Factors associated with H pylori epidemiology in symptomatic children in Buenos Aires,Argentina

AIM： To determine prevalence of H pylori infection in symptomatic children in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and to investigate factors associated with HpyloH positivity. METHODS： A total of 395 children with upper gastrointestinal symptoms referred to the Gastroenterology Unit of the Children Hospital ＂Sor Maria Ludovica＂ were evaluated for the presence of H py/or/by the ^13C-Urea Breath Test （^13C-UBT）. A questionnaire was applied to the recruited population. RESULTS： Prevalence of H pylo H infection was 40.0% in this population （mean age 9.97 ± 3.1 years）. The factors associated with H py/or/positivity were number of siblings （P 〈 0.001）, presence of pet cats （P = 0.03） and birds （P = 0.04） in the household, and antecedents of gastritis among family members （P = 0.01）. After multivariate analysis, number of siblings [Odds ratio （OR） = 1.39; 95% CI, 1.20-1.61] and contact with pet cats （OR = 1.76; 95% CI, 1.00-3.09） remained as variables associated with H pylori infection. CONCLUSION： The prevalence of H pylori infection in children with upper gastrointestinal symptoms in Argentina was similar to that reported in developed countries. Children from families with a higher crowding index and presence of pet cats have a higher risk of being colonized with Hpylori.

Survival effects of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages in the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens

The ability of mosquitoes to transmit a pathogen is affected,among other factors,by their survival rate,which is partly modulated by their *** microbiota is acquired during the larval phase and modified during their development and adult feeding behavior,being highly dependent on environmental *** residues including antibiotics are widespread pollutants potentially being present in mosquito breeding waters likely affecting their ***,we used Culex pipiens mosquitoes to assess the impact of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages on the survival rate of adult ***-collected larvae were randomly assigned to two treatments:larvae maintained in water supplemented with antibiotics and control *** adults were subsequently assigned to each of two treatments,fed with sugar solution with antibiotics and fed only with sugar solution(controls).Larval exposure to antibiotics significantly increased the survival rate of adult females that received a control *** addition,the effect of adult exposure to antibiotics on the survival rate of both male and female mosquitoes depended on the number of days that larvae fed ad libitum in the laboratory before *** particular,shorter larval ad libitum feeding periods reduced the survival rate of antibiotic-treated adult mosquitoes compared with those that emerged after a longer larval feeding *** differences were not found in control adult *** results extend the current understanding of the impact of antibiotic exposure of mosquitoes on a key component of vectorial capacity,that is the vector survival rate.

Background:Dietary specialization should arise when there is a relatively high abundance of a particular resource,where animals may select food items to obtain an optimal diet that maximizes energy ***‑bodied psittacines frequently exhibit a narrow dietary niche with specific habitat use,but few studies have determined whether psittacines select food resources,and how this influences habitat ***:We established fruiting phenology transects to evaluate food resource availability for the large‑bodied Military Macaw(Ara militaris)in semi‑deciduous,deciduous,and pine‑oak forest at two sites along the coast of Jalisco,during the dry season when macaws are *** also determined Military Macaw diet by observations of foraging macaws along transect routes,and conducted bromatological analysis of the nutritional content of the most consumed ***:Military Macaws used six plant species as food items during the dry season,and had a narrow dietary niche(Levins’B=0.28),with 56%of foraging macaws consuming the seeds of Hura *** food resources were recorded in pine‑oak forest during the dry season,with food resources and foraging by macaws concentrated in tropical deciduous and semi‑deciduous forest,where *** was the most abundant fruiting tree *** considering the proportional availability of food resources,we determined a broad Hurlbert dietary niche breadth of H=0.67,indicating that Military Macaws consumed food resources according to their ***,the seeds of *** were an important source of protein,carbohydrates,minerals and moisture,and the hard fruitcasing means that these seeds are exclusively available for ***:By concentrating their diet on the most abundant resources,Military Macaws may increase foraging efficiency in the dry *** high nutrient content also means that concentrating the diet on seeds of *** may be an optimal foraging strategy for Military Macaws

In the last 30 years,the scientific community has developed and proposed different models and numerical approaches for the study of vibrations induced by railway *** of them are formulated in the frequency/wave number domain and with a 2.5D ***-dimensional numerical models formulated in the time/space domain are less frequently used,mainly due to their high computational ***,these models present very attractive characteristics,such as the possibility of considering nonlinear behaviors or the modelling of excess pore pressure and non-homogeneous and non-periodic geometries in the longitudinal direction of the *** this study,two 3D numerical approaches formulated in the time/space domain are compared and experimentally *** first one consists of a finite element approach and the second one of a finite difference *** experimental validation in an actual case situated in Carregado(Portugal)shows an acceptable fitting between the numerical results and the actual measurements for both ***,there are some differences among *** study therefore includes some recommendations for their use in practical soil dynamics and geotechnical engineering.

