background Pediatric cancer survivors are at increased risk of muscle weakness and low areal bone mineral density(abMD).However,the prevalence of muscle strength deficits is not well documented,and the associations of muscle strength with abMD are unknown in this ***,this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of upper-and lower-body muscle strength deficits and to examine the associations of upper-and lower-body muscle strength with age-,sex,and race-specific abMD Z-scores at the total body,total hip,femoral neck,and lumbar *** This cross-sectional study included 116 pediatric cancer survivors(12.1±3.3 years old,mean±SD;42.2%female).Upper-and lower-body muscle strength were assessed by handgrip and standing long jump test,***‑energy X‑ray absorptiometry was used to measure abMD(g/cm2).Associations between muscle strength and abMD were evaluated in multivariable linear regression *** regression was used to evaluate the contribution of muscle strength(1-decile lower)to the odds of having low abMD(Z-score≤1.0).All analyses were adjusted for time from treatment completion,radiotherapy exposure,and body mass *** More than one-half of survivors were within the 2 lowest deciles for upper-(56.9%)and lower-body muscle strength(60.0%)in comparison to age-and sex-specific reference *** strength deficits were associated with lower abMD Z-scores at all sites(b=0.133–0.258,p=0.001–0.032).Each 1-decile lower in upper-body muscle strength was associated with 30%–95%higher odds of having low abMD Z-scores at all *** 1-decile lower in lower-body muscle strength was associated with 35%–70%higher odds of having low abMD Z-scores at total body,total hip,and femoral *** Muscle strength deficits are prevalent in young pediatric cancer survivors,and such deficits are associated with lower abMD Z-scores at all *** results suggest that interventions designed to improve muscle strength in t

Immediate and late effects of chronic stress in the testes of prepubertal and adult rats

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic stress on the testes of prepubertal and adult rats and to evaluate whether any alterations could be reversed when stress induction is ended. Seventy-six male rats were assigned to eight groups depending on the type of treatment （control or stressed）, the age at which stress was initiated （prepubertal or adult）, and the time of evaluation （immediate or late）. Stress stimuli were applied for 6 weeks. Stressed prepubertal and adult rats evaluated immediately after the last stress stimulus were included in SP-I and SA-I groups, respectively. The late prepubertal （SP-L） and adult （SA-L） groups of stressed rats were evaluated 6 weeks after the last stress stimulus. Age-matched rats were used as controls （CP-I, CA-I, CP-L, and CA-L groups）. Application of stress stimuli to rats in the SP-I group resulted in body weight and seminiferous tubule diameter reduction. The rats in the SA-I group also showed several functional （testosterone level and sperm parameter） and morphological （testicular weight and seminiferous tubule diameter） reductions. The rats in the SP-L group showed increased body weight and intertubular compartment volumetric and absolute densities and reduced tubular compartment volumetric density. The rats in the SA-L group presented only reduced sperm viability. Stress stimuli promoted changes in the rats in all the study groups. The testes of the adult rats were the most affected by chronic stress. However, the stressed adult rats recovered well from the testicular alterations.

Validation of material point method for soil fluidisation analysis

The main aim of this paper is to describe and analyse the modelling of vertical column tests that undergo fluidisation by the application of a hydraulic gradient.A recent advancement of the material point method（MPM）,allows studying both stationary and non-stationary fluid flow while interacting with the solid *** fluidisation initiation and post-fluidisation processes of the soil will be investigated with an advanced MPM formulation（Double Point）in which the behavior of the solid and the liquid phase is evaluated separately,assigning to each of them a set of material points（MPs）.The result of these simulations are compared to analytic solutions and measurements from laboratory *** work is used as a benchmark test for the MPM double point formulation in the Anura3D software and to verify the feasibility of the software for possible future engineering applications.

High-throughput computational discovery of In_(2)Mn_(2)O_(7) as a high Curie temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor for spintronics

Materials combining strong ferromagnetism and good semiconducting properties are highly desirable for spintronic applications(e.g.,in spin-filtering devices).In this work,we conduct a search for concentrated ferromagnetic semiconductors through highthroughput computational *** screening reveals the limited availability of semiconductors combining ferromagnetism and a low effective *** identify the manganese pyrochlore oxide In_(2)Mn_(2)O_(7) as especially promising for spin transport as it combines low electron effective mass(0.29m0),a large exchange splitting of the conduction band(1.1 eV),stability in air,and a Curie temperature(about 130 K)among the highest of concentrated ferromagnetic *** rationalise the high performance of In_(2)Mn_(2)O_(7) by the unique combination of a pyrochlore lattice favouring ferromagnetism with an adequate alignment of O–2p,Mn–3d,and In–5s forming a dispersive conduction band while enhancing the Curie temperature.

The Ornithodolite as a tool to quantify animal space use and habitat selection: a case study with birds diving in tidal waters

Animal-attached technologies can be powerful means to quantify space use and behavior;however,there are also ethical implications associated with capturing and instrumenting ***,tagging approaches are not necessarily well-suited for examining the movements of multiple individuals within specific,local areas of ***,we assess a method of quantifying animal space use based on a modified theodolite with an inbuilt laser *** a database of>4200 tracks of migrating birds,we show that detection distance in-creases with bird body mass(range 5 g to>10 kg).The maximum distance recorded to a bird was 5500 m and measurement error was≤5 m for targets within this distance range:a level comparable to methods such as GPS *** go on to present a case study where this method was used to assess habitat selection in seabirds operating in dynamic coastal waters close to a tidal *** positional data with outputs from a hydrographic model revealed that great cormorants(Phalacrocorax carbo)appeared to be highly selective of current characteristics in space and time,exploiting areas where mean current speeds werebulent energy levels were *** birds also oriented into tidal currents during *** together,this suggests that collision risks are low for cormorants at this site,as the 2 conditions avoided by cormorants(high mean current speeds and turbulence levels)are associated with operational tidal ***-all,we suggest that this modified theodolite system is well-suited to the quantification of movement in small areas associated with particular development strategies,including sustainable energy devices.

