Hydrogeological hazards and weather events:Triggering and evolution of shallow landslides

Landslides are the most intense and serious manifestations of the degradation of slopes and they are the main causes of geological hazard when they,directly or indirectly,involving towns and *** are a global environment problem;there are several examples that have produced untold damages and loss of human lives in many parts of the *** 1920 the landslides mobilization,as a result of a strong earthquake in China,in the province of Kansu,killed 200,000 people;in 1938 fast debris flow,triggered by heavy rainfalls in Japan,caused the death of 600 people;in 1963 in Italy the Vajont disaster caused the death of 1,899 people,as a result of a landslide localized in the underlying artificial *** the last years there have been many tragedies linked to intense rainfall events which have sparked many shallow landslides:1996 in Garfagnana,1998 in Sarno,2009 in the Ionic side of Messina,2011 in *** throw light on this problem,over the past decades,the assessment and mitigation of landslides hazard and the danger related to it,have become goals of paramount importance in territorial planning and,more generally,in its management and with it the safeguard of the historical and cultural heritage within *** occurrence of events which are considered exceptional thus implies a re-reading in terms of spatial planning to renovate the slopes and river-beds,as well as urban planning,infrastructural and socio-economic *** complex nature of these instability events that affect anthropized areas does not allow specific approaches for the defence of single good,but it finds a more effective solution based on the extensive knowledge of territory,perhaps at the scale of individual or several watersheds.

Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): A Successful Combination in a Challenging Case of Gastroschisis

Giant gastroschisis could be a surgical challenge concerning the abdominal wall reconstruction. Many techniques have been described for both primary or staged closure but sometimes neither of them is succesful in all patients. We are presenting the combined use of Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to improve the result in this difficult case. The use of VAC device is a well known procedure in the treatment of adult difficult wounds closure. It consists of a sponge applied directly on the abdominal wall defect, covered with a transparent dressing and connected to a controlled continuous negative pressure system [1]. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous concentration of human platelets in a small volume of plasma. Due to this combination it provides multiple growth and healing factors actively secreted by platelets which have been shown to begin and accelerate wound healing [2] [3]. The association between VAC and PRP was effective in the shrinkage and reduction of the abdominal defect. Fifteen months after the removal of the VAC device the fascia appears competent with a cutaneus scar that will need a plastic correction in the future. The VAC should be considered as a helpful and effective device in case of complicated giant gastroschisis or omphalocele when traditional treatment is not sufficient.

Anderson-Hynes dismembered ureteropyeloplasty has been the gold standard surgical treatment for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) caused either by crossing renal vessel or by a stenotic junction in children. Nowadays it is still discussed which could be the best surgical approach. All the techniques actually used have the goal to improve functional outcome and to reach better results in terms of reducing traumatic damage, postoperative pain and therefore reduction of hospitalization. We are presenting our experience in the treatment of UPJO by open dismembered pyeloplasty with a minimal invasive approach using the Alexis®(Applied Medical, Rancho Santa Margherita, CA) autostatic wound retractor.

Hydrogel wound dressings can play critical roles in wound healing protecting the wound from trauma or contamination and providing an ideal environment to support the growth of endogenous cells and promote wound *** work presents a self-assembling hydrogel dressing that can assist the wound repair process mimicking the hierarchical structure of skin extracellular *** this aim,the co-assembly behaviour of a carboxylated variant of xyloglucan(CXG)with a peptide amphiphile(PA-H3)has been investigated to generate hierarchical constructs with tuneable molecular composition,structure,and *** electron microscopy and circular dichroism at a low concentration shows that CXG and PA-H3 co-assemble into nanofibres by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions and further aggregate into nanofibre bundles and *** a higher concentration,CXG and PA-H3 yield hydrogels that have been characterized for their morphology by scanning electron microscopy and for the mechanical properties by smallamplitude oscillatory shear rheological measurements and compression tests at different CXG/PAH3 ratios.A preliminary biological evaluation has been carried out both in vitro with HaCat cells and in vivo in a mouse model.