Sub-10nm nanogap fabrication on suspended glassy carbon nanofibers

Glassy carbon nanofibers(GCNFs)are considered promising candidates for the fabrication of nanosensors for biosensing ***,in part due to their great stability,carbon electrodes with sub-10 nm nanogaps represent an attractive platform for probing the electrical characteristics of *** fabrication of sub-10 nm nanogap electrodes in these GCNFs,which is achieved by electrically stimulating the fibers until they break,was previously found to require fibers shorter than 2µm;however,this process is generally hampered by the limitations inherent to photolithographic *** this work,to obtain nanogaps on the order of 10 nm without the need for sub-2µm GCNFs,we employed a fabrication strategy in which the fibers were gradually thinned down by continuously monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of the fiber and adjusting the applied voltage *** further reduce the nanogap size,we studied the mechanism behind the thinning and eventual breakdown of the suspended GCNFs by controlling the environmental conditions and pressure during the *** this approach,which includes performing the experiments in a high-vacuum chamber after a series of carbon dioxide(CO 2)purging cycles,nanogaps on the order of 10nm were produced in suspended GCNFs 52µm in length,much longer than the~2µm GCNFs needed to produce such small gaps without the procedure employed in this ***,the electrodes showed no apparent change in their shape or nanogap width after being stored at room temperature for approximately 6 months.

Dear Editor Abscisic acid （ABA） is the main phytohormone involved in adaptive crop responses to drought. ABA signaling relies on the family of pyrabactin resistance 1/PYRl-like/regulatory components of ABA receptors （PYR/PYL/RCAR）, which upon ABA binding form high-affinity ternary complexes with clade A protein phosphatases type 2C （PP2Cs） and inhibit them （Cutler et al., 2010）. This results in the activation of an SnRK2-dependent phosphorylation cascade affecting a high number of targets in the plant cells, regulating stomatal aper- ture and the expression of stress-responsive genes （Cutler et al., 2010）.

Eutrophication Levels through San Pedro-Mezquital River Basin

This paper presents an eutrophication diagnosis for the San Pedro-Mezquital basin at Mexico;procedure accounted to set up 10 sampling points distributed along the river pathway, sample collection was done at two extreme conditions: rainy season and dry season. Five parameters were analyzed in this work: pH, % Dissolved Oxygen, reactive phosphorus, and nitrogen species as nitrate and ammonia compounds. Obtained concentrations were statistically analyzed to establish if there were significant differences among sites and between seasons;being the dry season the one with higher nutrient content, ammonia can be considered statistical significance due to the total values found for each season. Calculation of the Karydis eutrophication index for each parameter showed that more damaged sites were those nearby the cities, and most of the sampled sites belonged to the eutrophic category.

Seroepidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection in general population in a northern Mexican city

Background: The seroepidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection in general population in Durango City, Mexico has not been previously studied. Aims: To determine the seroprevalence of anti-H. pylori antibodies in the general population in Durango City, Mexico;and to determine socio-demographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics of the general population associated with H. pylori seropositivity. Methods: The prevalence of anti-H. pylori IgG antibodies was examined in 345 individuals in Durango City, Mexico, using enzyme-linked immunoassays. Socio-demographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics of the general population associated with H. pylori seroprevalence were also investigated. Results: In total, 231 (67%) of the 345 participants (mean age, 45.3. ± 17.5 years) had H. pylori IgG antibodies, 146 (63.2%) of whom had H. pylori IgG antibody levels higher than 100 U/mL. Both H. pylori seroprevalence and antibody levels increased significantly with age, and were similar in males and females. An increased H. pylori seroprevalence was found in subjects with low education and employed. In contrast, a low seroprevalence was found in subjects living in suburban areas. One of four subjects with gastritis symptoms had anti-H. pylori antibodies. The seroprevalence of H. pylori was significantly higher among women with abortion history than among those without such history. Multivariate analysis of behavioral variables showed that H. pylori seropositivity was negatively associated with raising farm animals (OR = 0.48;95% CI: 0.25-0.91;P = 0.02). Conclusions: In the general population studied, H. pylori seroreactivity increased significantly with age, not only in frequency but also in intensity. Residence, education, and occupation of the study population influenced the seropositivity rate of H. pylori.

BACKGROUND The challenges for inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)diagnostics are to discriminate it from gut conditions with similar symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome(IBS),to distinguish IBD subtypes,to predict disease progression,and to establish the risk to develop colorectal cancer(CRC).Alterations in gut microbiota have been proposed as a source of information to assist in IBD *** prausnitzii(***),its phylogroups,and Escherichia coli(***)have been reported as potential biomarkers,but their performance in challenging IBD diagnostic situations remains *** hypothesize that bacterial biomarkers based in these species may help to discriminate these conditions of complex *** To evaluate the usefulness of indices calculated from the quantification of these species as biomarkers to aid in IBD *** A retrospective study of 131 subjects(31 controls(H);45 Crohn’s disease(CD),25 ulcerative colitis(UC),10 IBS,and 20 CRC patients)was performed to assess the usefulness of bacterial biomarkers in ***,the performance of biomarkers in faeces was studied in 29 stool samples(19 CD,10 UC).Relative abundances of total ***(FP),its phylogroups(PHGI and PHGII),and ***(E)quantification were determined by *** were combined to calculate the FP-E index,the PHGI–E index and the PHGII-E *** accuracy to discriminate among conditions was measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC).RESULTS In biopsies,FP-E index was good for discriminating IBS from CD(AUC=0.752)while PHGII-E index was suitable for discriminating IBS from UC(AUC=0.632).The FP-E index would be the choice to discriminate IBD from CRC,especially from all UC subtypes(AUC≥0.875),regardless of the activity status of the *** between UC patients that had the longest disease duration and those with CRC featured slightly lower AUC *** differentiation in IB