Gene expression and physiological responses to salinity and water stress of contrasting durum wheat genotypes

Elucidating the relationships between gene expression and the physiological mechanisms remains a bottleneck in breeding for resistance to salinity and drought. This study related the expression of key target genes with the physiological performance of durum wheat under different combinations of salinity and irrigation. The candidate genes assayed included two encoding for the DREb（dehydration responsive element binding） transcription factors Ta DREb1 A and Ta DREb2 b, another two for the cytosolic and plastidic glutamine synthetase（Ta GS1 and Ta GS2）, and one for the specific Na^＋/H^＋ vacuolar antiporter（Ta NHX1）. Expression of these genes was related to growth and different trait indicators of nitrogen metabolism（nitrogen content, stable nitrogen isotope composition, and glutamine synthetase and nitrate reductase activities）, photosynthetic carbon metabolism（stable carbon isotope composition and different gas exchange traits） and ion accumulation. Significant interaction between genotype and growing conditions occurred for growth, nitrogen content, and the expression of most *** general terms, higher expression of Ta GS1, Ta GS2,Ta DREb2 b, and to a lesser extent of Ta NHX1 were associated with a better genotypic performance in growth, nitrogen, and carbon photosynthetic metabolism under salinity and water stress. However, Ta DREb1 A was increased in expression under stress compared with control conditions, with tolerant genotypes exhibiting lower expression than susceptible ones.

Genetic distinctions between autoimmune hepatitis in Italy and North America

AIM: Our goals were to analyze the known genetic predispositions for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in AIH Italian population and to compare them with North American counterparts. METHODS: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) b8, C7, DR3, DR4, DR7, DR11, DR13, DQ2 and the b8-DR3-DQ2 phenotype were determined by microlymphocytotoxicity and polymerase chain reaction in 74 Italian patients (57 with type 1 and 17 with type 2 AIH) and 149 North American patients with type 1 AIH, and in adequate controls. RESULTS: b8-DR3-DQ2 occurred more frequently in Italian patients with type 1 AIH than in Italian controls (30% vs 7%, Pbut less frequently than in North American counterparts (30% vs 48%, P= 0.02). DR4 occurred less frequently in Italian patients with type 1 AIH (23% vs 43%, P= 0.01) and in controls (16% vs 34%, P= 0.0003) than in North American counterparts. No differences were found in alleles' frequency between type 1 and type 2 Italian AIH patients. DR11 had a frequency lower in type 1 Italian AIH patients than controls (17% vs 35%, P= 0.01). CONCLUSION: HLA DR4 is not associated with AIH in Italy. The known HLA risk factors for AIH occur similarly in Italian patients with type 1 and type 2 AIH, and they are less frequent than in North American patients. b8-DR3-DQ2 is the predominant phenotype of type 1 AIH also in Italy, and HLA DR11 may be a regionally distinctive protective factor against type 1 AIH.

On February 16,2021,an artificial object moving slowly over the Mediterranean was recorded by the Spanish Meteor Network(SPMN).based on astrometric measurements,we identified this event as the reentry engine burn of a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle’s upper *** study this event in detail,we adapted the plane intersection method for near-straight meteoroid trajectories to analyze the slow and curved orbits associated with artificial *** corroborate our results,we approximated the orbital elements of the upper stage using four pieces of“debris”cataloged by the ***’s Combined Space Operations *** on these calculations,we also estimated the possible deorbit hazard zone using the MSISE90 model *** provide guidance regarding the interference that these artificial bolides may generate in fireball ***,because artificial bolides will likely become more frequent in the future,we point out the new role that ground-based detection networks can play in the monitoring of potentially hazardous artificial objects in near-Earth space and in determining the strewn fields of artificial space debris.

There is no effective treatment to face Alzheimer’s disease *** molecules are a good approach against the multiple physiopathological events associated with its development and *** this context,N-((5-(3-(1-benzylpiperidin-4-yl)propoxy)-1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)methyl)-N-methylprop-2-yn-1-amine(ASS234)has been tested achieving promising ***234 has demonstrated to cross the blood-brain barrier in vivo,and a good in silico safety profile being less toxic than ***,ASS234 reversibly inhibits human acetyl-and butyryl-cholinesterase,and irreversibly inhibits human monoamine oxidase A and ***,this multitarget molecule has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties,and inhibitsΑβ1–42 andΑβ1–40 *** about the mechanism of action,several signaling pathways related to Alzheimer’s disease had been explored showing that ASS234 induces the wingless-type MMTV integration site(Wnt)family and several members of the heat shock proteins family and moreover counteracts neuroinflammatory and oxidative stress-related genes promoting the induction of several key antioxidant ***,in vivo experiments with ASS234 in C57bL/6j mice displayed its ability to reduce amyloid plaque burden and gliosis in the cortex and hippocampus,ameliorating scopolamine-induced learning *** we gather the information regarding ASS234 evaluated so far,showing its ability to face different targets,necessary to counteract a neurodegenerative disease as complex as the Alzheimer’s disease.
