Among collagen members in the collagen superfamily,type XIX collagen has raised increasing interest in relation to its structural and biological *** XIX collagen is a Fibril-Associated collagen with Interrupted Triple helices member,one main subclass of collagens in this *** collagen contains a triple helix composed of three polypeptide segments aligned in parallel and it is associated with the basement membrane zone in different *** molecular structure of type XIX collagen consists of five collagenous domains,cOL1 to cOL5,interrupted by six non-collagenous domains,NcI to *** most relevant domain by which this collagen exerts its biological roles is NcI domain that can be cleavage enzymatically to release matricryptins,exerting anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic effect in murine and human models of *** physiological conditions,type XIX collagen expression decreases after birth in different tissues although it is necessary to keep its basal levels,mainly in skeletal muscle and hippocampal and telencephalic interneurons in ***,in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,altered transcript expression levels show a novel biological effect of this collagen beyond its structural role in basement membranes and its anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic *** XIX collagen can exert a compensatory effect to ameliorate the disease progression under neurodegenerative conditions specific to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in transgenic SOD1 G93 A mice and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis *** novel biological role highlights its nature as prognostic biomarker of disease progression in and as promising therapeutic target,paving the way to a more precise prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Tillage and no-tillage effects on physical and chemical properties of an Argiaquoll soil under long-term crop rotation in Buenos Aires, Argentina

No-tillage systems are able to reduce the negative effects of agricultural intensification on soil properties. However, knowledge of long-term impacts of no-tillage systems on soil properties is insufficient. It is essential to know which soil quality indicators are the most sensitive to management practices in each particular environment. Therefore, the objective of this work is to determine which soil quality prop-erties are more sensitive to the impact of two tillage systems in a vertic Argiaquoll soil from Buenos Aires, Argentina. This work started in 2006 and included crop rotation and tillage systems, including both tillage and no-tillage. Physical and chemical properties were measured in three consecutive years (2013-2015) at two depths (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm). The tillage system modified soil physical and chemical properties, mainly in the surface layer. No-tillage showed significantly higher bulk density (2013-2015 p metric moisture (2013;2014 p c carbon (2013-2015 p ce of a heavy rain (2013;2015 pcantly greater under tillage. The tillage system did not affect hydraulic conductivity, total nitrogen and extractable phosphorus from the surface, nor physical and chemical properties from the second depth. No-tillage alleviates, but is not enough to mitigate, the loss of soil organic carbon and aggregate stability caused by continuous cropping in this vertic Argiaquall. Bulk density, organic carbon, aggregates stability and saturation are indicators for future studies performed in environments with similar soil and climate conditions.

Phenolic metabolism and molecular mass distribution of polysaccharides in cellulose-deficient maize cells

As a consequence of the habituation to low levels of dichlobenil （DcB）, cultured maize cells presented an altered hemicellulose cell fate with a lower proportion of strongly wall-bound hemicelluloses and an increase in soluble extracellular polymers released into the culture medium. The aim of this study was to investigate the relative molecular mass distributions of polysaccharides as well as phenolic metabolism in cells habituated to low levels of DcB （1.5 μm）. Generally, cell wall bound hemicelluloses and sloughed polymers from habituated cells were more homogeneously sized and had a lower weight-average relative molecular mass. In addition, polysaccharides underwent massive cross-linking after being secreted into the cell wall, but this cross-linking was less pronounced in habituated cells than in non-habituated ones. However, when relativized, ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid contents were higher in this habituated cell line. Feasibly, cells habituated to low levels of DcB synthesized molecules with a lower weight-average relative molecular mass, although cross-linked, as a part of their strategy to compensate for the lack of cellulose.

