As part of efforts to reduce anthropogenic CO_(2) emissions by the steelmaking industry,this study investigated the direct reduction of industrially produced hematite pellets with H_(2) using the Doehlert experimental design to evaluate the effect of pellet diameter(10.5-16.5 mm),porosity(0.36-0.44),and temperature(600-1200℃).A strong interactive effect between temperature and pellet size was observed,indicating that these variables cannot be considered *** increase in temperature and decrease in pellet size considerably favor the reduction rate,while porosity did not show a relevant *** change in pellet size during the reduction was negligible,except at elevated temperatures due to crack formation.A considerable decrease in mechanical strength at high temperatures suggests a maximum process operating temperature of 900℃.Good predictive capacity was achieved using the modified grain model to simulate the three consecutive non-catalytic gas-solid reactions,considering different pellet sizes and porosities,changes during the reaction from 800 to 900℃.However,for other temperatures,different mechanisms of structural modifications must be considered in the *** results represent significant contributions to the development of ore pellets for CO_(2)-free steelmaking technology.

Antifungal activity of plant extracts with potential to control plant pathogens in pineapple

Rationale: leishmaniasis, caused by the protozoan leishmania and transmitted by sandflies, is endemic to the tropical and subtropical areas of Brazil. It is one of the neglected tropical diseases in the world. Patient concerns: A 20-month-old indigenous infant with severe malnutrition and Down’s syndrome presented with a facial ulcer for 5 months. Diagnosis: Giemsa staining of scraped ulcer tissues indicated the presence of the amastigote form of leishmania sp., and positive Montenegro’s intradermal test helped in diagnosing the condition as cutaneous leishmaniasis. Interventions: The child was hospitalized and received intravenous treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis(1 mg/kg/day of amphotericin B). Outcomes: The condition was cured with amphotericin B(1 mg/kg/day for 14 d). lessons: Because of infanticide practices in indigenous cultures, indigenous infants with Down’s syndrome rarely survive. Thus, no similar case has been reported in the literature.

AIM To evaluate the association between polymorphismsin glutathione S transferases(GSTs) and the risk of sporadic colorectal cancer(SCRC), tumor progression and the survival of *** A case-control study of 970 individuals from the Brazilian population was conducted(232 individuals from the case group with colorectal cancer and 738 individuals from the control group without a history of cancer). PCR multiplex and PCR-RFlP techniques were used to genotype the GST polymorphisms. The tumors were categorized according to the TNM classification: tumor extension(T), affected lymph nodes(N), and presence of metastasis(M). logistic regression, multiple logistic regression and survival analysis were used to analyze the data. The results are presented in terms of odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI). The level of significance was set at 5%(P ≤ 0.05).RESUlTS Age equal to or over 62 years(OR = 8.79; 95%CI: 5.90-13.09, P le gender(OR = 2.91; 95%CI: 1.74-4.37; P ciated with increased risk of SCRC. Analysis of the polymorphisms revealed an association between the GSTM1 polymorphisms and a risk of SCRC(OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 1.06-2.00; P = 0.02), as well as between GSTT1 and a reduced risk of the disease(OR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.43-0.98; P = 0.04). An interaction between the presence of the wild-type allele of GSTP1 Ile105 Val polymorphism and tobacco consumption on risk of SCRC(OR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.34-4.05; P = 0.05) was observed. Juvenile hemochromatosis(JH) is a rare condition classified as an autosomal recessive disorder that leads to severe iron absorption. JH usually affects people under the age of 30 and presents symptoms such as chronic liver damage,hypogonadotropic hypogonadism,cardiac diseases and endocrine dysfunctions. The present case reports a 29-year-old Brazilian woman with JH condition due to HAMP mutation(g.47G>A),treated with phlebotomies and deferasirox. She presented symptoms such as weakness,skin hyperpigmentation,joint pain in the shoulders and hands and amenorrhea. First laboratory tests showed altered biochemical parameters [serum ferritin(SF): 5696 ng/ml,transferrin saturation(TS): 85%]. After sessions of phlebotomies(450 ml every 15 d),the patient presented partial symptomatic improvements and biochemical parameters(SF: 1000 ng/ml,Hb: 11 g/dl). One year later,deferasirox(15 mg/kg per day) was introduced to the treatment,and the patient showed total symptomatic improvement,with significant clearing of the skin,SF: 169 ng/ml,and TS: 50%. Furthermore,after the combined deferasirox-phlebotomy therapy,magnetic resonance imaging measurements revealed normalized level for liver iron(30 μmol/g; reference value l/g). In conclusion,combined deferasirox-phlebotomy treatment was able to normalize iron levels and improve symptoms.
