Effects of the availability of floral resources and neighboring plants on nectar robbery in a specialized pollination system

Many plants pollinated by nectar-foraging animals have to maintain a balance between legitimate visitor attraction strategies and mechanisms that minimize illegitimate *** study investigated how floral display and neighboring species composition influences nectar robbing by hummingbirds in the tropical ornithophilous herb Heliconia *** tested the role of inflorescence display,flower abundance,and neighboring species in the reduction of nectar robbing in *** results indicate that nectar robbing hummingbird activity was higher in moderately large inflorescence displays and that the frequency of nectar robbing in *** decreases with increased flower abundance and the presence of neighboring plant *** non-ornithophilous plants decreased the frequency of nectar robbing in *** flowers to a greater extent than ornithophilous *** results suggest that nectar robbing hummingbirds are attracted to similar conditions that attract legitimate visitors and that spatial aggregation and mixed-species displays may represent a mechanism to dilute nectar robbing effects at an individual level.

Florivory by the occupants of phytotelmata in flower parts can decrease host plant fecundity

Some types of plant accumulate liquid in their inflorescences creating *** environments protect the flowers against florivory,although they may be colonized by aquatic or semiaquatic florivorous insect larvae,whose effects on the fitness of the plants remain *** tested the hypothesis of floral antagonism by the occupants of phytotelmata,which predicts that florivory by the occupants of the phytotelmata represents a cost to the female fitness of the plant,reducing its *** manipulated experimentally the infestation by 3 florivores larvae species occupants of phytotelmata in inflorescences of Heliconia spathocircinata(Heliconiaceae)to test for negative direct trophic effects on the fecundity of the flowering and fruiting *** found that the foraging of the hoverfly(Syrphidae)and moth(Lepidoptera)larvae in the inflorescences contributed to a decline in the fecundity of the *** the lepidopteran impacted fecundity when foraging in both flowering and fruiting bracts,the syrphid only affected the fruiting bracts,which indicates that the nectar and floral tissue are the principal resource exploited by the *** contrast,soldier fly(Stratiomyidae)had a neutral effect on fecundity,while foraging in flowering or fruiting *** findings corroborate our hypothesis,that herbivory by the larval occupants represents cost to the host plant having *** negative influence of this foraging on plant fecundity will nevertheless depend on the consequences of the exploitation of resources,which vary considerably in ephemeral habitats such as the phytotalmanta of flower parts.

High‐temperature superconductors are a powerful technological option to be applied in the current scenario of energy *** applications include fault current limiters,power electrical cables,and electrical machines,for *** to the non‐linearities of superconductors,it is computationally costly to run real models of superconducting ***,it is of paramount importance to have a reliable and fast formulation to model superconducting *** paper proposes a new hybrid J‐A formulation to simulate superconducting *** new formulation is validated with 5 case studies,some of which are *** J‐A formulation agrees in all cases and has a smaller computation time when compared with the T‐A ***,due to the simple implementation,the proposed formulation allows the possibility of running the J and A formulations in the same order and presents itself as a potential feature to speed up and help the design of the superconducting devices.

The application of High‐Temperature Superconductor(HTS)coils made of coated conductors has been investigated for many years.A possible configuration for such coils is the jointless loop,also known as the ring *** double crossed loop coil(DCLC)has been successfully applied in superconducting magnetic bearings(SMBs).The design of SMBs with DCLCs requires flexible modelling to allow all parts of the device to be *** work proposes the T‐A formulation with a thin‐film approximation for modelling SMB with DCLCs in the finite element analysis framework.A 2D representation of the system is coupled with an external electric circuit to model the continuity of the lines that represent the parts of each jointless *** couple the T‐A formulation and the circuit,an average of the total electric field,with both resistive and inductive components,is applied to the *** total current computed by the circuit is applied to the T‐A *** proposed methodology was validated by comparison with levitation force experimental *** types of tests were simulated:five levitation force tests and three guidance force *** is shown that there is a limit to the behaviour of the levitation force related to the high‐loss *** this limit,the stack of DCLCs behaves as an equivalent *** this limit,a high‐loss state appears as a linear growth of the levitation *** is also shown that this high‐loss state in vertical displacement influences the lateral force.