chronic model of tympanic perforation in rats with mitomycin c and dexamethasone

A rat model of chronic tympanic membrane perforation was developed to be used in the search of new materials for the sealing of these perforations. A longitudinal study was carried out in rats subjected to incisional myr-ingotomy followed by the application of mitomycin c alone or with dexamethasone. Rats were checked at days 3, 7,1 0,1 4 and weekly thereafter until perforation closure, for up to 6 months. The addition of dexamethasone is a key component in order to obtain a chronic opening. myringotomies treated w ith saline had a mean healing time of 8.5 days. At 8 weeks, between 62.5% and 77.7% of tympanic membranes treated w ith mitomycin c and dexamethasone remained perforated and at 6 months this number fell to 21.4%. This technique is able to maintain most tympanic membrane perforations patent for at least 8 weeks. This rat model is adequate for its use in preclinical or translational research.

Hepatoprotective effects of antioxidants in chronic hepatitis c

We have read with interest the paper published in issue 2, volume 16 of World Journal of Gastroenterology 2010 by Nakamura et al, demonstrating that the antioxidant resveratrol (RVT) enhances hepatitis c virus (HcV) replication, consequently, they conclude that RVT is not a suitable antioxidant therapy for HcV chronic infection. The data raise some concern regarding the use of complementary and alternative medicine since the most frequent supplements taken by these patients are antioxidants or agents that may be beneficial for different chronic liver diseases. A recent study by Vidali et al on oxidative stress and steatosis in the progression of chronic hepatitis c concludes that oxidative stress and insulin resistance contribute to steatosis, thus accelerating the progression of fibrosis. We are particularly interested in investigating how the oxidative and nitrosative stress mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of different chronic liver diseases.

Age structure of a lizard along an elevational gradient reveals nonlinear lifespan patterns with altitude

Lifespan is one of the main components of life *** lifespans can be expected in marginal ***,in the case of ectotherms,lifespan typically increases with altitude,even though temperature-one of the main factors to determine ectotherms'life history-declines with *** pattern can be explained by the fact that a shorter activity time favors *** this study,we analyzed how lifespan and other life-history traits of the lizard Psammodromus algirus vary along a 2,200 m elevational gradient in Sierra Nevada(SE Spain).Populations at inter-mediate altitudes(1,200-1,700 m),corresponding to the optimal habitat for this species,had the shortest lifespans,whereas populations inhabiting marginal habitats(at both low and at high altitudes)lived ***,this lizard did not follow the typical pattern of ectotherms,as it also lived longer at the lower limit of its distribution,nor did it show a longer lifespan in areas with optimal *** results might be explained by a complex combination of different gradients along the mountain,namely that activity time decreases with altitude whereas food availability *** could explain why lifespan was maximum at both high(limited activity time)and low(limited food availability)altitudes,resulting in similar lifespans in areas with contrasting environmental *** findings also indicated that reproductive investment and body condition increase with elevation,suggesting that alpine populations are locally adapted.

BAcKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)and endoscopic ultrasound elastography(EUS-E)simulation lessens the learning curve;however,models lack realism,diminishing *** To standardize the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)hydrogel for simulating organs and digestive *** PVA hydrogel(Sigma Aldrich,degree of hydrolysis 99%)for simulating EUS/EUS-E lesions was investigated in Unidad de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico at Hospital General de méxico“*** Liceaga”,mexico *** evaluated physical,contrast,elasticity and deformation coefficient characteristics in lesions,applying Kappa’s concordance and satisfaction questionnaire(Likert 4-points).RESULTS PVA hydrogel showed stable mechanical *** depended on molecular weight(mW)and concentration(c).PVA bblocks with the greatest density showed lowest tensile strength(r=-0.8,P=0.01).Lesions were EUSgraphically *** and heterogeneous examples were created from PVA blocks or PVA phantoms,exceeding(mW2=146000-186000,c9=15%and c10=20%)with a density under(mW1=85000-124000,c1=7%and c2=9%).We calculated elasticity and deformation parameters of solid(blue)areas,contrasting with the norm(Kappa=0.8;high degree of satisfaction).cONcLUSION PVA hydrogels were appropriate for simulating organs and digestive lesions using EUS/EUS-E,facilitating practice and reducing *** amplified skills,while reducing the learning curve.

