomes;however, survival was unaffected.

Determination of Mercuric Ion in Water Samples with a LED Exciting and CCD Based Portable Spectrofluorimeter

The fluorescent characteristics of a fluorimetric chemosensor for mercuric ion, Hg2+, employing a synthesized Rhodamine 6G derivative, have been analyzed. For that, a portable spectrofluorimeter composed of a 515 nm LED as excitation source, two fiber-optics and a CCD camera as detector, has been used, intended for “in situ” analysis. A highly selective Rhodamine based probe for Hg2+, that is water soluble and gives a positive response upon analyte binding, is reported. The reagent is bearing a monothiospirolactone group in a Rhodamine 6G architecture and the thiol atom served for the direct attack of thiophilic Hg2+. The fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the spirolactone ring opening and the coordination of two sulphur atoms to Hg2+ giving a 2:1 reagent: Hg2+ stoichiometry complex.

As stated in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, children have the right to go to school for free, to play, and to have the same opportunity to develop and to learn to be responsible and useful[1]. Young children are curious by nature and they have passion for learning [2]. An environment that encourages scientific thinking is what gives young children the time, space and materials to exercise their curiosity [3]. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for the development of educational environments based on digital technology, internet and free programs available on the web, for the use and application of structural bioinformatics protein and DnA, for early stimulation in basic education at rural and indigenous communities in state of Oaxaca, conducted in On Line Learning & Training “OLL & T”. The course is divided into 4 sections: 1)Introduction to the topic of protein and DnA structure;2)Search in protein data bank;3)Download RasTop program and use it as bioinformatics tool;4)Emulation of building a viral molecule. Workshops were given to children in elementary, middle and high school at the Universidad del Papaloapan during the national Week of Science and Technology, every year in Oaxaca since 2007 to 2012 and in Monterrey 2010 at the Universidad Autonoma de nuevo León. Conclusions: positive impact was achieved in basic education in the area of natural sciences by analyzing the molecular basis of protein and deoxyribonucleic acid, theoretically and practically, as a support for teachers.

Preliminary Studies on Composition, Quality and Oxidative Stability of Commercial Avocado Oil Produced in Chile

Avocado oil is a relatively new oil in the market and is highly appreciated by the consumers because of its fine aroma, pleasant taste and health benefits. A study on the characterization of commercial avocado oils produced in Chile was conducted in order to discuss their quality parameters. The study was applied to two marketed avocado oils. The main analytical parameters evaluated to the oils were： fatty acid composition, total chlorophylls, total carotenoids, tocopherols, acid value, peroxide value, total phenolic compounds, polar compounds, oil stability, UV absorption and 3.5-stigmastadiene content. The fatty acid compositions of the studied oils were according with oil composition of pulp pure of avocado fruit. The analysis of tocopherols by high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） revealed significant differences between the avocado oils studied. Total phenolic compounds, oil stability, UV Absorption characteristics, peroxide value, acid value, tocopherols content, total chlorophylls, total carotenoids and polar compounds were also significantly different between the commercial studied oils. All the above results show a different quality between both commercial avocado oils, showing that the sample C has worse values for the parameters of quality as those required by legislation in many countries. Also, 3.5-stigmastadiene content shows high concentration for one of the commercial avocado oil evaluated which demonstrates the presence of refined oil or that the oil has been submitted to high temperatures. On the other hand it is remarkable that despite the fact that there are many differences in quality parameters, both oils are labeled and marketed as extra virgin quality oils, demonstrating the need to regulate the classification of appreciated oils by the consumers.