Large-area Analysis of Soil Erosion and Landslides Induced by Rainfall: A Case of Unsaturated Shallow Deposits

Unsaturated shallow soil deposits may be affected by either superficial soil erosion or shallow landslides in adjacent or overlapping source areas and in different seasons when a different soil suction *** triggering analysis of both these processes is a relevant issue for the hazard analysis while the literature mostly provides specific approaches for erosion or for *** paper proposes a largearea analysis for a case study of Southern Italy,consisting of unsaturated shallow deposits of loose pyroclastic(air-fall) volcanic soils that have been repeatedly affected by erosion and landslides in special *** a past catastrophic event, the simulated source areas of shallow landslides are smaller than those observed in the field while the simulated eroded areas with thickness greater than 5cm are comparable with the in-situ evidences, if the analysis takes into account high rainfall intensity and a spatially variable soil cover *** in general, the results of the paper are consistent with the previous literature and also provide a methodological contribution about the application of distinct tools over large *** added value is that the paper shows how the combination of distinct large-area analyses may help with understanding the dominant slope instability *** once this goal is fully achieved, can specific physically-based analyses be confidently performed at detailed scales and for smaller specific areas.

We describe a case of a rare congenital heart disorder,scimitar syndrome,diagnosed in an adult woman presenting with dyspnea on exertion,chest pain and recurrent episodes of pulmonary *** hallmark of the syndrome is the presence of an enlarged anomalous pulmonary vein draining into the inferior vena *** tracking echocardiography,including the often-forgotten atrial strain evaluation,is a sensitive parameter that should be routinely used for a better clinical and prognostic evaluation of patients with congenital heart disease(CHD).

The Basilica of Santa maria di Collemaggio in L＇Aquila： Modern Provisional Measures

The case in analysis is Santa maria di Collemaggio, the church symbol of the town of L＇Aquila and the most important example of Romanesque style in Abruzzi, tragically damaged by the earthquake in 2009. The following paper starts with an accurate analysis of the Basilica, whose historical, stylistical cultural characteristics make it an unicum in the whole urban environment. The authors tried to identify in which way these values have been compromised or altered after the earthquake through several analysis （surveys, historical researches etc.） aiming at the recognition of collapses, the cracks profile, the structural transformations caused by the provisional measures： the goal is to provide a kind of Basilica ＂cognitive manual＂ that will be useful for the future interventions. This first analysis allowed to understand many aspects： on the one hand, the constructive phases and which damages were caused by past careless interventions of restoration, drawing attention to the vulnerability elements of the Basilica; on the other hand, the innovative technologies and materials of the post-seismic provisional measures and their exact location.

Functional Characterization of Bifidobacteria of Human Origin: A Case Study by the Students of Food Science and Technology of the University of Foggia (Southern Italy)

The aim of this paper was to study the potential technological and probiotic properties of bifidobacteria isolated from human feces. Bifidobacteria, naturally present in the dominant colonic microbiota, represent up to 25% of the cultivable faecal bacteria in adults and 80% in infants. Bifidobacteria have been shown to adhere and colonize in high numbers different types of cultured intestinal epithelial cells;moreover some authors reported that some strains are able to stabilize the intestinal microbiota during and after antibiotic therapy, modulate the immune system, protecting against chemically induced intestinal inflammation and reducing symptoms of colitis. Eight isolates of bifidobacteria were studied to assess their technological and probiotic traits;the technological characterization relied on the assessment of enzymatic activities (proteolytic and lipolytic activity), growth under various conditions (pH, temperature and addition of salt), acidifying ability and metabolism (arginine deamination, esculin, esculin hydrolysis and citrate metabolism). The study of the probiotic characteristics focused on the evaluation of the survival at low pH and with bile salts added, antibiotic resistance, and hydrophobic properties. As a result of this process, two promising strains were selected for further studies.

Is hyperhomocysteinemia relevant in patients with celiac disease?

AIM： TO investigate whether this might be related to the presence of hyperhomocysteinemia. METHODS： From January 1998 to December 2008, we evaluated the presence of hyperhomocysteinemia in a series of 165 adult celiac disease （CD） patients （138 females and 27 males, mean age 43 years）.RESULTS： Hyperhomocysteinemia was evident in 32 patients （19.3%）, although most of them had moderate levels （mean value 25 mcg/ml; range 15-30）. Only one patient had a history of myocardial infarction （heterozygosis for N5-N10-metil tetrahydrofolate reductase mutation）. CONCLUSION： The systematic assessment of hyperhomocysteinemia seems, at present, unjustified in CD patients.