Background It is necessary to determine the implications for managing forest stands using variable retention harvesting for maintaining carbon and for calculating the effects of different harvesting practices on above-and below-ground carbon balance in forest *** this context,forest carbon management has gained more attention among managers and policy-makers during recent *** aim of this study was to determine carbon pool dynamics in different forest ecosystem components after variable retention harvesting(VRH)to characterize the ecological stability and quantify the recovery rate through the years-after-harvesting(YAH).methods carbon pool compartmentalization of 14 different components was determined in 60 harvested and primary unmanaged forests during the first 18 YAH in Tierra del Fuego(Argentina).We compared them using uni-and multi-variate methods,relativizing the outputs with primary unmanaged *** We determined the effectiveness to retain carbon components in post-harvested stands under different retention strategies(aggregated ***).The balance among carbon pool components changed between managed and unmanaged stands across the YAH,and was directly related to the impact *** retention improved the ecological stability of the harvested areas,where the below-ground components were more stable than the above-ground *** recovery rate was directly related to the post-harvesting natural dynamics of the *** studied period was not enough to fully recover the c levels of primary unmanaged for-ests,but VRH showed advantages to increase the c pools in the managed *** Promoting VRH can improve sustainable forestry at the landscape level and in the long term,generating positive synergies with biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem *** study provides important new insights into forest carbon management,in particular to setting standards in carbon projects and sets the ground

Optimized combinations of statins and azoles against Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts in vitro

Objective: To evaluate the combination of several statins(atorvastatin, fluvastatin and simvastatin) and azoles(voriconazole, posaconazole and itraconazole) against Acanthamoeba spp. methods: The efficiency of the different drug combinations against the trophozoite stage of different Acanthamoeba strains were evaluated by Alamar Blue assay. Effect on the cyst stage was observed by inverted microscope. cytotoxicity of combinations of azoles and statins was evaluated by measuring the release of lactate dehydrogenase from a murine macrophage cell line. Results: combinations of any of the tested statins and voriconazole or posaconazole were more efficient in inhibiting Acanthamoeba compared to statins or azoles individually. The drug combinations at the combined inhibitory concentrations 50% showed lower toxicity compared to that of the compounds ***: The combinations of statins together with voriconazole and posaconazole are more efficient than these drugs alone, and these combinations have lower cytotoxicity in mammalian cell lines.

Preparation of a Slow Release Biofertilizer From a Polymeric Urea-Formaldehyde matrix (PUFm)

Fertilizers industry faces the challenge of improving the efficiency of its products either by optimizing the fertilizers in use or by developing new types of *** the last decade,controlled and slow release technologies have become more *** technologies aim to increase the efficiency of the applied substance by increasing its action over time and avoiding losses of all kinds(leaching,volatilization).The main purpose of the current study was to obtain a slow release biofertilizer by incorporating microalgae into a polymeric urea-formaldehyde matrix(PUFm).The quantitative analysis of macronutrients and micronutrients in the microalgae was determined using different techniques including titration,UV and Atomic Adsorption *** matrix and the formulation obtained(PUFm+cHLO)were also characterized by Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)and Scanning Electron microscopy(SEm).The“in vitro”study showed a typical slow release behavior of nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P)and potassium(K)*** was also shown that(PUFm+cHLO)formulation has the slowest macronutrients release time with a maximum release of 28%,26%y 46%for(N-P-K)macronutrients respectively during a period of 30 ***"in vivo"study exposed the benefits of the biofertilizer formulation(PUFm+cHLO)from conventional commercial fertilizer(cF)(NPK-14-5-12).Due to the presence of nutrients of natural origin in microalgae,(PUFm+cHLO)shows ecological effects which could also developing sustainable agriculture systems.
