Astrocytes,the main population of glial cells in the central nervous system(CNS),exert essential tasks for the control of brain tissue homeostasis,supporting neuron and other glial cell activity from the developmental stage to adult *** maintain the optimal functionality of the brain,astroglial cells are particularly committed to reacting to every change in tissue homeostatic conditions,from mild modifications of the physiological environment,a process called astrocyte activation,to the more severe alterations occurring in pathological situations causing astrocyte reactivity or reactive astrogliosis(escartin et al.,2021).During these reactive states,astrocytes mount an active,progressive response encompassing morphological,molecular,and interactional remodeling,leading to the acquisition of new functions and the loss of others,whose intensity,duration,and reversibility are dependent on the nature of the stimulus and regulated in a context-specific manner.

The female reproductive system consists of the ovaries,the female gonads,and the reproductive tract organs of the fallopian tubes,uterus,cervix,and *** functions to provide hormonal support and anatomical structure for the production of new offspring.A number of endogenous and exogenous factors can impact female reproductive health and fertility,including genetic vulnerability,medications,environmental exposures,age,nutrition,and *** date,due to the ethical concerns of using human subjects in biomedical research,the majority of studies use in vivo animal models and 2D cell/tissue culture models to study female ***,the complexity and species difference of the female reproductive system in humans make it difficult to compare to those of ***,the monolayered cells cultured on flat plastics or glass lose their 3D architecture as well as the physical and/or biochemical contacts with other cells in ***,all reproductive organs do not work alone but interconnect with each other and also with non-reproductive organs to support female reproductive,endocrine,and systemic *** facts suggest that there is an urgent and unmet need to develop representative,effective,and efficient in vitro models for studying human female *** prodigious advancements of bioengineering(e.g.,biomaterials,3D printing,and organ-on-a-chip)allow us to study female reproduction in an entirely new ***,we review recent advances that use bioengineering methods to study female reproduction,including the bioengineering models of the ovary,fallopian tube,uterus,embryo implantation,placenta,and reproductive disease.

egg parasitoids are known to use a wide range of chemicals, emitted by plants, host eggs or adults, for host selection. The effect of the sex pheromone components of the lepidopteran olive pests Prays oleae （Lepidoptera： Yponomeutidae） and Palpita unionalis （Lepidoptera： Pyralidae） was studied under laboratory conditions, on the foraging behaviour of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma oleae （Hymenoptera： Trichogrammatidae）. The re- sponse of T. oleae wasps to （Z）-7-tetradecenal and （e）-1 l-hexadecenal, major sex phero- mone components ofP. oleae and P. unionalis respectively, depended on the dose of the pheromone used in a Y-tube olfactometer bioassay. （e）-11-hexadecenal elicited maximum attraction （70%） at a dose of 1 pg, while a dose of 100 pg （Z）-7-tetradecenal attracted 80% of the tested wasps. （e）-11-hexadecenyl acetate, the second sex pheromone component of P. unionalis, and the binary blend of（e）-i 1-hexadecenyl acetate：（e）-11-hexadecenal （7：3） were not attractive at these doses. The results of this research are discussed in view that they may be considered as alternatives in the biological control of these pests.

Olfactory cues that indicate predation risk elicit a number of defensive behaviors in fishes, but whether they are sufficient to also induce morphological defenses has received little attention. Cichlids are characterized by a high level of morphological plasticity during development, and the few species that have been tested do exhibit defensive behaviors when exposed to alarm cues released from the damaged skin of conspecifics. We utilized young juvenile Nicaragua cichlids Hypsophrys nicaraguensis to test if the perception of predation risk from alarm cue （conspecific skin extract） alone induces an increased relative body depth which is a defense against gape-limited predators. After two weeks of exposure, siblings that were exposed to conspecific alarm cue increased their relative body depth nearly double the amount of those exposed to distilled water （control） and zebrafish Danio rerio alarm cue. We repeated our measurements over the last two weeks （12 and 14） of cue exposure when the fish were late-stage juveniles to test if the rate of increase was sustained; there were no differences in final dimensions between the three treatments. Our results show that 1） the Nicaragua cichlid has an innate response to conspecific alarm cue which is not a generalized response to an injured fish, and 2） this innate recognition ultimately results in developing a deeper body at a stage of the life history where predation risk is high [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 36-42, 2010].

The plant immune system is divided into two branches;one branch is based on the recognition of pathogenassociated molecular patterns(PAMP-triggered immunity),and the other relies on pathogenic effector detection(effector-triggered immunity).Despite each branch being involved in different complex mechanisms,both lead to transcription reprogramming and,thus,changes in plant *** study the defense mechanisms involved in the Brassica oleracea–Xanthomonas campestris ***(Xcc)interaction,we analyzed the plant transcriptome dynamics at 3 and 12 days postinoculation(dpi)by using massive analysis of 3′-cDNA *** identified more induced than repressed transcripts at both 3 and 12 dpi,although the response was greater at 12 *** in the expression of genes related to the early infection stages were only detected at 12 dpi,suggesting that the timing of triggered defenses is crucial to plant *** analyses in susceptible and resistant plants allowed us to highlight the potential role of two calcium-signaling proteins,CBP60g and SARD1,in the resistance against *** role was subsequently confirmed using Arabidopsis knockout mutants.

Meiosis is the specialized eukaryotic cell division that permits the halving of ploidy necessary for game- togenesis in sexually reproducing organisms, This involves a single round of DNA replication followed by two successive divisions. To ensure balanced segregation, homologous chromosome pairs must migrate to opposite poles at the first meiotic division and this means that they must recognize and pair with each other beforehand. Although understanding of the mechanisms by which meiotic chromosomes find and pair with their homologs has greatly advanced, it remains far from being fully understood. With some notable exceptions such as male Drosophila, the recognition and physical link- age of homologs at the first meiotic division involves homologous recombination. However, in addition to this, it is clear that many organisms, including plants, have also evolved a series of recombination-independent mechanisms to facili- tate homolog recognition and pairing. These implicate chromosome structure and dynamics, telomeres, centromeres, and, most recently, small RNAs. With a particular focus on plants, we present here an overview of understanding of these early, recombination-independent events that act in the pairing of homologous chromosomes during the first meiotic division,
