Activity Induced by a naphthalene-Prazosin Derivative on Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

In this study, a new naphthalene-prazosin derivative (compound 5) was synthetized with the objective of evaluating its activity on ischemia/reperfusion injury. The Langendorff technique was used to evaluate the effect of the compound 5 on ischemia/reperfusion injury. Additionally, the mechanism of action involved in the activity exerted by the compound 5 on perfusion pressure and coronary resistance was evaluated by measuring left ventricular pressure in absence or presence of following compounds;prazosin, metoprolol, indomethacin and nifedipine. The results showed that the compound 5 reduced infarct size compared with the control conditions. Other results showed that the compound 5 significantly increases (p = 0.05) the perfusion pressure and coronary resistance in isolated rat heart. In addition, other data indicate that the compound 5 increases left ventricular pressure in a dose-dependent manner (0.001 to 100 nM);however, this phenomenon was significantly inhibited by nifedipine at a dose of 1 nM (p = 0.05) and this effect was independent of cAMP levels. In conclusion, these data suggest that the naphthalene-prazosin derivative exerts a cardio protective effect via the calcium channels activation and consequently induces changes in the left ventricular pressure levels. This phenomenon results in a decrease of myocardial necrosis after ischemia and reperfusion.

Current global trends in the incidence of pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease

AIM To perform a comprehensive review and provide an up-to-date synopsis of the incidence and trends of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD). METHODS We systematically searched the MEDLInE(source Pub Med), EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines(period: 1985-2018) to identify studies reporting population-based data on the incidence of pediatriconset(nosis) IBD in full manuscripts. Two authors carried out screening and data extraction. Choropleth interactive maps and temporal trends were used to illustrate the international differences and incidences of and changes in IBD and *** In total, one hundred forty studies reporting data from 38 countries were considered in this review. The highest annual pediatric incidences of IBD were 23/100000 person-years in Europe, 15.2/100000 in north America, and 11.4/100000 in Asia/the Middle East and Oceania. The highest annual incidences of Crohn's disease(CD) were 13.9/100000 in north America and 12.3/100000 in Europe. The highest annual incidences of ulcerative colitis(UC) were 15.0/100000 in Europe and 10.6/100000 in north America. The highest annual incidences of IBD-unclassified(IBD-U) were 3.6/100000 in Europe and 2.1/100000 in north America. In the time-trend analyses, 67% of CD, 46% of UC and 11% of IBD-U studies reported an increasing incidence(P ncreasing among firstgeneration of migrant *** Globally, the incidence of IBD varies greatly by geographical areas. The steadily increasing incidence of pediatric IBD over time indicates its emergence as a global disease, suggesting that studies should investigate the environmental risk factors among pediatric cohorts.

Loneliness is considered a public health problem that negatively affects wellbeing,especially in the older *** Latin-American countries,most of the older population live with their *** this is thought to diminish feelings of loneliness,there is scarce data to support *** objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of loneliness and evaluate its association with objective social networks,family functioning and perception of social support,in a sample of older people from Santiago,Chile.A survey was conducted of a representative sample of community older people(60–97 years)from Santiago,Chile,using the UCLA abbreviated scale of *** regression was performed to test the variables related to the loneliness of older people.A total of 1,217 older people were interviewed.88%were living with at least one person at home and 92%had living *** the UCLA abbreviated scale,45%were found to perceive feelings of loneliness at least some of the *** regression showed significant association between loneliness and family dysfunction;depressive symptoms;living alone;not having a partner(widowed,separated or single);having little contact with relatives and friends;feeling a lack of social support;and sensation of poor *** is a prevalent public health problem in this older Latin-American *** accompanied does not protect against loneliness,particularly in vulnerable groups such as those with depression,or when there are family conﬂ*** high prevalence of loneliness strongly conveys the need for public health policies to address loneliness in older people.

Understanding The Restavek Phenomenon in Haiti Through Storytelling and Film

Known as the Pearl of the Antilles, Haiti was the first black republic to win its independence from the French in an uprising by slaves. Two hundred years after the revolt, Haiti＇s children, the most vulnerable population of the nation, endure modem day slavery. Extreme social, economic, and political instability have led the country to adopt and accept this practice. This qualitative study reveals audiences＇ narratives of their experiences as guardians of Restaveks and their reflections after watching the documentary film Blooming Hope （2010）. The documentary features Tata Dumasie, an artisan woman who narrates her life story growing up as a Restavek. This ethnographic research concludes that documentary films serve as tools for popular education. Furthermore, narrative discourse can reconstruct identities of former Restaveks and positively transform guardians＇ perceptions of the Restavek phenomenon.