Aims Soil plays an important role in the formation and heterogene-ity of habitats and thus can cause changes in vegetation struc-ture and plant *** differentiation between Cerrado/savanna and forest is well known,but the relationship between soil and habitats from savannic or forest formations still needs to be better understood,particularly in tropical ecotonal *** studied the association between attributes of plant com-munities,namely structure and diversity,and physicochemical characteristics of soils in the Caatinga domain at the transition to Cerrado in *** Chemical and physical analyses of soils were performed in samples of 38 plots from savannic formations and 30 plots from forest *** was characterized floristically and structurally in all plots,five habitats being assessed in each plant *** features and vegetation parameters were highly distinct among the different *** Findingsin general,forest habitats were more nutrient rich than savannic ***,soil variables showed effects both on vegetation structure and on its species diversity,more pronouncedly in the savannic *** were structurally distinct,and diversity differed between savannic and forest communities;however,a higher differentiation occurred when the savannic formation habitats were compared among *** plant diversity did not differ among forest formation habitats,soil attributes showed a close relationship with edaphic factors and can contribute for similar *** soil-vegetation relationship in highly diverse ecotonal landscapes is important from the conservation biology point of view and aid in the execution of proactive plans for the maintenance of ***,we noticed that diversity and soil behaves distinctly between savannic and forest communities.

Effects of chemical sterilization of the culture media,porous membranes and luminosity on in vitro culture of Eucalyptus grandis×Eucalyptus urophylla

Hybrid combinations of Eucalyptus have increased due to expansion of plantations into unconventional areas and to the search for higher quality ***,most of these species have difficulties surviving in vitro *** chlorine and sealing systems are often used to reduce contamination and increase gas *** aim of the present study is to evaluate the establishment,multiplication,elongation and adventitious rooting of *** × *** clones(C1 and C2) and four active chlorine concentrations(0.000%,0.001%,0.003%,and 0.005%) were tested in the establishment and multiplication *** sealing forms(W/M,1/M and 3/M) and the same four active chlorine concentrations were applied to the elongation *** luminosities(dark and light)and three sealings(W/M,1/M and 3/M) were tested during adventitious *** chlorine concentration of0.005% led to the lowest fungal contamination rate and to the highest in vitro *** chlorine concentration of 0.003% resulted in the greatest length and highest number of shoots per explant in the multiplication *** were no phytotoxicity problems and the quality of plants grown in an environment with active chlorine was maintained in comparison with those grown in an *** increase in gas exchange in ventilation systems had a positive impact on the in vitro growth and development of plants.

First genetic linkage map of Lathyrus cicera based on RNA sequencing-derived markers: Key tool for genetic mapping of disease resistance

The Lathyrus cicera transcriptome was analysed in response to rust(Uromyces pisi)infection to develop novel molecular breeding tools with potential for genetic mapping of resistance in this robust orphan legume *** RNA-seq library each was generated from control and rust-inoculated leaves from two *** genotypes with contrasting quantitative resistance,de novo assembled into contigs and sequence polymorphisms were *** toto,19,224 SNPs differentiate the susceptible from the partially resistant genotype’s *** addition,we developed and tested 341 expressed E-SSR markers from the contigs,of which 60.7%varied between the two *** genotypes.A first *** linkage map was created using part of the developed markers in a RIL population from the cross of the two *** map contains 307 markers,covered 724.2 cM and is organised in 7 major and 2 minor linkage groups,with an average mapping interval of 2.4 *** genic markers also enabled us to compare their position in *** map with the physical position of the same markers mapped on Medicago truncatula genome,highlighting a high macrosyntenic conservation between both *** study provides a large new set of genic polymorphic molecular markers with potential for mapping rust *** represents the first step towards genomics-assisted precision breeding in ***.

Strategies for the analysis of single-tree plot experiments in Eucalyptus plantations

To verify if the response by Eucalyptus clones in a single-tree plot is influenced by neighboring plants and to determine the effect of missing and/or dominated plants,seven eucalyptus trials in four Brazilian states were analyzed in a randomized complete block design with one plant/plot and 30 *** annual increment(MAI,m^(3)ha^(-1)per year)was determined for three-year-old *** influence of neighboring clones was estimated by a linear regression coefficient between the MAI of each clone/plot and the average of a clonal MAI and its eight *** determine the effect of missing and/or dominated trees,a correction between the MAI and the area available/plant was *** analysis considered unadjusted and adjusted data for missing and dominated *** of accuracy and index of coincidence were used to compare the *** single-tree plots,clone performances were not influenced by neighboring *** accuracy was not increased by any of the adjustments employed and the clone ranking was not altered,and therefore did not justify their use.