Human intestinal microbiota create a complex polymi-crobial ecology. This is characterised by its high population density, wide diversity and complexity of interaction. Any dysbalance of this complex intestinal microbiome, both qualitative and quantitative, might have serious health consequence for a macro-organism, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO).SIBO is defined as an increase in the number and/or alteration in the type of bacteria in the upper gastro-intestinal tract. There are several endogenous defence mechanisms for preventing bacterial overgrowth: gastric acid secretion, intestinal motility, intact ileo-caecal valve, immunoglobulins within intestinal secretion and bacte-riostatic properties of pancreatic and biliary secretion. Aetiology of SIBO is usually complex, associated with disorders of protective antibacterial mechanisms (e.g. achlorhydria, pancreatic exocrine insuff iciency, immuno-deficiency syndromes), anatomical abnormalities (e.g. small intestinal obstruction, diverticula, f istulae, surgical blind loop, previous ileo-caecal resections) and/or motility disorders (e.g. scleroderma, autonomic neuropathy in diabetes mellitus, post-radiation enteropathy, small intestinal pseudo-obstruction). In some patients more than one factor may be involved. Symptoms related to SIBO are bloating, diarrhoea, malabsorption, weight loss and malnutrition. The gold standard for diagnosing SIBO is still microbial investigation of jejunal aspirates. noninvasive hydrogen and methane breath tests are most commonly used for the diagnosis of SIBO using glucose or lactulose. Therapy for SIBO must be com-plex, addressing all causes, symptoms and complica-tions, and fully individualised. It should include treatment of the underlying disease, nutritional support and cyclical gastro-intestinal selective antibiotics. Prognosis is usually serious, determined mostly by the underlying disease that led to SIBO.

Hyperphosphatemia after sodium phosphate laxatives in low risk patients:Prospective study

AIM:To establish the frequency of hyperphosphate-mia following the administration of sodium phosphate laxatives in low-risk patients. METHODS:One hundred consecutive ASAⅠ-Ⅱindividuals aged 35-74 years,who were undergoing colonic cleansing with oral sodium phosphate(OSP) before colonoscopy were recruited for this prospective *** criteria:congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease,diabetes,liver cirrhosis,intestinal obstruction,decreased bowel motility,increased bowel permeability,and *** day before colonoscopy,all the participants entered a 24-h period of diet that consisted of 4 L of clear fluids with sugar or honey and 90 mL(60 g)of OSP in two 45-mL doses,5 h *** phosphate was measured before and after the administration of the laxative. RESULTS:The main demographic data(mean±SD) were:age,58.9±8.4 years;height,163.8±8.6 cm; weight,71±13 kg;body mass index,26±4;women, 66%.Serum phosphate increased from 3.74±0.56 to 5.58±1.1 mg/dL,which surpassed the normal value (2.5-4.5 mg/dL)in 87%of the *** highest serum phosphate was 9.6 mg/*** and creatinine remained within normal ***-treatment OSP se-rum phosphate concentration correlated inversely with glomerular filtration rate(Pnd weight(PnCLUSIOn:In low-risk,well-hydrated patients, the standard dose of OSP-laxative-induced hyperphos-phatemia is related to body weight.

Retrospective self-reported weight changes during childhood and adolescence are not good predictors of metabolic syndrome risk factors in Mexican young adults

The purpose of the study was to examine whether retrospective self-reported weight changes during childhood and adolescence were associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors in Mexican young adults. Mexican college applicants to the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico, 18 to 25 years old (n = 4187) who had applied for the 2009 academic year were included in the study. Participants underwent a health screening—anthropometrics and blood drawn—and completed a questionnaire. Five major weight change categories were defined based on self-reported weight during childhood and adolescence: consistently normal, consistently underweight, consistently overweight/ obese, weight gain, and weight loss. Most participants self-reported being normal weight during childhood (58.7%) and adolescence (58.3%). Only a small proportion reported being overweight or obese during childhood (10.1%) or adolescence (15.9%). Weight change patterns during childhood and adolescence were marked by overall stability: 40.1% of participants were consistently normal, 15.6% underweight and 3.6% overweight/obese. Among those whose weight changed, 25.0% gained weight and 15.7% lost weight. In regression analyses, weight change categories based on self-reported weight statuses during childhood and adolescence were not associated with current metabolic syndrome risk factors after controlling for measured current BMI. Studies addressing the association between weight gains in early life with metabolic syndrome outcomes in early adulthood should not rely on recalled weight status during early life alone.
